For just learning fundamentals as a beginner, Sheik is the best but only in PAL. Easymode NTSC Sheik ruins learning the character for most players and I feel like that is partially a reason why most NA Sheiks aren't exactly great.
I guess it works in NTSC if you just make it a challenge to yourself to never use down throw at least to begin with, so you actually learn to play the game before you do the guaranteed kills on stuff like Peach.
BTW, Tournament in Finland early August.
it's all about CF :D he's so fun!

Real talk, how long does a lifespan does Melee have left? I feel like a lot of the sponsorships were riding on Smash 4 being competitive to continue. Pretty much all the top players are veterans that played Melee on release. It's going to get to a point where people start retiring. Melee isn't an easily accessible game, so there's no flood of new players looking to get competitive. 2-3 years perhaps? Regardless, TL will probably still cover the game.

Who knows. I think on a grassroots level we definitely have awhile yet, but without any info on the contracts of the big sponsors or what Nintendo will do to continued Melee presence (if anything) there's no way to tell

Assuming Nintendo doesn't fuck us, Melee has another decade in it. People weren't riding on Smash4. If anything, they were worried Smash4 was gonna be good. The top players are not mostly veterans from release, and there is a ton of new blood. At least half the people I meet at tournaments started going in the last year or two.

Hungrybox, Mango, Armada, PPMD etc. started playing after release. Even M2K only played it "casually"(as in 20 hours a day but not competitively until many years later).
There's not a huge flood of new players but there's still a steady stream. Especially now the growth is perhaps bigger than ever. It's a rather unique game so it's unlikely it'll get replaced until a game entirely developed around its core mechanics is released(like a Project M that's not a SSB at all but a totally different type of a game, just having the same mechanics).
Also, as far as I'm concerned the sponsorships are because they realize that people actually like watching the game as it's imo by far the most entertaining game to watch currently and that's what counts.

To drive down to sydney or not to drive to sydney, that is the question...
I'm hesitantly interested

Oh, also, I played in a chilled round robin meet-up at CAOTIC's (from Smash Brothers documentary) house last night. Was really fun getting bodied, but I suppose I have a long way to go until I can take sets off the best players in my region.

melee is pretty unique in that it's turning into a big thing with huge amounts of hype, growth and massive tournaments happening everywhere
And really, sponsors have very little part to do with it. It's a grassrots organisation that's run almost entirely by the community. Sponsors help just a very tiny fraction of the top players get around and attend tournaments - the vast majority of tournament organisers and participants are just other passionate smash players

The majority of Melee players hasn't played since release. There's a ton of new players due to EVO and the documentary hype.
Before that there's many players that started playing around 07-09 as well (me included). The game gets new players all the time, it won't die!

Yeah there was a huge influx of players right around 06-07. Probably had something to do with a lot of the release players spreading it when they went to college.

Probably a lot of people getting interested in the series because of Brawl, and then moved on to Melee because it's obviously so much more awesome, heh.
For me, it was the wombo combo that made me discover the scene.

I've been playing melee on and off since release but finally decided to get back into it.
I'm so bad at all of the advanced things like l cancelling from ariels and wave dashing. Playing Marth although I used to play Kirby.
Also anyone have any insight as to why I can't view this forum on my sidebar? It's struckthrough for some reason on the customize sidebar bit.

Try posting in website feedback.

I had the same issue a while ago.
Go to Site Settings under your profile box in the top left.
Near the top of the site settings there should be a check box labeled "Hide filter buttons in top menu bar". Since the filters were removed, this box was checked for everyone by default. Uncheck it.
The old filters will return, so you can enable the section you want (in your case, Others) by clicking the appropriate filter tab.
You should now be able to customize your sidebar as you like.
