I'm gonna try something a little different. I got a nice hefty package of 30 or so images to share. The majority are simply amusing or have an easy-to-understand reference, but others will take some brainpower and/or knowledge of Touhou characters/other games. I'll post the easy images first, and then the harder ones subsequently. You get ten points for every "harder" image you understand (i.e., why it's clever or funny), but every time you need an outside reference to understand the image, subtract five points. When you're done, post how many points you got, and in spoiler tags, write how each image is funny or clever; in other words, identify the references in each one.
It's a lot of images, and TL has an hourly upload limit, so this post will only contain the "easy" images. No points for those ones, though; they'll get captions from me, while the harder ones won't.
Okay, time for the "hard" images. Remember, any image whose reference you understand (why it's funny or clever) awards you ten points. If you are forced to seek an alternate source of information to understand it, you lose five points. Once you've attempted to decipher all the image, post your score and image analysis (optional, but I wanna see how you think) in the following format:
Image 1: Sesame Street reference; Kermit frozen by Cirno, who enjoys freezing frogs Image 2: Mario reference; Mamizou in the Tanuki suit Image 3: Consulted a source; -5 points etc. etc.
A note about this one. The character in the foreground with the white hair is Dante, from Devil May Cry. I'm honestly not entirely sure about why he's there (though I have a hunch), so ignore him when attempting to understand the image. Concern yourself with the other three entities present.
I think you should start with Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, i'd say it's the most iconic as most people start off with that (according to polls) since it's the first windows Touhou game. If it's too frustrating then you can try easy mode or just play normal on Perfect Cherry Blossom (the 2nd, "chronologically") which is much easier.
Aeres, those "easy" images are amusing and funny. The hard ones, a couple still are to some degree. The extra hard i just have no idea lol.
In SWR/Soku Yukari has special move which she summons unblockable train from her portal She also is known for her traffic signs including railroad crossing So she summons Thomas~
Not sure on this one
Captain Morgan Rum and Murasa is a captain
Not sure on this one
Pretty overused i-___ thing Sak known for her "pad" and i-Pad is a real life product by Apple
UN Owen -> United Nations
Yuyuko having the ability to end anyone's life So parallels with her having Death Note which does that as well
Not sure on this one
Son Goku riding his cloud, so she rides her cloud as well
Not sure on that one
Reisen paralleled to that one superhero (whose name eludes me) with the same line shaped goggles who shoots laser beams out of it, and Reisen has eye laser abilities as well
and not sure on the last three
zzz I fail
edit: on obtaining the games google is your friend, and there are english patches for all the games as well (except PC-98 and TH13, not sure if that came out yet)
The Rinnosuke pic is quite similar to Persona 4's silent protagonist in terms of appearance. So instead of the MC summoning a Persona, it's Rinnosuke.
The Reimu's Balls pic is a reference to Curiosities of Lotus Asia. I won't tell you how, just go ahead and read it, because it's quite good.
The Marisa/Alice/Patchy pic is a reference to the music video for Michael Jackson's song "Smooth Criminal". Also, Marisa is a smooth criminal.
The Nue 404 was, in my opinion, the hardest one to guess that didn't make non-Touhou references. Nue's power is the ability to hide the truth of anything. This means that she can transform objects, or make them vanish. Basically, Nue hid the webpage you were searching for.
The Iku pic involves Minecraft. Creepers (the green thing she's riding) are dangerous enemies that explode when they approach a player. If they're hit with lightning, though, their explosion becomes three times more powerful. Since Iku summons lightning...
Shikieiki uses a mirror to peer into the truth in the hearts of the judged. Bronzor is a Pokémon based on a mirror.
One of Patchouli's spell cards is called ST Elmo's Pillar, which is why the red Muppet is in the background.
The last pic is another Persona reference. The two monsters, Belial and Nebiros, can be fused together to form a powerful Persona known as Alice.
2) Reference to Yukari's Spellcard in the fighting game?
3) I don't get it
4) I remember a commercial for some alchohol about some guys sneaking away from their girlfriends for a drink in the bar, then making that pose at the end. Don't remember the name tho, but it's probably captain something
5) I'm 100% sure this is a Michael Jackson reference, since I've seen this image before I just forget what.
6) Hilarious in Hindsight. The "Ipad" joke for Sakuya came out before the real Ipad from Apple.
7) no clue, other than something to do with the UN? I still don't get it lol
8) no clue, unless it's just a joke about her using the death note instead of actually having an ability to take anyone's life. Speaking of which, I remember a doujinshi I read where she had to leave Youmu for a while because she had to go haunt the guy in Death Note, which I guess would probably be the opposite of this joke.
9) My guess is that's a reference to her "unknown" identity? I don't get it.
10) Dragonball reference I guess.
11) I've seen this picture before, but I still have no idea why this is witty :/ I don't play minecraft tho.
I wanted to post some images today, but danbooru, the site I usually go to first for images, is being a huge pain in the ass, what with it being down for several hours earlier and now it's got a nice little thumbnail loading problem.
So here are two flash-games from urushi's website instead:
The first one is really just a very long math lesson with Koishi.
A math question is displayed on the green bar at the top, and you must answer the question within a given time limit. Questions start off easy, but get harder with every 5 questions you answer correctly. You start off with 3 hearts in total, and one is taken away for each miss (wrong answer or time runs out). The game is played entirely with your mouse, so don't try being cheeky and using your keyboard, because it won't work The big button with the kanji on it is the button to submit your answer.
There are 50 questions in total. To aim for a higher score, don't lose any hearts, and take as little time as possible to answer each of Koishi's questions.
In the second game, you control Orin and try to catch the falling spirits in hell. You do this with the left and right keys on your keyboard.
Once the game is loaded, there's two modes you can select. The first one on the left is limited mode, which is just there for you to get the hang of it (and was also the trial version, I believe). You have 60 seconds to catch as many spirits as possible (as well as the occasional zombie fairy). The more you catch, the more points you earn.
The second mode on the right is survival mode, which is the full game. Orin now has a life bar that determines how long you can stay in this mode. In addition to falling spirits, there are falling ofuda as well, that damage Orin if they touch her (but not her cart!). Occasionally, some of the SA and UFO cast will also show up for some bullshit reason to interfere with Orin's job, so watch out for those. I won't ruin the surprise(s) :> When Orin's life bar is depleted, the game is over.
And finally, the zombie fairy can be collected to heal a bit of health. It's important to note that anything that can be collected must be done with the cart and not Orin herself, and anything that can hurt Orin won't do anything if it only touches her cart.
I believe final scoring is just the sum of number of spirits gathered and number of seconds survived.
Feel free to post your final scores here :> I'd do it myself, but after noticing a huge amount of fail from my part, I decided my brain must be suffering from the drowsiness effects of my cough medicine that I took an hour ago :> I might give it a whirl tomorrow.

Anyways, I found out about it by listening so some epic songs which imspired me to try and pick up the game some how. Is there anyways for me to get the game in the USA that is in english?
There are US distributors that import esoteric japanese products, games, and other stuff. I can't think of any off the top of my head that aren't NSFW but I know a couple exist. Enough of them carry a large enough stock of Touhou games that buying one in the US isn't very hard at all. Typically people just download them for free.
Without getting into why, I'd say it's perfectly fine to download the games with zero repercussions. If you want to actually buy the games google searching "buy touhou <insert specific game title>" will probably net you with some decent results.
As for English, none of the games come with English. You'll have to find and download fan-translations and patch the game with them. http://www.gensokyo.org/english-translations Here's a link to some of the English translation patches for the later games. Unfortunately, I don't have a link to the English patches for the earlier games, but those also exist out in the wild Internets.
On October 17 2011 15:39 Yoshi Kirishima wrote: omg thanks for sharing! EPICLY made games (just from looking at the intros/title screens lol)
the first one doesn't work tho, it says 403 error no permission?
so i did survival mode first try i got 131 but im tired xD
edit: the first number shows 131, im guessing thats how many spirits i got?
I'm a retard lol. I fixed the link. For some reason, I linked to the flash itself, but didn't notice the links for both games were different.
For the scoring of survival mode: First number = number of spirits gathered (zombie fairy might increase that by more than one, not sure) Second number = number of seconds survived Third number = sum of above two, aka your final score
OMG thanks for showing! A good fast paced arranged of marisa's theme <3
i remember hearing one back in this thread I think that was also good (excluding the song that was only half marisa's theme, composed by minami from iosys) but can't find it anymore lol.
when i look on youtube most of the arranges are bad or unpleasing <_>
the iosys is, as far as im can tell, just an album full of 3rd eye
NOT THAT IM COMPLAINING BUT STILL EVEN THATS A BIT TOO MUCH
but minami + enka + 3rd eye is so much win. will find that album for just that one song (track 8)
iron attack looks to be a mix of angel mountain + some new stuff, i'm guessing leftovers that didn't make it onto angel mountain?
Eastnewsound just an instrumental of their recent release, how disappointing
seventh heaven maxion made a 12.8 album. Their stuff is very hit or miss (mostly the miss i will say) but i will give the ruse rain and magus night vocals a shot.
i'm not a big kissing the mirror fan but if you like that sort of thing this is apparently a good one
and everything else i will wait and see.
AERES WHAT ARE YOU DOING
also apparently one of them is a ten desires vocal album
