This is the best PC sidescroller i've played, besides maybe Cave Story (also free, mentioned before). The dungeons are randomly generated (using 4 different themes), so every playthough is different. It's also very challenging, in a good way. When you die it's often in a funny manner and entirely your own fault, never due to some game bug.
The game does end, but I've only gotten to the end once or twice, and there are many challenges/secrets beyond simply reaching the end.
Dear lord I miss Q3... The 2k that is usually appended onto my name is a tribute to that game. Really wish I could have had the opportunity to play it competitively back in the day.
I see Enemy Territory is mentioned here, really great game! If someone who still plays alot could direct me to some servers who arent filled with bots, I would greatly appreciate a PM on that matter
Tried Quakelive earlier today, got owned as I have been in 1 person shooters for the last 10 years :D
Does anyone remember a game that was posted on TL some years ago where you were a ball created by an experiment and tried to save the world. It had awesome music and was quite fun.
yes, the orc priest class is basically playing as orc jesus, you can walk on water and random orcs will become your disciples. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup
"Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a free roguelike game of exploration and treasure-hunting in dungeons filled with dangerous and unfriendly monsters in a quest for the mystifyingly fabulous Orb of Zot."
Dungeon crawl is one of my facourite games ever, it takes a little while to get into and forever to actually win just once. There's no story or anything like that, the goal is just to go down the generated dungeon and it's branches, eventually retreiving and exiting with the orb of Zot, a task which took me about 8-10 hours of play on a single character to complete.
The thing is that dying results in the permanent loss of your character, which isn't as bad as it sounds. I have so far made about 800 characters in crawl, and 798 of those have died horribly, and when those 2 guys got out after 10 hours in the dungeon you can bet i was happy. It's really exciting to see how far you can get and challanging areas really feel dangerous and you'll need to be on your toes because you can't just reload to some previous save and charge in again. Infact he only time you'll die to some random BS stuff is on the first few floors when your character is new, when it really doesn't matter because creating a new character will take you between 0.1 and 15 seconds.
Your succes in this game is very much based on correct decision-making, and to make the right decisions you need to know stuff about the game. So if you should really check out:
if you run into something unkown or you just want to know stuff to get you going. For example here's some helpful info on the Tomb, one of the harder branches, from henzell learnDB:
"<jericho89> It's a cake-walk. But the cake is evil, and the filling is hydrochloric acid. And whoever blows out the candles WILL DIE IN SEVEN DAYS."
