Competition is more than alive, having fun is all up to you. There's still TDM and FFAs and such, but I'd say compared to the days of old, there are far less casuals and more competitives. If you're into that, then by all means please join, but keep in mind you'll be fighting against mostly people who've been playing for years. Of course, not all are pro-gamers, but still, experience is experience, and it matters a lot in such a skill-based shooter. Like I said though, TDM, CTF, FFA are still around and you can probably have a good bit of fun with those before you make a hard decision as to whether or not to invest your time and effort into this amazing game. ^^

http://www.quakelive.com/#!preview/qlpp18/race Some gameplay: I'll continue to play Quake 3 defrag however, because I have a hunch this won't deliver, and q3 is open source/mapmaking/ etc. Speaking of which... Should I try a Quake 3 defrag thread and see what kind of interest/involvement there is here on TL?

It's great that they're trying, but I don't think it will live up to DeFRaG or even Warsow race for that matter, especially considering what you mentioned regarding maps and such. As for a Quake 3 DeFRaG thread here, I don't know what to say... it would probably end up being the same handful of people posting in it and bumping it up. Personally, my mouth waters whenever I watch sick moves (not necessarily in Quake; it's one of the reasons that I've come to enjoy Half-Life 1 and 2 speedruns so much) so if you're going to post videos or link streams and such in the thread, then I'd be really interested in that. But I think very few other people would be. At the end of the day it's your call.

Now I haven't read up much on this, but going solely based off of what this video showcases, it appears as though it's all rockets all the time? I mean they haven't shown anything that is pure strafe jump, as well as no plasma or grenades. Again, I don't know how customizable it would be in that sense (if you can choose whatever weapons you want or you're restricted etc). But I think very few other people would be. At the end of the day it's your call. I'm pretty confident that they will have strafe-only and other varients besides just rockets. Personally, I'm a strafer, but I like rockets as well, especially with haste and quad (which I hope they include, along with grenedes, BFG, rail for aim maps, etc). No overbounces and gaz boost (plasma hopping) though. ![]() It's a pain in the ass to convert maps over to quake live, but people have been making them. Defrag maps, training maps, freestyle maps, fastcaps, you name it, many of them have been converted and created for Quake live and can be run through entering a practice match and loading up the map. But it will be nice to have a designated gametype and servers, and I'll need to set a /kill bind. http://www.quakelive.com/forum/showthread.php?1248-Defrag-maps-for-QL I'm sure some people here have come across Razor's strafe pad training map for QL. In regards to the Defrag thread, I'll give it a try, tomorrow or the next day. I made a pretty epic one on the MLG forums that was lost when the forums transferred over, but I have plenty of content and videos/demo recordings, and the scene is still quite alive with active servers and a recent Defrag World Cup in late 2012. I ran a search on TL and found a thread on quake 3 defrag from 2004 on here, so, it wouldn't hurt to make a new one, and if the thread doesn't pick up, or dies, then I'll let it go.

Hope this race mode is just a beginning and they're gonna develop it with time I know right! And yes, they better... run with this. MasterOfPuppets, I think you're going to really enjoy it. (And I really hope that some people from the speedrun threads and old quakers will enjoy and stop by as well.) Might be knowledge to everyone here, but Quake is one of the original games to begin montage/machinima videos, facilitated by its open source code, demo files, texture details, extensive customizability, replay capture, and eventually the q3mme mod. The Q3/defrag communities have revolutionized machinima making, and have produced videos that are still top tier beyond their day. And the content - runs and freestyle trickjumping - is incredible. I'm only aware of a few people, empire.zerg (from here) being the main one, who actually stream their runs and practice. But there's more than enough video content. ![]() btw, you all can feel free to add me on QL: TerribleTrioJon I play duels, CA, CTF, TDM, etc.
