Completing zones before moving on was my way of playing as well. I am somewhat of a completionist, so I couldn't really imagine playing any other way... on the other hand, playing alts is very frustrating this way (since you're effectively repeating a LOT of stuff) - ultimately it's a matter of taste and not particularly important in terms of character development.
I didn't play a lot of ranger, but here's the thing about weapon sets... in general they're all useful and viable, so choosing a setup comes down to your taste in a lot of ways. On the other hand, some sets feel more optimized than others (playing an elementalist the most myself, I could not imagine playing with anything but a staff, the other sets just felt inferior in every way) so if you're someone that's big on playing "the best way" you may feel pigeon-holed into certain sets.
I would advise against using the MH sword and to a lesser extent OH dagger - the ranger sword has a very cumbersome 1-chain (I recommend you try it just to see what I mean) and the viper's sting or whatever the dodge strike is just doesn't feel very effective. I'd recommend having 1 melee and 1 ranged weapon set in your setup, simply because a lot of events are a lot less punishing with a ranged weapon and this way you can switch out of melee to recover if you take too much damage close to the boss. Naturally, ranged is also extremely conducive to kiting (which is very, very powerful in GW2).
So to keep it simple, I'd say go for greatsword as the melee option, axe/axe or axe/torch or axe/warhorn for short-medium range and shortbow for medium-long range. Again, didn't play ranger a lot, but I got the distinct impression that the shortbow is preferable to the longbow most of the time because it allows for a lot more mobility (again, a big deal in GW2) and the skills seem to work together better. The shortbow is all about inventive kiting and damage over time (bleeds), while the longbow is about staying as far away from your target as possible while shooting them... personally I think it makes for a lot less interesting (and effective) play style.

Also, what do you suggest should be my two weapon sets? Yeah, map completion gives a nice boost in money and crafting materials. On my ranger, I pretty much wore whatever I found that was strongest. But 2hsword or sword/torch on one weapon set was pretty satisfying. And I feel shortbow beats longbow on dps especially when you get the piercing arrows trait.
The problem I'm facing is that I pick up a lot of stuff but I cant tell whats to keep and what to just get rid of ):.
I haven't tried the 2hsword at all yet, but I really enjoy longbow over shortbow due to its more sychronous cc abilities (push back + traps, etc.)
Are we talking PVE or PVP or does that not matter?

Shortbow is two-handed, how can I have a torch as well?

Shortbow 1st weapon set. Torch Warhorn 2nd weapon set.
And Shortbow does more dmg than longbow in the sense that you can AoE mobs super easily I assume, at least that was the case on my thief.
Use what gear you can thats an upgrade. Keep crafting materials, salvage whites if you need materials for professions, otherwise vendor. See if you can sell blues/greens over vendor price on AH otherwise salvage/vendor depending on what you need. Same goes even better equipment.

torch for dps, warhorn is for mobility
it'd be shortbow + axe/warhorn or axe/torch
And since you're a ranger you'd probably want a condi damage build.

I ask the reddit what were the downsides to the game and they weren't really able to name any. All World populations are high, but that doesn't really say much It's not that it feels dead (that wasn't my problem anyway, since I stopped playing around the end of september). For me it boiled down to the fact that you can't really play the game for the rewards (legendaries, cultural armor, etc.) because the grind is immense. So basically the only motivator is the gameplay itself. And yes, I do agree that a game that keeps you playing because you love to play it instead of because CARROTS is an amazing game and if GW2 were that game I'd be playing the shit out of it. Unfortunately the gameplay itself gets boring pretty quickly and the story is just a complete failure (whereas in TOR, for example, the story kept me playing regardless of the games other shortcomings.) Completely agreed. The fractals were fun for a little while, but anything you run 20+ times is going to get boring, and the rewards are so randomly distributed I still never got a ring drop or even a vial drop to make a backpiece (and I've been running level 10-14 exclusively the past week). It's gotten to the point that I'm only farming for the carrot, and I've already done that before in other MMOs and swore I'd never do it again. The gameplay was fun while it lasted, but for me I feel like it's time to move on to other hobbies and games. Ah well. Maybe I'll play it once in a while again. Also sucks my guild pretty much died. Really? This is what WoW is built on. Doing the same thing. Everyday. For years. And it's worked. Running something a thousand times and still not getting an item. But people still play. I'm not a fan of it, and that's why I like this game. You're not forced to do that. But to each his own I suppose.
Right.. and as I said, I'm not a fan of running the same content over and over for the chance of barely improved loot.
With Guild Wars 2, as I've mentioned in previous posts, I got bored of the WvW and sPvP. And now I've also gotten bored of the dungeons. I had 4 80s and a level 50, so I've also tried many classes. I also maxed all the crafting professions (and did nothing with them after lol ). The story was uninteresting to me and the voice acting was awful. I just don't see me coming back to play this game much if at all.
With all that said, I'm still happy I spent my $60 on the game and I enjoyed the many hours of fun I had with the game throughout the months. I'm not saying it's a bad game. It's actually the best MMO I ever played so far overall, in fact. I would recommend this game to almost anyone whether they've liked previous MMOs or not.
So my post was echoing a previous poster saying that I would continue to play the game if the gameplay was amazing. But it got stale for me and many others. The only reason for me to stay would be to farm content for carrots, and I'm staying away from that now.

Why do you guys prefer Shortbow over Longbow? The longbow's AOE, precision shot and pushback are all very good. Rapid fire is of course good for DPS too.

shortbow puts out more damage is the short answer

if anyone on SBI wants to game, send me a pm, anything from PvP to PvE

Anyone know the state of the Engineer? Im quite new at the game, so I have not seen them end game or anything. I heard some rumour that they can be anything, but that the role they want to fulfill, can always be filled by someone else, better. Maybe more like a hybrid of all roles, only the tax is they cant fulfill it quite as good.
How is their playstyle? Do you easily get bored of them?
Im asking here cause asking at some GW2 forum is not very wise, everyone wants to whine these days.

Man I haven't played in a while but I'll be sure to stop in for the Wintersday events, looks nice!
@crappen: My main is engineer. I feel that they are quite versatile from the PvE standpoint, but your thing about being 'jack of all trades and master of none' may be valid to some degree. I think they are pretty fun to play overall, but I was a little tired from GW2 altogether the last few weeks.
Both weapons will work in end game, although for most people who do endgame farming you will be using bomb/grenade kits most of the time so your main weapon's not going to matter as much (which is why quite a few people also do pistol/shield), loads of AoE damage and great for event tagging. I feel like turrets are underwhelming in general; it doesn't help that there aren't really many good traits for them either. Most of your gadgets are pretty nice, but a tool kit usually is better in those very limited slots. But just switching between tool kits is quite fun imo. I think a lot of engineers like putting 10 points into tools to get the perma-swiftness when you're running around; if you can't afford putting 10 there the med kit swiftness and elixir B are other decent swiftness options.
I think engineers are quite good in dungeons. You can put out so much all-around utility, including a pretty ludicrous amount of fields if you want to spec for it (you can have something like up to 6 different fields I think). Your elixirs are quite useful in dungeons as well. Having a lot of fields is also very beneficial to WvWvW, but I don't play much of that.
PvP is more about your skill. From the few games I've played (~30), I have done reasonably well. However, they aren't a particularly good duelist class imo, nor can they do effective bunker builds like guardians. But unless you're playing really competitively most of that isn't going to matter much in casual PvP. Unless you are a grenade god I'd avoid taking them in PvP; bombs work really well against melee though. You will probably actually use your main weapon; I tend to prefer rifle but ymmv.
tl;dr don't be discouraged from playing engineers if you are worried about end game or balance woes.

The extremely short TL:DR version, assuming optimal range for the longbow, and using all of its damage increasing abilities without clipping the auto-attack, it is worse than the shortbow in damage assuming the shortbow is getting the bleeds.
This is true for EVERY possible talent, trait, and gear combination you can currently make.
The longbow only edge's out the shortbow when the shortbow is not getting its bleed stacks (attacking from the front), and they are both using the berserker's items.
The longbow has two decent utility skills, and does burst harder than the shortbow (only if you use QZ+RF).
Basically the longbow is piece of shit that needs a major overhaul, but then again, so are the ranger talent/trait trees.

It all depends on what build you're using. I'm going for the bleed build with a bear tank. Bear makes the enemy turn his back on me, i get 1 stack bleed per hit in the back of enemy and the shortbow shoots so damn fast. Also I got a few skills adding bleed from pet hit and the trap and stuff. So they got down super fast!

@Whineandbread Thanks. I have given up the act of wanting to be best and having the best potential profession(class). So yes, Im gonna give engineers a shot. I had a real surprise when I started one, that they could not switch weapons. I had no idea about the kits and tools, so I thougth they where gonna be real boring with only a few skills at hand. I was in for a surprise when I took the grenade kit and figured 5 new skills! So fun. Part of the reason I like elementalist so much as well, doing dual dagger as leveling build hehe.
Really really long time since I truly enjoyed an MMO, last time was vanilla and Burning crusade in wow.
PS: What would be a nice partner for an engineer? Does it not really matter since they can fulfill so many cool roles?

IMO warrior/guardian are ideal for almost every char, ofcourse anyone can play with anything but just having that heavy armor tank upfront while you do your own thing from the back just makes it so much easier, main is a warrior and my alt is an ele, so i know lol

I had a Guardian till about level 14 or something, and when I met an event, this big bad mob was just smashing me down like I was cloth. I had shield and mace. How does the tank role function ? Guess Im pretty stuck in old school wow attitude, tank and spank. Actually I probably should learn to avoid shit better, he probably did an animation I was not reading.
Cant two cloths just kite? If one get aggro, the other turns and does his thing, and vice versa?
|
You don't tank like WoW, that's fast way to being a ghost. You dodge, you evade, you use block abilities, blind/stun/daze the enemy, you kite. You don't stand there hoping your parry+dodge chance is high enough that healers afk spam you to full before next big hit connects.
Bigger enemy attacks have animations, most of them really obvious. Also, things can't hit their back and again, this isn't WoW, you can actually run behind, around, aside and away from mobs. See a troll charge up a huge uppercut? Dodge away or move out the cone (behind him) and he hits thin air.
The shield for the guardian doesn't grant him much tanklike survivability on its own. It has a cone attack that grants protection which is always nice and a bubble that knocks back foes when cast and absorbs projectile attacks. The mace has a block move, but that's only for one attack.

man I haven't played GW2 for over a month. I really want to pick it up again but my graphics card has mad overheating issues with GW2 and crashing every ~5 minutes really kills the game for me :[
