+1 to FB groups.
Sydney has a nice scene going and we might see ACL Sydney have a Melee competition on the side.

Thought so, every large city in the western world probably has a smash scene by now.

Even really small cities in Sweden has smash scenes now so, before it used to be only the two largest cities.

picked up melee about four months ago for the first time. playing mainly againt CPUs because no one here plays smash. its still awesome though.

a few things i can say to first timers like me getting into the game only now to help them out:

its been said before but picking up a character like jigglypuff for your first-time main isn't going to teach you the fundamentals you need to know to play the game. rather go with a marth, fox, falco or even samus or mario but i wouldn't recommend starting with some of the more eclectic characters (i.e pikachu, ics, cf, yoshi, luigi, puff). probl'y wouldn't recommend starting with sheik either, as she's a bit different to play, but that's just imo.

the most important early skills you will learn are movement, spacing and understanding hitboxes / timings of your characters moveset. combos will come later. DI and real techskill will come much later (I am not there yet).

wavedashing and shffling will come with time BUT ONLY if you try and incorporate them into your game ALL THE TIME. always be trying to l-cancel aerials, incorporate short hops etc. after a few weeks i basically i said to myself i am not moving anywhere unless i wavedash. trust me it gets so annoying air-dodging all over the stage that you will have no other choice but to get it right. you will soon be sliding around like a pro. once you can wavedash consistently with one character you can easily learn to do it with any other character.

learn to use x / y to short hop. its hard at first because its natural to want to really smash the buttons down hard when playing FGs. learn to use a light, quick tap and you will be fine. i found this really hard at first.

like starcraft, if you want to get better nothing beats actually playing the game. watch as many videos as you like to get ideas and see how the pros play but its no substitute for actual practice with controller in hand.

advanced techniques are great, but again they will not make you invincible. just because you are washdashing, l-cancelling your aerials, tech-ing etc does not mean you will automatically beat another player who is not using these techniques. you have to learn how to use these techniques not in isolation but incorporate them into your game in order to gain an advantage. no point just l-cancelling your aerials if you don't follow that up immediately with something else (some kind of movement, attack etc).

ALWAYS be moving, doing something. this is to keep your opponent on their toes so they don't have too much time to think about how to attack you, but in addition to that there is almost always a better position for you to be in in relation to your opponent.

be unpredictable. if you are always chaining the same moves together you will get busted. be creative. a lot of the game is about "reading" your opponent and reacting to what they do almost before they do it. if you are constantly doing the same things you will come short very quickly.

this game is awesome.

Man just started playing melee for realsies (been following the scene awhile). I was playing some friendlies with my brother last night and I still need to pick a main. I had my best games so far, with like 1 hour of attempting tech skills, as falco so I should pick him to main?

Pick who you have most fun with, not who you do best with. You'll enjoy the game way more.

Problem is when you get better at the game and find out different characters are fun at different levels.

My advice is just pick a character to main with and go with it for at least a month at a time. It doesn't have to be a 2 month researched life altering decision who your first main is and if a month later you think another character might be more fun invest a month into that character. You learn different things from different characters. What you shouldn't do is switch characters every week depending on what you lost to in pools. Switching mains isn't a big deal at any level as long as you stick with new characters long enough to learn more about the game. Don't be that guy that still plays link but hates life cause he's too invested to switch, just do w/e is fun with some sacrifices (1 monthish time limit) for getting better. Of course, the goal is to eventually find something you can't stop playing and stick to it since a month on one character is a hilariously low amount of time to learn the in-and-outs of it, but it is enough to go beyond just the surface of what you see on videos.

I'd just play as Marth, Sheik, Fox, and Falco and learn to play with them all decently. Then you can pick the one fitting your playstyle after you become better, It should be those 4 characters unless you -really like Ice Climbers, Captain Falcon, Peach or Samus or whatever, as those 4 are the best and most solid ones.

For just learning fundamentals as a beginner, Sheik is the best but only in PAL. Easymode NTSC Sheik ruins learning the character for most players and I feel like that is partially a reason why most NA Sheiks aren't exactly great.

I guess it works in NTSC if you just make it a challenge to yourself to never use down throw at least to begin with, so you actually learn to play the game before you do the guaranteed kills on stuff like Peach.

BTW, Tournament in Finland early August.
