I was in the dark and a monster appeared at the top of a staircase, I was hiding and not looking at it but it killed me (although I was only against a wall). I guess it just makes it more scary not knowing how the monsters can see/react/sense.
Think of the childish immature days of 2 - 4 year olds covering their eyes with only hands and repeating "You can't see me." That's basically how the monsters work.
Also, if you're spotted, sprint to a load screen door if possible. If not just round a corner, break line of sight in the dark and just crouch and lift a box or barrel and hide behind it. It's been working for me so far.
Be really careful sprinting while one is near by he will sense you and start chasing the sound until he spots you.
I played Penumbra and had no problems with stealth, if you were in the dark they couldn't see you. I figured I could "de-load" the monsters but I think thats kind of cheating. I guess they can see you at first and you need to break LoS in this game, compared to it was obvious when an enemy could see you in Penumbra and when they lost track of you but were searching. At least in Penumbra you could outrun a monster (although they had flashlights...)

I really really really advise you to play it alone. You don't have to but the paranoia and fear of being truly alone make it more scary. Plus how you interact with the environment creates the fear, as you have to manually open doors and do other tasks.
Then maybe play it with a girl/girlfriend :D , I have some calls to make...

Playing the game right now, and the sounds play a huge role in how creepy the game can get.
Has anyone noticed when you leave a room with a piano, it starts playing? All the random footsteps from the floor above you, creaks, etc... Don't play this game unless you have your sound on.
and the guys thats walking on the floor above you stops slightly after if you stop to listen for his steps. can't play this game for very long without being freaked out by something and having to leave

Aliens vs Predator, playing as a Marine on Director's Cut difficulty. (the first AvP, oldie but goodie)
I have it but my computer couldn't run it when I got it and now my comp is too good so it isn't compatible, but yeh that game is pretty good from the few levels I played.
You can get a special edition on steam for ~3 euro, which should be compatible with newer computers.
"Alien Versus Predator Classic 2000 has been updated to run on modern PCs and laptops using DirectX 9.0c and includes support for Xbox 360 Controller for Windows."
this game is fckin amazing, nearly got multiple heart attacks because of it.
heard that frictional depends on this games sales to continue making good stuff as they do so if you want a definetely good game buy it , its only 15€ on steam right now and its a really new game , so no complaining about the price!!
I'm looking forward to playing this some time, but I haven't been scared by any form of "spooky" media in the last few years. The only thing that really scares me anymore tbh is stuff where after witnessing it I literally appreciate life 50x more..so usually non-fictional horror stories. If it feels "fake", it just doesn't scare me and I don't feel anything =(.
If you want to experience this in its purest form please read this. I really feel like I have to say this again due to people not understanding how this game should be played. This game is about the experience and interaction with the environment to break your will to play or be able to function. A normal task like opening a door becomes nerve wracking.
1) You need either a good pair of headphones or insane set of speakers. I recommend headphones as I have a home theater but I found headphones to be much more immersive due to the fact that they sound more accurate and cut out all outside noise.
2) No music/other noise. No music, no windowed mode. It is not acceptable to listen to Miley Cyrus in windowed mode while playing this game. This goes for anything else that brings you comfort including Manfred.
3) You need to be alone. This may be fun to play with friends but it is better to play alone the first time. This means closing skype, IM, and turning your phone off or keeping it so you can see when a call comes but not have sound/vibration. No pets, no friends, no GF, no siblings. Having other people around gives a feeling of safety and comfort.
4) Make sure you take care of all biological needs before you start. That means make sure you have ate, have water, bio, etc.
5) Darkness. Your room needs to be absolutely dark either through shades or playing at night. Playing at night makes it extra creepy. No lights except for the monitor/projector/TV that you are playing on.
6) No breaks. Don't pause the game, turn off the sound, monitor, look away, etc to escape the game. I realize that this is hard but if you are abusing Pause or mute you are destroying the experience. Only stop when you planned to stop. Its not play in one sitting (although that would be best) but don't take breaks every 5min because you are scared.
7) Don't break the immersion. It is very easy for people like me to let myself know its a game and therefore remove all fear/immersion. This is not the point of the game. Let the game take you in and become Daniel.
Holy mother of. Wasn't there also this flash game where you could only play after 6pm. In the end, you likely got caught and your photo was added to a gallery.
You guys on TL didn't bat an eye, you're just like, "I had to kill a crying baby and collect pigs blood while performing surgery on myself" "then later that day I got home to my haunted mansion and played Amnesia: Dark Descent, it wasn't very scary."

Totally agree. I played Penumbra exactly like this, and holy shit was it intense. I have yet to play this one, so I'm really looking forward to it .
I'm still at the scariest parts in the game so I can only manage 30 minutes a session before my soul starts to hurt from the insane atmosphere. I am doing most of the things listed to get the full experience out of the game though.
