Some minor things that bothered me a little were the 6 legs on basically all the animals on Pandora, the little orange, helicopter lizard thing (it travels by spinning around what) and the fact that every single plant lit up when someone stepped on it. How are they supposed to be stealthy if all the plants glow? >_>

Avatar was a 1995 script with little or no variation probably because James Cameron wanted to honour all the science fiction books he read as a child. That's my guess. I'm definitely hoping for a less predictable sequel.

Loved almost every aspect of this film. Would recommend it to almost everybody. Weta certainly outdid themselves yet again.

The story is terrible. Just because there are no truly new ideas, does not mean old ideas can't be represented in an interesting way. Avatar doesn't do this, instead it's clichéd, one dimensional and predictable. The nature vs technology narrative with one of the invaders helping the natives has been done to death. To make things worse, in this case, there was no subtlety - it was just 'tech=bad, nature=good, which is horribly simplistic and boring to watch play out. The main character was ok, if hampered by endless terrible lines. The navi (sp?) characters were not, they were all deeply clichéd, if not slightly racist (essentially copying elements of African/red Indian culture to represent being in touch with nature, complete with cloying Lion Kingesque soundtrack). I'd go on, but I think the dialogue/storytelling/music/lack of originality/ludicrous length speak for themselves. On the plus side 3D was cool, and parts of the film were visually stunning, particularly in the first half which managed to have some moments of wonder, so I'd say it's worth seeing for that, but you'd be advised to leave about half way through. Also bear in mind that 3D seems imperfect if you are not in the middle of the cinema, which is kind of shit.

My question remains : Why do you have to judge every movie by the same standards? If you can enjoy something - why not do it? It's almost impossible not to fall in love with Pandora, and yet somehow it seems like half the people on this website can't bear the thought that the dialogue wasn't sharp and everyone in the movie wasn't an intellectual. I'm not going to post in this thread anymore, people are going to be repeating the same shit over and over - but wtf.

What are you supposed to use? Pre-colonial European and the Goths? In many aspects, you aren't even SURE if it's exactly replicated from African culture because Native American culture is also alluded to. Aren't Native Americans the ones who believed in giving back to nature and respecting all life? And aren't the names a bit of a give away? Navi .... Native? It's not all black and white, and I think that Cameron did an excellent job trying to bring the Navi culture to life. I think that when atrocities were committed on them, you felt it because they were portrayed as this innocent group that have done nothing but to preserve life whenever they can. I agree that the main character was weak at times, but overall, it was a very symbolic change through the movie that he was feeling less in tuned with his human side (the immoral, technological aspect) and more in tuned with a natural feeling. It sort of brings back Call of the Wild, where Buck, the main domesticated breed, becomes released in the wild and relearns how to adapt to a natural environment. That is something I can definitely repsect. On the topic of Nature vs. Technology, I didn't think that it was horribly overdone. I got the message that the entire conflict revolved around badass machinery vs. naturalistic spirits, but I wasn't phased by it all. I was completely content because the conflict was very well established. It really resembled the conflict that happened between American colonists and the indigenous Native Americans, and how they put up tremendous struggles to stay alive and resist integration into whit society. That subtle allusion was beautifully included into the film and it added a whole new level to emotional feeling that I experienced. My ONLY concern about the movie was the business motives. What the fuck is Unobtainium, and what value does it play? Sure scientists might get its intrinsic value, but I had no idea why such a black substance that looked like a cut out piece of lead was so valuable. I mean the very word makes it feel like it's "Unobtainable". Urgh...there was really no motive because the value of this supposed "200 million dollar" substance was never properly addressed. ANYWAY, other than that, the score for the music was beautiful (the guy who made the music from Apollo 13 and Glory, forgot any others...Titanic?), and it really made me tear up when it was coupled with those majestic visuals that just blew me away. Like...how many people can actually make something that beautiful and then write music that makes it even more epic? Yeah....good stuff.

The dialogue was uninspired. The CG was great. The music was great. I was tired when watching it so I actually closed my eyes and listened to the movie for long stretches without visual cues. As for the division between Nature and Technology, it was more of the juxtaposition of Guardians and Despoilers. It just so happens that all the heavy machinery, the large bulldozers and gunships, are symbols of destruction. It was one dimensional in this manner.

The only reason I stat through to the end was because I was trying to spot as many blue boobs as possible. I hope the sequel involves an all-out war against Earth. That will redeem the movie(s).

The climatic cavalry rides to the rescue was pure BS. Facepalm for that moment of the movie. It would, however, be interesting to know if the world was sentient and if the priceless rock deposits had anything to do that. The movie is defined by its eye candy and its superior rendering of a foreign planet. Low gravity for the humans didn't look so well. People just walked like normal.
