Disappointing. So I guess my next question is... what server has the best ratio of girls to doing decent in WvW ratio?
I know Tarnished Coast is the "unofficial RP" server and I know RPing is more of a girl / gay guy thing. But it seems like almost the majority of guilds on that server want to focus on RPing and not actually participating in PvP/WvW which is an issue for me. Like, between flirting with girls, I would like to be competitive. Anyone know what server that would be?

I feel sad that I'm one of the 6 nerds going for elementalist. It's almost guaranteed to be the most common class, because people want to throw fireballs around for some reason. >.<

FOR ANYONE NOT AWARE :
ANet tends to give birthday presents, so it's a good idea to make 5 characters on launch even if you only play 1. Make what you plan on playing ahead, so you can benefit from gifts as early as possible. In Guild Wars 1, there was a gift each year containing items you can't get elsewhere (miniatures usually, but who knows what they will do in Guild Wars 2 and that is assuming they keep up the presents in this game as well) and the prices in the first few days of them being available are easily 3 to 5 times as much as a week later.
So if you're in this for the long haul, remember to make all your characters as soon as possible and then don't delete them!

I want to play elementalist eventually but mostly to throw lightning around instead :D
I'm going Thief. I was going to be Ranger but I already got one pretty far in BWE3 and just want to explore a different class I guess.

Yeah I want a class with the highest skill cap... MMOs tend to be too slow for a SC2/Dota player =/

Thief is up there because of the mobile play-style and the unique initiative system requires really conservative use of abilities. It plays different from the other classes in this regard which just have cool-down based abilities.
Eng/Ele are up there too simply because of the fact that they can have 50% more unique abilities than every other class so knowing when to use what in your large pool of unique abilities will have it's own difficulties.
Not sure how difficult the other classes are compared to these three but at first glance it seems like these will be considered the most difficult to play well.

Rangers have several pets they can use, and can switch between 2 pets as well during combat. They seem to be pretty demanding to play correctly, harder than anything else I think because making good use of your pets requires you to control 2 characters at once.

Can't speak to the people that plan on rolling that server in GW2, but from my experience in MMOs in general RP servers tend to be some of the best servers the game has to offer. In most cases, people don't full RP. You may see a lot of formal speech, but from my experience you can talk normally and not get flamed too hard, especially if its outside of a global chat.
As far as the people, kids tend to not roll RP servers because they think it's weird, and the people that roll RP are genuinely interested in the game and having a nice experience while playing, so you'll see a lot less douchebags and morons (if the 2 can be mutually exclusive for you ) running around. Of course there will be some, but again, speaking from my experience have been few and far between.
If I wasn't rolling a specific server with a friend, or rolling on Ehmry with TL, I would roll on the RP server 100%

Why dont you bring yer friend along!?
Question: What makes a PvP server a PvP Server ??? is friendly fire on or something ??
|
It's all down to unofficial community choice for guilds and alliances.
Mostly a lot of pvp guilds will be joining up on the same servers because it just makes sense logistically, and because a ton of people from the community know each other already. Then there's a lot of casual people who want to avoid potentially being matched up against these players constantly in potential wvw fights etc. and just would like to have more equal minded casuals in around.
Then there's segregation based on TZ's and the like.
There's not any mechanic made to differentiate the servers. It's just what the community chooses.

Actually that was our original intention, however we're both old DAoC vets (my friend being much more attached the game then I ever was) and it seems a lot of DAoC players will be rolling on Jade Quarry, so that's where we're heading. With that said, if I get stuck in the overflow all the time cause the server looks to be pretty heavily popped, I'll xfer over to Ehmry.
As far as PvP I don't think there are any PvP servers in the sense of WoW, TERA, etc, where on a pvp server you can attack any other player on that server at any time. The pvp in this game appears to be restricted to the competitive pvp which ranges from 1v1 to 5v5 (i think), and then the WvWvW which are the large scale based pvp with servers battling it out.

Ehh...I suppose you do "control" your pet, but that control pretty much just amounts to setting it to passive and every once in a while pressing F2 to use the pet's racial skill (the only pet skill you have control over).

Ah I thought you had control over all of their skills. I guess it makes sense since I remember now that I was only using 1 pet skill at a time when I was playing Ranger. I just assumed that the starting pets were awful on purpose but oh well.
Nevermind then, Ranger is pretty basic in that case.

When people talk about gw2 servers being PvP oriented they are only referring to the ambiguous focus of the general population of that server. If a lot more people (relative to other servers) want to play WvW and win WvW on server X, server X is simply labeled as a PvP server. These servers are identified by specified WvW alliances / guilds, community groups, and websites who are gathering on those servers.

Just thought I'd point out that your friend's claim is random and has no grounding whatsoever. Nothing about the thief means it requires more actions than any other class and definitely wouldn't be the most actions required of the bunch unless there's some insane build I don't know about.

Also, keep in mind that the large large majority of players will pick a server at random because they aren't obsessed like we are and even with a community "focus" on servers, they will be diluted in the mass of normal players.
I pity all of those that will end up unknowingly choosing the RP server and overall have a terrible experience being flamed by people because they aren't RPing or just wondering why every other player is mildly insane when they just want to play the game normally (unlike the other guy earlier, I avoid RP servers like the plague as that's my experience with them).
