We have created an irc channel (#tl-smash on Quakenet) for people to find others to play with on Dolphin or just to chat about Smash. Feel free to join!
Javi is a Fox main from Mexico. Smashboards is saying there were some recording mishaps so a lot of the pools matches were lost (or maybe never recorded). Hopefully all the bracket matches were =/
You mean Young Link. Jiggs can definitely be beat, but Hbox is just really good. Armada forced the longer sets with YL, and it was a snooze fest from there.
Mango got sucked into Armada's down smashes too much -_-. Good showing from everyone.
Any tips for a new player in melee (maybe a link to guides/good matches that demonstrate how to pull off good combos/spikes)? Just for some slightly competitive battles between me and my dorm floor mates, last semester we had super smash original, now someone's bringing a gamecube. Never had melee/gamecube, though I had a n64 and I've played smash a decent amount (I used fox). Thanks! ^^
it's hard to have tips for a new player because the metagame is brutally unforgiving. if you seriously want to get good prepared to put in a lot of work. my best advice:
get as technical as possible with whatever character you use. fox and falco are the best because it's so easy to improve with them through sheer tech skill. practice individual components (i.e. shine firefox ledge stall, perfectwd from ledge w/ invincibility, perfect wds and wavelands, shine oos, etc.) in specific blocks of time (i'm only gonna waveland for the next 5 minutes to get it down) so you put the time practicing to constructive use
you will get technical pretty quickly if you're consistent for ~20 min a day
find people in your area to play obv. melee community is very welcoming to new players. smash boards dawg
whoever you pick as your main (and it may take a while; explore but when you find a character who speaks to you, stick with him until your heart tells you otherwise) play them at least 90% of the time. most people stagnate because they get decent and then start fooling around w/ other characters
whoever you pick, watch that character's vids. you dont really need to bother with other random matches. for example if you pick fox there are a ton of good players to watch: for the basics i'd suggest chillindude829, mango, mew2king. to get an idea of how technical you need to be watch lovage, silent wolf, javi. and so on.
ive been in the community since '06 and rep socal (if you're in the area and have been part of the scene for any decent length of time we've prob met) so i do have a clue -shrugs-

I mean, play to win and all, but he's single-handedly responsible for ruining Melee's reputation.
If you're talking about Grand Finals, and you're actually looking to blame someone, I'd say put it more on Armada. He picked a character and playstyle to counter Hbox, forcing the camping. I don't think Hbox would argue if Armada went Peach, and the matches wouldn't have been as long/boring.
However, with the amount of prize money on the line, more power to the player to win however they want. You can't blame anyone for that.

Honestly, just play lot with other people. By having other people punish your bad habits, you'll automatically get better. If you're just starting, one of the worst things you can do is practice a certain combo. Just practice the basics and play with a ton of people.
