I watch the finals live at the studio. Soo seemed to have that quiet confidence going into the match. He didn't make much eye contact with fans in the stands and he have a lazer like focus in his eyes. After the match it felt like he couldn't wait to get out of there. I feel for ya man. That was a tough loss. I hope he gets stronger from this experience. GG soO!

At this point I'm not sure if I'm more disappointed at another 2nd place or that soO finished in semifinal during GSL Global Championship (which would earn Parting GSL marked title).

However, it's a bit easier to study other Asian languages if you're an Asian, there's like this similarity like between English and German, for example, but otherwise, we can't understand each other

Watching him vs Inno was painful. But he did well after. After Inno washed the floor with him he still could beat Dark, and not panic after he was down 1-0 against Classic. He must have some nerves. If he beats TY he could go all the way to the finals to lose once more. But i think TY will beat him. Tbh i'd rather see TY beating him then to see him lose in another final.
He's shown how solid and adaptive he is, especially against Classic. Even if it's quite long later, it'd be great to see him finally holding this trophy!

Despite being a KT fan, I was really cheering for soO and I'm soooooo happy that he won. I was afraid sOs will beat hero, and now its confirmed. I'm not saying he cant beat sOs, but sOs can beat any zerg in a best of 5. Hopefully Dark, Classic and Innovation gonna help him prepare.
This might just be soO's year. His ZvP is really good, but I doubt he could have beaten Inno or Maru. Now that both of them are out, soO pretty much has the best shot he's ever going to have at getting that GSL trophy.

it definitely is, he seeems to be very consistent in this mu atm with wins against the likes of Classic, Stats... It would be so sweet to see him win the GSL at last, and I believe he can do it !

I agree carrier is a pain to deal with in PvZ but not sure if those changes are ready in time for the semifinals. Anyway, I'm not too worried about it. As long as, soO scouts that early, he can always get aggressive and kills the opponent before things get out of hands. I recalled a match between herO and soO in online cup recently (Olimoleague if I'm not mistaken). herO tried to go carriers in Cactus Valley (not 100% sure on the map) and soO just went Hydra + Lings and killed herO before he even got like 3 carriers out.

Yah, me too. Ryung would be easier opponent for soO but again I'm not too worried because soO is all-around solid micro and macro player. He certainly doesn't make a lot of mistakes like Ryung did. Also, I like the fact soO is aggressive player which is going very well vs Stats who likes to macro up to mid-game style.

Don't know what to think. In IEM Stats literally washed the floor with Dark. Plus soO played vs sOs and thats a lot of info for Stats aswell. Obviously so0 can also look into the Dark vs Stats game. Hopefully Innovation and Classic and Dark will help him prepare.
Very sad for soO. So many times so close and always come short. But I admire him greatly for holding strong after down 0:3. With the history and everything, I thought that was it but he fighted back relentlessly until the very end.
Full credit to Stats who played exceptionally, but I do feel that Soo wasn't on top form today: he wasn't reacting to mineral line harass (stasis and adepts) even though there was no distraction I could see taking his attention, and he got supply blocked quite a few times. He should have lost game 5 on Cactus; he was supply blocked just as Stats moved out and started 7 overlords (we've all been there).
Perhaps Stats was just outplaying him which put him off-balance, but I don't think Soo played his best. Maybe he didn't sleep well or the nerves got to him or whatever, it happens.
Sorry Soo, I was really cheering for you (all 5 times). I hope you'll keep playing SC2, whether or not you ever win a GSL, you're my favourite player.
Not sure where soO goes from here. Will he return to the finals in Season 2 like he did in 2014? Will he give up entirely? Can't imagine what he's thinking, or what his path forward looks like.

I think getting to 5 GSL finals is is incredibly badass and admirable. I think that shows way more determination and skill than say, getting 1 GSL final and falling off the face of the earth, even if it doesn't feel that way to him.

Maybe, but it's a long way to go (looking at David Kim). I still have the feelin both terran and protoss is favored agaisnt Zergs. A zerg player has to play significantly better to be able to win. Playing equally good or just slightly better is simply not enough. I'm not saying that because soO lost this final, this is how i generally feel about LotV.
At the end of the day a second place in GSL is really good. When you make 5 second places that has to be worth a lot. I get that it sucks because you are so close to winning but still. I hope soO can look at it this way as well and keep trying!

We often talk about the winners, the redemption stories. We should talk more about soo.
I saw (of course!) every GSL final soo was in. I always was confident he would win, because he was too good on his path up to the finals. They could take a map from soo here, they could take a map from soo there. But they could not defeat him.
Except for the final series. Even when he was pitched against Zest or Innovation, I knew he could win. But he even lost versus Dear and Classic.
Still, what soo offers is zerg consistency (I main zerg) on a level far beyond my understanding of the game. But there is one thing I love more about soo than being the zerg hope: His mental strength.
I saw how DRG broke after his GSL/GSTL loss. I knew that he will not come back, even though he is my #1 SC2 zerg I will be a fan of forever. But soo does not break.
This mind/soul does not break.
You can slap soo down, but you cannot break him. You just can't. Winning a GSL means you will be noted for the time being. What soo did for the perspective of zerg, what he pulled of, even though now he is close to be the ultimate kong, will live on.
Anyway, despite the pain of losing GSL again, I hope soO looks around TL and realizes that so many people were rooting for him, even the people who thought Stats would win regardless. I hope he will take that as encouragement to continue and win GSL this year!
I saw soO today at SSL Premier broadcast. He looked good and seemed to be in a great spirit as well. Fans was cheering for him when people spotted him on the display and he was smiling about that :D.

Yes he managed in the end, but it wasn't very convincing. I think its safe to assume every protoss will try to do that against him in the future so he has to find a solution for dealing with this problem.
Well, Trust took a page of Stats' playbook given Stats used it heavily in Season 1 Final. soO handled it better as the series went on but still not good enough. He left lings near the mineral patches to kill the wards before they were triggered which was a good move but he couldn't kill the wards fast enough. I would add spine crawlers to kill the wards faster.

Well, that is true. However, the amount of lost mining time was already more than enough for soO to make like 2 spines per base. Trust did Stasis Ward like 6 7 times per match. In some occasions, the ward was triggered for the entire mineral line of 14 drones + queen and a bunch of lings. Even if he didn't want to build spine, he should commit to some range units like 1 or 2 Hydras/Rouches instead of 2 to 4 lings. Those lings just couldn't kill the wards fast enough given there was not enough surround surface due to the wards were placed next mineral patches.
If somehow Dark manages to beat Maru, hopefully his zvz will carry him trough a group victory. I see soO having great chance for another finals (to possibly lose vs Byun or TY??). He has to play Rogue, than probably Classic. But if hes second i don't see him beating Byun. What are the chances soO can win his group, or if Maru beats Dark he won't lose vs him?

I actually think SoO have quite a good chance vs Byun. SoO is a lot better at holding reapers compared to Dark, and Byun hasn't exactly been on his best form (not saying he's bad, but compared to how dominant he used to be, Byun is definitely beatable now). I think SoO has a great chance vs both Byun or TY, and I hope he doesn't drop out of his group. He needs to get Gold! Or at least another Silver I guess..
Well, soO has done it again. soO never failed to advance to the final if he made out of group stage in regular GSL seasons. So, it's very likely that soO will make it to another final.
soO has done it again for the 6th time. I do feel bad that he couldn't really show his victory emotion given his opponent is Classic, good friend and former teammates.

GuMiho is very strong in mech but Innovation plays mech vs Z is super scary. So if soO practices with Inno on that, he is golden. This may be his chance!

I think (hope) that he's saving builds. Very likely that he's just playing standard and doing the same build every game while saving his super secret cheddars build for the finals.
He is played funny builds and overall was OK. Good micro, but not ideal mid-game decisions. He not played his style, i'm sure 100%. Even on ladder stream he used other builds. And Gummi used mech, his main power.
soO made some mistakes in semis vs Inno. Like he had 99 workers and low limit for army.
Also, he don't counter-attack mech, not used nydus, drops and etc.
soO always avoids giving away information before important matches, so I'm not worried yet. Gumi is a strong player though, so it will most definitely be tough.

It is depending on the timing as AbouSV said. If he streams during regular KR time AKA very late in NA time, then it is almost Korean. But if he streams late in KR time which is like noon NA time, there are more English-speaking viewers. If verecunda is around, translation is not an issue. So Korean or English doesn't matter if he is around. Still I prefer Twitch, Panda is slow and its weird UI, some banners flying around is distracting.
I don't mind soO streams on Panda given he streams on Afreeca as well. But please stream on Twitch time to time for NA and EU fans!
From what I watched the other evening there seemed to be a lot of Chinese viewers speaking English, talking about Chinese players and such, but with all the random English discussion with the Korean and Chinese that I don't understand it was indeed messy. I also think the text on screen can be incredibly messy, especially with a cluttered UI that has always reminded me of Neopets and... Anyway.
I might try watching again, but I honestly won't be that excited about it if I do. </3

That's a disaster for soO. He was one overlord scout away for possible 4-0-ing the group. Now hes out, in next GSL he will not be seeded during group selection. Unless someone from this season top4 won't make it to RO16 next time. Fat chance. No more easy ZvZ or ZvP pick as first opponent.

Out of all the pro Terrans, I don't think anyone is more different than Gumiho and Inno. Gumiho is famous for being unpredictable, for using strange builds and weird strategies, because he doesn't have the sheer mechanical talent to execute standard Terran builds very successfully. Inno on the other hand is famous for being totally predictable, for using completely standard builds refined to perfection, because he's the most talented mechanical player to ever touch SC2 and can execute standard Terran builds with incredible success.
soO is probably better off searching for other practice partners.

I haven't seen soO playing vs Mech recently but I assume he would have practiced vs Mech quite a bit given he is in a tournament with GuMiho and Inno who both play Mech often vs Z. If he beats GuMiho, he is fast-track to the final (again ).

From recent tournaments where herO played really well there are lots of vods to study. I have faith he can figure something out if they meet. But first, Rogue will have an entire week to do that. Imo it's more likely that Inno or Rogue will make the finals from lower bracket. But if herO makes it trough Rogue i'm favouring him vs Inno.

few weeks ago they played in Masters Colisseum, and soO won 2-0. Maybe it doesn't mean anything, but Gumi didn't look invincible at all in group phase so i have faith he can take him down.

I think soO will get his revenge on gumiho this time, like when he surgically beat zest in the 2014 s3 gsl semifinals. I think he is at his best when he isn`t super confident in his skills, thinking he just needs to play solidly to wins because of being better skilled, but when he is the underdog, and in his mindset needs to prepare to upset the favorite. Just what i feel.
So i bet he makes it to the finals, and maybe beats hero or whoever, who would all be favored against him.

soO is a favorite against special meaning that the sc2 viewers believe he should win (cuz korean vs foreigner), but it looks like they practice against each other and its not one sided, and special is very good at preparing builds.
What is good for him is that 2nd place is 140 000€. It's less pressure. Because in 2014 GSL 1st was 60 000€ and 2nd 10 000€... We forgot that often but Soo has lost like 200 000€ with all his 2nd places...

Dude, it is a part of a progamer's DNA to be competitive. As a competitive person myself, I can tell it sucks big time to lose, especially losing in a high-stake situation like final. Money or not, the feeling of winning is a big deal too. For soO, he lost 7 big final now. $140K does sooth the pain of course but it doesn't fix the mental pain that keeps haunting him.
Oh wow, yet again. Still a great achievement to get so far, but in his case it just feels bitter. The money is a major consolation this time though. I'm looking forward to finally posting here one day about a victory.

Well, this loss certainly hurts him quite a bit given this is his biggest loss so far and his 7th overall in big tournaments. But this has been a great year for soO if not his best. $140K is a big payday and almost $200K earning this year in total. He should be proud of his performance this year.
A lot of fans really root for him everytime he is in the final. If he keeps making to final, the odd will finally catch up to him and he will win. Hopefully, it will be another great year for soO next year.
I hope he can bounce back from this loss, in game 6 it looked like he was having a stroke at some point, maybe he put too much pressure on himself to make this the one tournament that redeems his past failures as he said in his article? Anyways there's another year ahead and his overall performance looked very strong, so if he doesn't lose motivation he can still make it happen!
I'm sure soO is touched by all outpouring concerns but I don't think soO is gonna quit or retire if that is you guys worry about. This loss stinks as always but this is not his first loss. As history shows, soO will continue to make to more finals. If he was gonna give up due to big losses, he might have done long ago already.
I don't see it mentioned many times. But soo definitely overachieved this blizzcon. He was going to be an underdog no matter who he would face in the finals. In all parallel universes, Soo would have a much more difficult road to the finals, which I don't think he would make given current form (defeating Neeb with korean level aggressiveness is nothing to brag about. See how neeb lost to Zest last year after dominating PVP late games).
OTOH, soo might take it extremely hard precisely because of the golden opportunity. He might recognize this chance is going to be once in a life time (ridiculously easy blizzcon road to finals with one zvz away from the trophy). Soosyphus or a happy overachiever? I think both, and I think soo should embrace both as well (the denial of either one is illogical and will tear him apart).

I wouldn't count him out just yet. His ZvP is still great, his ZvT improved a lot, even tough he lost against Rogue his ZvZ is also great. But he still needs to improve his gameplay, because there is room for improvement. Question is, after yet another 2nd place will he be able to find his fire inside? Or does he event want to find it? The Blizzcon final broke my heart because you could see in the last game that he was paralyzed mentally. He didn"t take the obvious steps to win.
His only other weakness I found was some LotV game against turtle mech, where he got sometimes very much ahead but didn't go for the jugular, and even if you're ahead, letting the terran get 5 bases and 200/200 with upgrades is too dangerous. It's less the case this patch with the raven nerf, so it might play in SoO's favor.
soO just streamrolled Scarlett at Ro8. I actually felt bad for her as the series just looked brutal.
Now soO vs Stats. GSL 2017 S1 Final rematch. I actually prefer Classic over Stats in ZvP. Stats is very defensive so it is hard to break him. Let him turtle to mass carriers or deadball ground army can be tough for soO. However, I have faith in soO to make to another final and hopefully win it this time.

As much as i'd like to see soO win, its foolish to see his spot in the finals as granted. Stats will be a hard opponent and it can go either way. Now he lost ZvZ 3 times in a row vs Dark from their last 3 encounters, plus he lost two ZvZ vs Rogue,one at Blizzcon finals and one at 2017 GSL S3 RO16. He also lost vs Losira at IEM. A year ago he looked invincible in ZvZ but not anymore. He really has to step up there. If Maru makes the finals, that will be a tough one too. First, Maru will have Rogue as practice partner and Jin Air backing him up and thats' a huge advantage. On the other hand soO showed promising signs vs terran at Blizzcon vs Gumiho and Special, and in GSL vs Alive.
If he makes the finals again, i also think his opponent will be favoured. But not necessarily because of mentality. One thing i noticed in his finals that he is always on the reacting side. Its always his opponents that come up with new builds/strats, and not vice versa. He barely has an answer for those stuff. He has to find a way to surprise his opponents once. Overlord drop nerf is not coming handy for him in that regard, but the Anti Armor missile nerf could help a bit. But the droperlord nerf is stronger i feel, since i don't rate his ZvT late game strong and don't think he should go there against Maru.
It's also worth to mention we all saw both Maru and Dark failing to deliver when they had the chance, so it will be a battle of who can overcome himself. Stats is also underrated, if he makes the finals he will win. He is still very underrated. He didnt have a good Blizzcon run, but still won GSL and SSL last year.
I see what you mean. I never underestimate Stats as he did win vs soO last year after all. However, what I was saying is that soO has such a strong mentality (or sheer force of luck) before the final. There were multiple occasions that I thought he lost it and wouldn't make it to the final this season such as Rogue vs soO quarterfinal (S2 2017) or soO vs TY (S1 2017) and somehow he managed to come back spectacularly vs TY or even luck on his side vs Rogue . That is why it is so hard to stop soO before the final. It will be the first time in GSL history if soO lost it in semi. I would love to have a soO vs Maru in the final. Even if soO loses, Maru surely deserves it.
At this point i only care about soO. Hes the only player who keeps me watching sc2. At this point nobody else has an interesting story line. I only want to see him lift a trophy so he can retire in peace. I don't care who else wins GSL.

I'm quite sad. I was really hoping he could take the trophy this time. But i'm also worried. One of my suspicion got confirmed yesterday when he said he doesn't prepare specifically and does not have many practice partners. That's crucial imho to win trophies in such a long tournament. It was clear yesterday that he was caught off guard quite many times, and did not really had answers for Stat's game plan.
soO qualified to GSL Super tournament. He lost to Cure 2-0 in upper bracket semifinal, then went down to beat Byul and Cure 2-1. If he can only barely go trough Cure maybe its a good thing he didn't play the finals vs Maru and overall it is not a good sign..

That is true, and he mostly loses to INno's timings it feels like. When the game goes late (like Year Zero in this finals) soO plays a fantastic game imo

This can be the tournament, but Dark or Stats will be a tough gum to chew. I think Stats will beat Dark, as usual :D herO won't be an easy opponent too, he can always cheese it happen.
Would be nice if he wins IEM, then grabs the momentum to win GSL aswell :D But first he has to work on his hellbats defence. Every single time Inno or a terran makes a hellbat push he dies straight... either from the timing attack or from the follow up attack...

I wouldn't say that after a 2-3 loss, it's not like Serral got swept; Serral needs to play a better version of his game to beat soO, I'm still convinced he takes if he plays at his best.
SoO has been the best or a very top contender in ZvZ for very long while also being extremely dominant for a certain period of time. That's why he's probably the GOAT in the matchup over Serral and NesTea, who have been similarly dominant over a shorter period.

I wouldn't say that after a 2-3 loss, it's not like Serral got swept; Serral needs to play a better version of his game to beat soO, I'm still convinced he takes if he plays at his best.
SoO has been the best or a very top contender in ZvZ for very long while also being extremely dominant for a certain period of time. That's why he's probably the GOAT in the matchup over Serral and NesTea, who have been similarly dominant over a shorter period.
Well that's another way to try to have better chance at succeeding at some task, do the same thing but try to do it better. But I think this sudden rise in level of Serral's game (from best foreigner to top korean level, from early to second semester of last year) was by mixing in more strategies, playing series map by map. I dont think he suddenly got faster or better at macro etc, or more cleanly executing his plans, just had better plans, becoming harder to prepare against.
I believe something similar may have happened to soO when, while already having hit the top level as one of the monster of mechanics, he changed his game to finally succeed against zest (who was then on his literally "Is best" form) at gsl season 3 2014 semifinal.
I actually agree that Serral is the best at ZvZ right now even if he lost to soO. because this is a field where these 2 aren't the only players, so its not only head to head that matters. How each performs against other zergs like Rogue and Dark also matters, but i think soO's game is very good against Serral, and if they face each other again, if its another clash of 2 players imposing their best standard, go-to, zvz like that epic series seemed to me, i give soO the slight edge.
But i have a feeling Serral isn't on the Serral hype train like us fans tend to be, and knows its not that simple to just win against anyone, so after a series like that he will try more to avoid the same undesired result than just executing better

I'm sure Serral rose to prominence by varying his style, but what I saw today was a performance of very high level, just not as solid as BlizzCon's.
soO is evidently a true master of Roach Ravager and played it extremely well today; however, Serral's in BlizzCon form(less blatant errors, better decision making) should have been able to go toe to toe with soO and triumph(3-2, I'd say) as he was not crushed by soO's superior control but by his impressive ability of striking exactly when he had the fatal advantage.

Im discussing Serral vs Soo since the OP was about comparing them. I think they will have or could have a great rivalry since their styles mesh into a very exciting standard zvz, and maybe that can evolve into more strategic play like stats vs serral or soO vs zest. So i wish soO gets back to the top to make this even better, so I also hope he wins IEM, for more obvious reasons as well ^^. I also agree that Serral wasn't crushed by soO's superior control, as i think Serral's control may be even better.
I hope soO faces dark in the finals who is also playing zvz at a high level, but i have a feeling soO knows what to expect from him and it would be much easier then vs stats ^^

Actually Smix almost cried aswell while she translated. You could hear in her voice. Was also a touching moment.
But when soO didnt respond for a question, he just froze for a few moments and didn't know what to say. The whole thing is very emotional, rewatched the whole thing like 10 times already :D
What a great moment for soO. Man, when he was 0-2 down, I thought the same thing he said. The curse might be too strong. I actually went to bed after that. Too painful to watch him lose again. Then, watched the VOD later and he won. That was well deserved. A true testament on what willpower can do. Congratulations soO!
After his blizzcon second place i was so heartbroken. Hard to describe the feeling, but i was sure he will never win a GSL / Blizzcon / IEM . Now when he was down to 0-2 getting outplayed i almost closed twitch. Iam glad i didnt.

I don't see things as grim. He already qualified for Blizzcon and his games vs Gumiho were promising. Rogue is a beast in ZvZ we all knew that. soO gave some free wins for Rogue for sure.

It is a hard group. I wouldn't mind if he lost but I expected a bit more preparation or effort. Jesus, the first map was facepalmed moment. The second map vs Rogue was just a mess. The rematch was a bit better but still surprisingly underwhelming. Both series are just not what I expected from soO. His ZvZ is usually much better than that. Just some random early tech up, upgrade, late third and yet doing nothing with it except sitting at home. The whole thing looked like Rogue was trolling soO and soO were just clueless.
I'm happy that he won IEM and already secured the spot at BlizzCon but at the same time I'm worried that he is free-falling just because he got what he wanted.
Totally agreed! soO’s fan club hasn’t seen much activity since his IEM championship, so this was a great bump! Way to go soO!!! He completely deserves the victory for TSL 5. He worked so damn hard! ><
Quite interesting, when it comes to GSL soO barely takes a map vs Innovation, and if its a 1/4 1/2 or final most of the time its a 3-0 4-0 or 4-1. But in these smaller tournaments he beats Inno here and there...
