I have a dedicated dodge skill. I can circle strafe. I can sort of kite. Will there be any other dodge skills? Because some creeps have such quick attacks that I can use one hit of a basic attack and not have time to back out of the way.

Pros - The graphics and artstyle are good. There are some major issues but I think these are due to the graphic settings not being ingame yet. Combat requires more skill than most MMOs Elin are hot Cons - Storyline is bad Voice acting is horrible and was a complete waste of budget PvP is, thus far, pretty awful. It consists mostly of 1v10s and there are no guards so groups of players basically just sit in town next to you and the second you try to walk out they gank you. This should happen less at retail but right now it's pretty much impossible to play on a PvP server unless you're in a small group unless you like dying every 2-3 minutes and taking hours to level. The few times I've managed to be the initiator I will find someone alone, attack them, and before killing them 4-5 more people always show up and kill me. I had a theory about this so I initiated an attack and let the other guy get me to low health. Sure enough a group of people passed by and killed my opponent, leaving me alive. It seems everyone is a white knight and will attack the player with the most health, assuming said player is the ganker. So, for now, when I want to gank someone I simply make sure my health stays higher than theirs until the last second so anyone passing by will take my side. Unfortunately the PvP system itself is really god awful at the moment and needs some major changes. The combat. Yes, I said it was a pro... but it's also a con. The entire combat system is a gimmick and it gets old very quickly. I'm level 12 and I'm already bored of it. There's also an issue with responsiveness in the combat, at least for melee classes (or a Lancer, specifically). The attacks are extremely clunky and non-fluid and the control scheme only makes things worse. You have to aim at a target to use your abilities, but ultimately you attack where you character is facing. For example, I'll start doing a combo attack - three hits. The combo attack will end with me behind my opponent due to what I assume is bad netcode/hitbox registration. Now, in a traditional MMO this is no problem because it takes a fraction of a second to spin your character around. However, in TERA it feels like keyboard turning and I'm not really sure how else to explain it other than by saying it's very unresponsive. Other people seem to have this issue as well because I've yet to see another melee player control their character well. An overwhelming amount of skills seem to leave you out of position after use, even against a stationary target, and so half of every fight is basically just readjusting your character. I also don't know if it's the fact I use a giant jousting pole or what but even standing point blank against a target in my crosshair my attacks will often miss and simply shove me around their colision box instead. Basically I don't see this game lasting too long. I would guess it will go F2P within six months of release. There's really nothing unique about it other than the combat system which, as mentioned above, isn't very fluid and loses the "wow!" factor really quickly. Even the wings gimmick in Aion kept me interested longer because at least it wasn't forced on you.

You play on a PvP server because you can party with friends, you're in a guild, or you're a maschist. I think playing on a PvP server just so you can occasionally 1v1 gank someone outside is probably a bit too optimistic.

From what I've seen in the beta so far the game is solid. But the level cap's just 22, and the factors that will really define the game's success will not become apparent in a beta: 1. Lasting and meaningful challenges in both PvP and PvE. In a good MMO, you can never run out of goals. This depends mostly on design and philosophy, but also the developer's diligence in injecting new content into the game. 2. Balance. As many different classes and playstyles as possible should be viable to keep things interesting. High achieving players should be rewarded well, but there must also be a way for newbies to progress even after they are left behind by others. The economy should be monitored and regulated if need be, and botters&chinese farmers hampered as much as possible. 3. Community. Obviously there's going to be lots of troll kids, that can't be helped. What's needed is the emergence of a variety of good guilds, so that any kind of player, mature or leetkid, hardcore or casual, jerk ganker or a white knight, can find a place to belong. If Tera can nail these things, it could go on for 5 years and become a real classic. Most likely it'll join the WoW clones in obscurity though.

I'll say this much--if you've played mmos as much as I have, this 'combat gimmick' is about ten times more fun than doing shitty quests that are rehashed in a different game for the 100th time.

Before the servers went down I took out the boss dragon things that roams west of poopori(sp) town, near the other, similar dragon/bird elites. It took nearly 20 minutes because I still had the blue 22 sword on my slayer, but it felt slightly gratifying. What does combat have to do with quests? TERA has the exact same "shitty quests that are rehashed in a different game for the 100th time" that every other MMO does. In fact, I would say TERA is more generic than most MMOs in terms of quests because after doing a few hundred quests they have pretty much all been "kill x creatures" quests. I think I've had one escort quest, three or four delivery quests, and maybe two harvesting quests. I'm just trying to figure out your statement because it doesn't make any sense at all. You're saying that even though TERA has the same rehashed quests as every other MMO out there it somehow doesn't count because the combat system is different?
