If you go into wizard mode with a 99 charge wand of wishing, die, save the bone file, and pick up the wand of wishing, you'll have cheated without actually cheating!

I have also never ascended (killed by Famine on the Astral Plane), though if you want to learn there are some fantastic VODs (yes, really) on alt.org/nethack. Just go to the top all time players list: http://alt.org/nethack/topallclassplayers.html Select one you like, then go to browse TTYRECs, which are actual recordings of their sessions each time they logged in. Even if you don't get to see a straight-up ascension, you'll learn the habits required. Instructions for watching TTYREC programs are here: http://alt.org/nethack/trd/

When I play nethack with a tileset its still as much a rougelike as when I play it without.. Nethack is my favourite rougelike, though it should be said that I havnt really played any other "seriously".

![]() for anyone who's got a DS flash card, you can get these homebrews here. The best DS game I've ever played isn't even a DS game.

It takes a little bit more learning than Angband because it's so big but the help system is very well-written and it's FUN! At first it might seem a little easier than Angband but the enemies get much more difficult at the lower dungeon levels. www.t-o-m-e.net if you want to check it out.

It is, however, a very difficult and complex game, you have to learn an awful lot to be able to survive or escape most situations. But the complex gameplay combined with almost limitless possibilities of things you can do is really amazing. Once you got the hang of the game and are able to ascend most games, it gets a bit boring though, because you know exactly what you need to have in your inventory to be able to get through the latest levels and ascend eventually. So you're just hunting for all of those items or extra stats like resistances, most of which you'll get easily, and then you have almost no problems at all because you're well-equipped for every situation. The next step for me would be to play Nethack with self-imposed challenges (called Conducts - the game also detects some of these and will honorably mention it at the end in your score screen), for example there's the "Atheist" who isn't allowed to pray ever, or the "Pacifist" who isn't allowed to kill any monster (but he can let his pet do it) - which is very difficult, and some others. See http://nethack.wikia.com/wiki/Conduct Or, I could start playing Slash'Em, which is a supposedly more difficult version of Nethack.
