video for the making of the mv showing that girl. Also some random kid at my school had a gangnam style wallpaper and "강남스타일" written all over his pencil case and the kid next to him was watching the mv on his laptop, this has gone too far.
How do you know either of those kids weren't already into kpop? I'm sure if someone saw you listening to Gangnam Style and didn't know who you were they'd think you only knew the song as well.
And for that matter, why is that such a bad thing? It's a good song, I'm glad people are enjoying it.
It is great that kpop is expanding. And even if those kids were jumping the bandwagon because of gangnam style how would it be any different from when any of us were introduced to kpop. I jumped straight into Kpop after hearing a few popular songs at the time.

Pencil case? Are you in middle school?
Since when does owning a pencil case = middle school?
Since people write things on it, like Gangnam Style. Especially if it was written in Hangul by people who know nothing about k-pop or Korean culture like you mentioned.
It's popular because the song is as catchy as any popular western music nowadays, and the M/V is really funny/crazy. Stop being a hipster about it, I don't think it has gone too far.

I can honestly say I haven't seen a pencil case at any educational institution that I've attended for the past 5 years, which is odd now that I think about it.
The only time I would even use a pencil would be during mathematics classes.

I'm not trying to be a hipster, I said I think it's an alright song with a decent MV but personally I don't find it to be as good as people are saying it is.

To me, a black guy saying words that rhyme does not qualify as hip-hop. That's rap. And a song like the above posted paper planes is not a very good representation, mostly because all the guy did was talk about boom boom take your money.
so we're still stuck in the public enemy era huh
Edit: OK, call me a purist, but to me hip-hop is about class and race struggles and expressing a culture that stands outside of the establishment or "master's house." When it devolves into bragging about how much money you got, how many guns you can blast, etc it's lost all meaning. That type of rap is no more than giving in to the mainstream values and aspirations that hip-hop was created to resist in the first place.

I've been saying it's a derivative of that lmfao trash they were playing here on the radio a while back.

The thing about its mass popularity outside of kpop is that most of it has nothing to do with the song and everything to do with how ridiculous and hilarious the MV is. I've heard multiple people say that it's korea's take on the japanese kind of weird that catches on in internet memes and shit. It doesn't hurt that the song is good of course but that's not really the point.

^ LOL. Does he at least speak Korean or is he just singing what's romanized on his lyrics sheet (a la broken English in k-pop songs)? Will be an interesting release nonetheless.
