Wow, that's really nice. I see your using the minimap mod. I can't for the life of me get that to work. Anybody willing to help?
I can try. This is how I did it. Using Zan's minimap, from this thread: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=77497 . Download the link that says For Mac (yeah I know, trust me). Open the zip. Inside is a folder called raw087 (will be raw088 or something with later release). Extract the contents of that folder to some temporary dir. Open up your minecraft.jar (not the launcher, the one at %appdata%\.minecraft\bin ) with winrar or 7zip. Drag all the files you extracted earlier from the temporary directory into the minecraft.jar . Close winrar/7zip. run game.
The next epoch is upon us! The skies are trembling, pigs are growing wings, and the nether is turning awfully cold, as Minecraft slowly crawls out of Alpha..
Minecraft will reach Beta status on December 20th, 2010.
With Beta comes a larger focus on polish and content, and we’ll start early on with adding proper modding support with a stable API, and we’d love all input we can get on this from the modders out there. We’ll also add some kind of non-intrusive narrative to the game to help drive the game experience early on, and to provide some kind of late game goal. There will be a bigger focus on testing and stability as well, with more time between updates.
When the game enters beta, the price will rise to 14.95 Euro.
We will also change the license to remove the line that promises all future versions of the game for free. Please note that this change only affects people who buy the game after December 20, so if you got the game for during alpha, you will still get all future updates for free, despite this change. A promise is a promise. Buying the game during beta will include all updates up until release, of course, and bug patches will be free.
Soon, you will be able to buy gift codes for Minecraft, perfectly timed for the holidays! Even better, if you buy those before December 20, accounts created from these codes will count as alpha accounts, and will receive all future updates for free.
And the next game update (with server-side inventory) is coming next week, before Beta
Updated Client and Server to Beta 1.1 The server update isn’t mandatory, but it’s HIGHLY recommended
* Rewrote Leaf Decay for the seventeenth time, and as a result.. * .. fixed HUGE fps drops in single player * .. fixed players getting spammed with data and getting disconnected in SMP * .. felt like a sexy programming god * Fixed the item dupe bug in SMP
Notch is a humorous guy.
Also, can't believe this dropped to page 4. Guess everyone camps on Serejai's server (and thread) these days.
Can someone tell me if nether/portals are free of (major) bugs in singleplayer? I've read lots of stuff about portals not linking properly and so on, but I think most of it was about multiplayer.

ehm, the first one works, but you need to build the following ones in the nether I believe. If you want to use more than 1, I advise you to read the thread on the official minecraft forums.
Bought minecraft yesterday and this game is soooo much fun. I've ran into a little bit of trouble however, because one of my mining paths ran into a huge ass cave that I want to explore. However, I hear scary noises so I don't really dare explore it yet. I have pretty low hp as well so what I want to know is
1. how do I fend off mobs in this game other than hiding in my cave 2. how can I regain my hp
Regain you HP by eating. Easiest way is to kill some pigs and cook the meat in a furnace. Then place it on your bar and right click.
Make a sword. Sword is a vertical line, one stick, then two material above it. Stone, Steel, and Diamond are good materials for swords. Gold and wood do so little damage you are better off with just a stick.
Armor also helps. Make it from leather from cows. I'm not going to spoil the recipes for armor. If you do want to know, just google around.
Fighting enemies can be a pain. Hit creepers and back off so they stop hissing. Skeletons are very tough. The best bet is to either shoot back or just charge them and take the damage like a man. Zombies are easy unless they get the jump on you.

Thanks! I made a diamond sword. Now I'm gonna go out and slay some cattle for leather. :>

check a page or two back, someone else and i had a discussion about this and how it works. I dicked around in the nether the other day on a save and had no problem.
hifriend, check out the http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Minecraft_Wiki. It helps to keep the crafting page open for a while as you learn the game. I didn't know I could build buckets with iron for a whole fucking month because I am an idiot.
You should also look into installing some good mods once beta kinks get hammered out. Mo Creatures ads a whole ton of stuff—mountable horses that you can breed, ogres, lions, etc— that push it towards sandbox + adventure. Also check out biomemod (you can make INSANE worlds with Avatar floating islands and stuff with this). MCmapper will create large, dangerous dungeons with treasure. Battle Towers makes two large towers with several floors of enemies and treasure, protected at the top by a golem.

I fucking lol'd.
Also speaking of mods, check out Glimmar's steampunk texture mod found on the minecraft forums. It doesn't add much as far as actual content, but the texture work is incredible. In a game that ostensibly rewards macro-scale planning, this texture pack brings the whole game down to a smaller scale.
So this is a pretty cool and funny cast series about two dudes in some minecraft SMP server. Someone went through and created villages and stuff complete with NPCs (either human controlled for the script or it's a bot). Just a cool kind of series
