100m ? really ?
+ Good looking MMO + Lore / Story + Big open world that you can explore with your friends (Adventure waiting for you) + I heard it got good sPvP (U dont need to play 8h a day to get gear. U get instant lvl80 and same gear in PvP)
MMOs are all about community. Think about it as a game where you meet and work with new ppl so you can safe the world from big ass dragons.
I'm starting to get pissed off as well. 2h30 of the game not letting me log on approx now.
And this IS launch. It's a 3 day headstart because of pre-purchase, but it's still a launch. We are pretty much their guinea pigs for their servers it seems, which I don't consider a nice reward for pre-purchasing.
i assume this is your first launch of an mmo.
Arguments like this always hurt my head, just because other companies fuck up doesn't mean it's okay or right. I'm not bashing ArenaNet, but compensation would be nice and I don't see any reason NOT to do it from a business standpoint, and it just seems like the right thing to do.
The point is that the headstart wasn't something you paid extra for. The other point is no matter how well prepared you are to release your game that has a major amount of popularity, it will find a way to screw your plans over. Maybe they will, maybe they won't but the other thing is that they have these people working around the clock so people like you can play the game in the first place. Just consider what these people are doing in their own time dealing with a bunch of comments like this as they try to bring up something they've worked on for years to the same people who are giving them crap for it.
Welcome to sales of any product ever in the history of man? Salesman gets shit if the product don't work. Lol, surprising isn't it?
Exactly. Not asking anything special at all; just the servers working.
you dont understand. nobody in the year of 2012 possesses the technology to make this work.
If that was the case, they could never fix the issue and the servers would never work. Your statement makes no sense. They misjudged how many people would be trying to enter the servers at once and the activity it would cause, which is why it's not working. Not because of a lack of technology.
As with every games, they also know that the first week will have a huge wave of people and that the number of users will decrease afterwards so it's probably a bad investment for them to acquire too many servers as well, which is probably the issue here as they tried to cut it too close.
with all due respect, do a bit of research on google the next 30 minutes, it'll spare us a long and boring discussion that ultimately will prove that you are wrong, because this really isnt as easy as you want to think it is. we're talking about a highly professional company experienced in this shit, if they knew exactly what to do they would've made precise preparations and thus prevent the issue from occuring. furthermore, this happens for every launch of an mmo, you'd think SOMEONE by now would think of doing a bit of extra preparation, no? well guess what, as i said before, it's impossible.
Your argument consists solely of : "You are wrong, I am right. I know so because other companies have had issues in the past as well."
To be honest I'm done discussing this with you, as it's going in a circle. Fact of the matter is that they fucked up, plain and simple.
are you excluding my arguments on purpose? i dont care if you're "done discussing" with me, i'm only telling you what anyone has been trying to tell you. fact of the matter is that you're just another ignorant customer who thinks he knows it all. i'm sorry.
Tom, you're a funny white knight, but do show me the bit where anet tells me I can't expect service today.
And yea, even if I've been to several mmo launches and they all fucked up and now anet repeats it, doesn't mean I can't be disppointed each time. This isn't a tech issue, it's purely a money issue, google up a bit and save us crusade for anet a bit ^_^
oh well, MLG is on, time to check some matches and leave Tom to his crusade here.
Yeah, big let-down that even the most reliable companies fail about such matters these days.

Its predecessor was a leading PvP MMORPG. Far less rage experienced than in SC2/D3/Aion etc. GW2 supports dynamic events. No subscription, no free to play / pay to win (not yet at least). Diverse classes. Relatively much freedom in the world. It's even possible to dodge projectiles. Lots of cooperative and competitive tasks. Runs fast, looks decent. Arenat.net is renown for not treating their customers like crap, usually.

i guess explaining how things work around here makes me a white knight. in that case, i'm honored. but with all due respect, look it up yourself, i couldnt care less what you choose to believe despite what i'm telling you, although you can confirm it in a matter of minutes by simply google what i tell you rather than sitting on your ass saying "no, no, that's not true, herp derp" oh, and, crusade, really? did i piss you off or do you just spontaneously feel stepped on, on the internet?

You're right I'm done. I added him to my ignore list and it's over.
Now then, I assume another 3-4 hours before we can play so I guess I'll go watch something else. I've been trying to get into soccer recently and I have a Barcelona vs Real Madrid match from a few days ago so I guess I'll watch that while waiting for MLG.
I don't think there has been any highly anticipated launch that didn't cause me to wait several hours at login screens. Though now, even getting to the login screen isn't possible (connection error).
I don't blame them, even if they did 10 stress tests - no affordable technology in the world can support this many logins without crashing. They could have bought 10x more login servers, but those would be worthless after the first week, because logins normalize after that because the hype is over.

Thanks for the replies, and I watched that video. It sounds to me that what makes GW2 so great is (1) immersiveness; (2) balanced pve and pvp that requires skill; and (3) easy and fun co-operative experience.
Unfortunately I'm not the type that enjoys MMOs or RPGs in general, so I think I'll have to pass. The only RPG that I truly loved was Skyrim -- everything else, not so much (including Chrono Trigger, Star Ocean, FF7, Fallout 1/2, Mass Effects, SWKOTORs). But GL HF to ya'll!

Yeah they are a pretty big time investment and you really need to immerse yourself in these games to enjoy them (beyond community aspect).
