I'm starting to get pissed off as well. 2h30 of the game not letting me log on approx now.
And this IS launch. It's a 3 day headstart because of pre-purchase, but it's still a launch. We are pretty much their guinea pigs for their servers it seems, which I don't consider a nice reward for pre-purchasing.
i assume this is your first launch of an mmo.
Arguments like this always hurt my head, just because other companies fuck up doesn't mean it's okay or right. I'm not bashing ArenaNet, but compensation would be nice and I don't see any reason NOT to do it from a business standpoint, and it just seems like the right thing to do.
The point is that the headstart wasn't something you paid extra for. The other point is no matter how well prepared you are to release your game that has a major amount of popularity, it will find a way to screw your plans over. Maybe they will, maybe they won't but the other thing is that they have these people working around the clock so people like you can play the game in the first place. Just consider what these people are doing in their own time dealing with a bunch of comments like this as they try to bring up something they've worked on for years to the same people who are giving them crap for it.
Welcome to sales of any product ever in the history of man? Salesman gets shit if the product don't work. Lol, surprising isn't it?

That wouldnt be surprising at all, considering MoP is next month, even if its f2p game. Blizzard did a lot of work in both diablo and Wow and released content near GW2 launch. I really liked that "75% OFF World of Warcraft – This Week Only" they did
Last month it was -50% This Week Only. I think next time it will be pay as much as you want to. But ye Blizz is working on WoW 7 years now ? they dont want to let their baby die.
Im surprised about error 37 too. There were so many stress tests and now its down ? wierd.

I'm only pointing this out to people who think they deserve more. While I know most people think they deserved this headstart, I'm pretty sure its just them covering up these 3 days as a way to observe the servers at a near full capacity for when they release it on the 28th to everyone else. Something to keep in mind.
So one of my friends is going absolutely ballistic over this game, and he also told me over 100 million ppl are playing the pre-launch. I hate MMO's but I'm really curious as to what all the fuss and hype over this game is about.
Could anyone tell me in a few concise bullet points what makes this game so great?

If that was the case, they could never fix the issue and the servers would never work. Your statement makes no sense. They misjudged how many people would be trying to enter the servers at once and the activity it would cause, which is why it's not working. Not because of a lack of technology.
As with every games, they also know that the first week will have a huge wave of people and that the number of users will decrease afterwards so it's probably a bad investment for them to acquire too many servers as well, which is probably the issue here as they tried to cut it too close.

Son, I wasn't born in the 21st century, I know how these things go, but to claim that one can't be disappointed that a service they paid for isn't working is silly, is simply retarded. And all of us at the headstart trusted the company enough to pay full price for a product they hadn't seen/tried before dishing out the cash, for a product that wasn't even ready yet.
I've been through several launches and I still remain disappointed every time they goof it up. Anet did many a stresstest and even divided the launch to 3 different dates and STILL fail at the first checkpoint. I reserve the right to be disappointed at that service, with all due respect...
It's funny, you never see honest, transparent error messages in these things. It's always "connectivity issue", cryptic numbered errors, or random things like this patch that won't download, rather than "Server that does XYZ overloaded/down".
I'd be interested to see a company just dump the output of top (as in the unix command) on one of their servers to a webpage, just to show people that it really is an overload issue. I know EVE has shown some interesting plots of server CPU load vs. time in big clusterfuck battles...

Dot point wise...there are a lot of good videos which cover them. This was the one that got me originally interested:
