I've never heard a single person ever call him the best ever

Anyway, the league said they are going to suspend players who do helmet to helmet hits or what they deem as "devastating" hits.

Ray Lewis is going to have a stroke when he hears that.

No one has to my knowledge, but Barry is my second favorite player ever and CJ almost broke his record of 14 straight 100yard rushing games and is close to breaking his record of 10 straight 100yard away games. Everything about CJ irks me off so I really don't want him to be ever be compared to Barry.

Yeah pretty much. I needed a lot of points from MJD, and I was really surprised when he started getting a lot of rushing yards in the 4th. Then when they're 4th and 1 I go "You know, I bet Trent Edwards muffs this and they don't give to MJD to try to go up the middle"

Sure enough...

If you're going to run the ball so much, why not just do it when you get close? You've already thrown away your chance to win? Sigh.

someone accurately stated it a few pages back, but the dude looks like a crackhead and has some kinda weird twitch...barry's class broski.

And I too think AP is the best in the league...

also: This new devastating hit rule. Watch how poorly it gets enforced on gamedays. It's going to be terrible. It's the exact stupid bullshit that they're doing in hockey now that's ruining the game. Football is a violent game. Shit happens.

ENFORCE THE EXISTING FUCKING HEADSHOT RULE AND YOU'RE FINE!!! The hit that nearly murdered Jackson was totally legal, but that will be flagged every fucking time now.

In Jacksonville's defense, Trent Edwards is terrible.

Not in Jacksonville's defense, I have no idea why they don't have a better backup QB. When the Detroit Lions' 3rd QB (Stanton) is better than your backup, you have issues you should have addressed a while ago. (Not that Stanton's particularly brilliant, but he at least looked competent and I'm making a point.)

No. Defenders would constantly trip up the opponent on long routes. Doing it the way the guy below your post suggested it leaves things far too ambiguous. It's really the only way to have the rule. What I think they should do is make PI calls challengeable, given the incredible impact a PI call can have.

I just saw on SportsCenter that James Harrison might retire because he got fined 75k for that helmet-to-helmet hit. Wtf

According to ESPN.com Carolina is fifth best against the pass.

A sixth round draft pick that sucks is a sixth round draft pick. A first round draft pick that sucks is a bust. There's a difference.

I don't really rely on that kinda stuff 'cause there's always a lot more to it. I haven't seen the Panthers play so I have no idea how their secondary really performs. x.x

Well, I don't even know what to think. Is Harrison going to far? Or is 75k too much of a fine? Should he have even been fined?

Edit: And the NFL tried to sell a picture of the hit? GJ

Judging by the way the Bears ran on them, they have much more to worry about in run defense, so their passing D likely will not be tested as often. I've only seen one game vs them, though, so I can't say this with any certainty.

I think he should have been fined, and I think $75k was more than enough. That's like a game and a half worth of pay for him. But I think that his fine should be that high because he is a repeat offender. I don't think Dunta Robinson should have been fined as heavily, because his was incidental, and he doesn't have a history of helmet-to-helmet hits like Harrison does. To me, when a guy is consistently hitting guys like that, it's no longer unintentional. Either he needs to examine the way he plays the game so that other players aren't constantly injured by his recklessness, or he needs to be fined and suspended until he does so. There are plenty of great players, and hard hitters that do not play like Harrison does, which is, imo, dirty-play for the most part (because I think he's actually trying to injure people... he seems like that type of person).

I think an incrementing scale would be good for these types of hits, starting with a fairly hefty fine of like 15-20k depending on how severe the hit was.

I think that this would discourage guys from being completely careless, but not take away too much from the integrity of the game. As much as I am for the safety of the players, especially given the more recent findings on the effects of head injuries, but I also recognize that this is a violent sport, and in a violent sport injuries are inevitable. These guys get paid well over ten times the normal salary to take part in what most consider a dream, and most of them seem to think similarly. So, imo, keep the players as safe as possible, but recognize that they know exactly what they're signing up for when they play at this level, and keep the spirit of the game alive.

The Dunta Robinson fine was completely unjustified; he didn't even make contact with Desean Jackson in the head, only the shoulder/chest area. I don't like the precedent being set that, as a defensive player, you can get fined by just doing your job and knocking the opposing player off the field.

Also remember that the Bears game padded Carolina's stats. It was just 1 game in 5, but 4 INTs and 51 passing yards didn't exactly hurt their numbers. And those numbers wouldn't have been anywhere near that bad if Chicago had been starting a legitimate quarterback instead of Collins.

I haven't seen the Robinson hit, but I saw the Harrison hits. He totally deserved a fine for that. Even if Massaquoi hadn't ducked his head a little bit at the end there, Harrison is still playing with fire by aiming his helmet at the collarbone of a defenseless receiver. I'm all for big hits, but using your helmet as a weapon to try to injure other players crosses the line.

you really think these veteran players give a shit about a 15 k fine? Rodney Harrison got asked this on Sunday night football, and he blatantly said that he didn't give a shit when he got fined, because what's 75k when you're making 5 million. It hurts for younger players a lot when they only make 500k, but for someone like harrison, 75k when he's made 20 million in his career is peanuts
