I was very disappointed about Avatar.
- The scenario is exactly the same as Pocahontas. James Cameron said wrote the story in 1994, only 1 year before Pocahontas was released. Either he is a fucking liar, either he must have been really pissed off when seeing the Pocahontas storyline LOL.
- The Navis have very poor facial expressions, almost inexistant.
- Every single character is very superficial, almost caricatural.
- There are a lot of non senses in the movie. eg : Since humans finally dont care about the native casualties and are only intersted in the minerals, why don't they send long range missiles destroying everything in a 100 km radius, instead of suiciding their helicopters...
But I spent a nice time at the theater, and didn't feel bored. I also really like the glowing stuffs in the dark forest, it looked awesome in 3D.

+1
I can't believe people on this site didn't get the reference, especially with the floating mountains...
This movie was absolutely amazing, and so far the only people who don't like it are the most die hard movie haters. I don't even say snobs, because I know movie snobs who loved this. The people hating it are the people that can't enjoy any movie because they are so jaded into needing ever aspect of something to be perfect for it to be enjoyable.
The storyline yes was predictable, but that's because it follows the childhood dream of being able to go to sleep and be everything you want to be, living in a friendly society. To say it was a shallow movie shows how you did not grasp the deeper phsychological themes going through it.
The grizzled marine captain was a great potrayal of the 'total badass' character
The best way to describe this movie is by calling it 'A dream come true'

I'm rather curious in general why so many have such strong feelings on this particular movie on both sides.
I mean, I didn't love it, I didn't hate it. It had killer special effects, a subpar plot and was enjoyable to watch while I was watching it. I would imagine in the long term it will be fairly forgettable as soon the next insanely pretty sci-fi epic comes along, whenever that happens to be, but it does what it does fairly well.
Top to bottom I would just say its a very solid 7 and I don't understand how anyone could rationally give it either a 10 or a 4.

wiki unobtainium. Running joke indeed.
And I'm amused at all the people who ripped on Avatar because of the plot. I mean really? You can't just take a movie for what it is and not poke holes at the plot. Yes, the story and characters were somewhat cliche. I thought "lol, indians vs cowboys much?" for the first hour or so but that didn't stop me from enjoy the visual grandeur of the movie (watched it in 3D, was fun).
For the people who thought Avatar was total trash, what movies have you liked in the past year? I'd like to hear your comparisons.

I'm with Plethora. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either. It certainly was worth the money and time I spend on it.
The plot could be better yes, but it was exiting enough and + Show Spoiler +long range missiles or nukes wouldn't had been fun besides why dont we long range shoot everything? Because sometimes you need human response in fighting situations specially when you are going after "civilians".
All in all my only problem with the movie was the + Show Spoiler +ending. Not the ending ending but how the last battle unfolds. I dont like using Deus Ex Machina type of narrative tools. Seriously out of nowhere Rhinos and Birds come out nowhere to save the day.
Amazing visuals more than make up for any stupid gripe you might have with the movie. If I can get this in 3D for my home TV I will watch it again under the influnce of heavy hallucinogens. The forest scenes will be awsome :p
Even thou most people were rotting for the Na'vis I was rooting for the Humans. The Sarge was one of the coolest characters I've seen in a while. I'm not talking about his depth, in fact the lack of is what makes him so compelling.
I coulnd't stop grining when they + Show Spoiler +shot down the tree. I know it was sad but the explosions were beatiful and I love how much of an overkill it was.
Did this make anyone want to play SC2 even harder? Becuase I was dyieng to play around with one of those banshees hahahaha.
BTW I play Terran so maybe thats were my affection comes from.

I really enjoyed the new Star Trek film and District 9 - they were both a lot of fun. Kind of responding to some other posters, I didn't consider either to be some flawless masterpiece, but simply entertainment done well. Quite well written, with memorable scenes etc.
I don't have super-high standards for hollywood blockbusters, and CAN take them for what they are - like I said, I was expecting Avatar to be phantom menace standard, not some work of art, or even all that good. It was much worse then I expected, so I was disappointed. No one is arguing that the visual grandeur wasn't great, just that for a film which has essentially had infinite resources and 10 years, and been incredibly hyped, a credible story and remotely decent dialogue are expected.
It was a film involving an alien planet, and 3D battles with mech's helicopters and aliens. I kind of thought it would be hard for that not to be great...but it was boring. That made me sad.
My favourite film of the last year was Up, which I thought was brilliant, but I think District 9 and Star Trek are better comparisons as they had similar goals to Avatar.

I guess for me, I didn't see the trailers nor did I hear about the hype, haha. In fact, I didn't bother clicking on this thread until after I saw the movie. (At first I thought the movie was Avatar, the Last Airbender, then I saw posters and was laughing at the blue skinned characters, etc) So going into the theater with low/no expectations, I came out rather satisfied. I can see how if you had heard the hype, the enormous budget, and how long it took to make the movie, you could be disappointed in some aspects.
Up is also my favorite film of 2009. It was a very warming film. But that doesn't take anything away from Avatar, which I thought was the most visually fun movie this year. I just think people shouldn't be so critical about movies. You'll walk away sorely disappointed nine of out ten times.

Loved it. Dunno what wasn't to like.

I just seen this. The visuals are breathtaking. The story is not bad i actually enjoyed it but leaves you with some funny question marks in your head: + Show Spoiler +They spend a lot of time making the Avatars, training people to control them and then this though guy says "if you don't convince them to evacuate in 3 months we blow their asses out of there." What the hell was that? Why didn't they blast the area in the first place?
Also whats up with Jake and his wheelchair, they have the technology to remotely control biological bodies and they can't fix some paralysis. lol

I'm 26 and I haven't cried in a theatre since Lion King; this expresses praise better than words ever could. Same here. It's amazing how James Cameron started his career without any related educational background by making some primitive special effects in cheap movies and after 30 years of work he managed to make Avatar..
Also, regarding scenario critique, let's take this for ex: - The scenario is exactly the same as Pocahontas. + Show Spoiler +FUCK Pocahontas. Go watch Avatar!

Movie was ok. Too long, shit pisses me off with movies having to be 2:30~3:00 these days. The 3d version was cool and all, but like I suspected my brain and eyeballs started to hurt after a while. And I definitely had a headache after it was over.
I'll do a real review in my blog later. 5~6/10

So you main problem with the movie is that it was longer than 2 hours...

A lot of people hating because they want to be cool and controversial in the thread, either that or you have trash taste. I give the movie an 8, I consider it on the same level (better in the technical way) than Wall-E. I fucking love wall-E too. Seriously if you don't at least like this movie than you don't have eyes.
This reminds me of whenever a hot pic of girl gets posted in any thread on any forum there's always a couple people like "shes not that hot", or nit-picking on one detail.
Ehh I have multiple posts in this thread..I just dislike it when people go into a movie wanting to hate it. Or who like it then bash it because it was hyped so much and they expected a new religion from it..it's called marketing.

You are an idiot. That is literally a huge part of the plot. He is promised the surgery that would repair his condition for the intel he is giving on the aliens. He talks about how he cannot afford the surgery on his "grunt" salary/benefits. This was literally mentioned/discussed and an active part of the plot for a huge portion of the movie.
You are a terrible terrible terrible movie goer.

Oh also redbull doesnt make you fly.
edit: Inc your post about being able to watch for 10+ hours was exactly the way I describe it, if they had more content I would just watch...breaks for eating and going to the bathroom. at least all day. Also for people wanting more content/intricate plot give the director 1.5 B$ so he can make a longer movie or a slower paced plot with more sequels.

Wow, didn't know a post in this thread was grounds for attacks. I said I will do a more in depth review in my blog later. And YES, the main problem with the movie was that it's too fucking long. This is a terrible terrible trend as of late. And the sad thing is that people think long = better because they pay 10-30$ for tickets these days. It all started with fucking Titanic. They were like "oh shit!, This movie made mass profits, it must be because of the length. Let's keep making high budget movies super long."
With how standard and basic this movie is, It could have easily chopped huge sections of the film.
Long =! Epic.
