To ensure this thread won't be closed, you must adhere to several a number of simple rules;
  • Please use spoilers when quoting a post with pictures and/or videos.
  • When posting large quantities of media (pictures or videos), please begin spoilering after the first piece. Grouping related videos in the same spoilers & labeling is recommended.
  • No reposting of old material unless justified
  • Posting any material with little or no relevent discussion accompanying it
  • No passion-induced flaming of each other because 'x said y sucked' etc.
  • Keep the expression hate of music individuals/groups to a minimal level
  • No 'pagetopping' in any form whatsoever, as it constitutes spam equal to posts similar to 'first'.
  • No vulgar fan fics or wet dream stories. It is creepy, weird, and it dehumanizes the people who you are here to celebrate/discuss.
  • Normal posting standards that you find throughout the rest of the site still apply and will be enforced more strictly from here forward (2012/03/11)

Due to the poor nature of this thread in the past, temporary two-day bans will occur more than often if people slip up.

What's KMD's overall sentiment on Kpop groups making albums/songs in other languages, just to spread market value? ie, SNSD making japanese album, and american album. etcetc? personally i don't really like it. The k-pop-ness just doesn't spread in other languages/countries that well imo.

Well at least in America, the idea of "Idols" is completely foreign, which hurts it a bit. The girls are as tied to the songs as the music and lyrics are. I mean, sure, we have pop stars and celebrities, but it's not quite the same thing. A K-pop idol (and the J-pop ones as well, though I don't follow those as closely) is an image, it's a role and personality. You're not "someone who makes music", you're an icon for more or less anyone following you, which includes most of the young adult to adult crowd in Korea (and Japan). In contrast, I could tell you who some of the big pop icons are in America, but they don't permeate society the way idols do.

Another reason, and one a bit more easily seen, is the type of music. Many K-pop hits (especially the title songs) are bubblegummy, fun songs that haven't been part of American media for quite some time. It's quite different compared to the type of party rock and pop music you hear in the states. Some female audiences find it childish (mostly because it's not talking about sex and drinking :\ ), many guys find it girly. It's nearly the epitome of acquired taste, so I'd really never expect it to seep into American markets any time soon.

Japan seems to embrace them a bit more, but I think they'll never have quite the same sales over there because Japan has their own set of idols and groups. Only the really big names or really good groups are probably looked at, you're not going to get every group that pops up.

Yeah im pretty sure thats a korean/japanese phenomenon. Or well might exist in other parts of asia aswell, dont know any european countries that has that sort of strict image on their musicians.

Well to me KARA's Japanese albums have pretty much the same exact feeling, in fact I think they have so far been better than most of the Korean ones so to me it doesn't matter.

No one can challenge Sistar for most hard working group, they are everywhere, never catching a break, always promoting, that's crazy...

I applaud your audacity and respect your choice, even though it be a foolish one; if any one being could compare to Lee Ji Eun it might be Younha. But you've overstepped your bounds, your fan-dom has blinded you to the truth. Think of this as a reality check. Im mearly trying to bring you to a better place; into the light of truth!

Lets get this battle under way.

On the left we have Younha, the perspective Usurper, first lets take a look at her credentials.
- 24 years old, basically ancient in kpop years.
- Failed her first 20 auditions because of her repulsive appearance, until one apparently blind man took pity on her.
- Sued Lion Media
- Has a TRIAL record

So whats so bad about younha you might wonder? well at first glance she is just a normal idol but why would normal idol file
a law suit with the company she's worked with for 6 years? is she stupid? is she just ungrateful?

Younha sued Lion Media, for "damages" and that's if you use the word damages to describe something she was already obligated to do by the contract she signed herself. not only do I not see how you can stab the company you work for in the back like this, but to make things worse after the third mediation between her and Lion Media where they would not accept her completely unreasonable terms she burst into tears? who likes a crybaby?

On the right we have Korea's little sister, the goddess, the pure, the lovable Lee Ji Eun.

- 18 years of age
- Stage name IU means You and I, how much kinder and cute-er can you get?
- Advocate for end to child bullying
- Has won 10 awards this year alone (28 lifetime)
- Just look at that face!

Whats so great about IU you might wonder? Well, i don't want to crash TL servers so ill leave this for another day. But hey, whats so bad about IU then? Well i'm glad you asked, because this is a very easy question. Nothing at all, you are staring at the anthropomorphic representation of all that is infallible, pure, wise, smart, beautiful, cute, funny, esoteric, lively, kind, and loving.

IU court case? none exist, she doesnt whine about her contract and instead chooses to act like a human being that has a shred of dignity/self-respect.

IU scandal? Another fallacy, although many have trued to frame our beloved Lee Ji Eun (think Popsicle and Lipton incidents) None have succeeded in their quest to dim this bright light.

IU 1 Younha 0

Disclaimer- This post was only written in good fun and i like Younha alot to actually. also, HaXX, COME AT ME BRO.

Korean just sounds better to me. It's a beautiful language. If I was interested in listening to Japanese music I would listen to that, and we aren't exactly short of music in English. K Idols have pretty much zero chance of gaining household name status in the west in the foreseeable future.

I'm pretty sure most kpop groups work around the same amount, they have pretty intense work schedules. Obviously the more well known ones are going to have more gigs, but that doesn't mean the others aren't working as hard. Though I'd definitely argue that Sistar's live performances feel like they have a lot more heart in them, than other kpop groups.

and then being publically outed by their management for not working hard enough.

i watched alot of their promotions during lovey dovey. they were dead and asleep during variety show performances and interviews. at least some of them hold out better than others. jiyeon is probably one of the more overworked ones for sure though.

clearly CCM is playing the bad guys as a marketing stratagy to get sympathy votes for t-ara?

Why hasn't there been more public outcry against these management companies. I think this problem of overworking arises from the fact that the groups have very little autonomy.
