...the first thing they said after the movie was done: "WELL??? WAS IT DISAPPOINTING OR 5/5 STARS?!!". I told them I really, really, did enjoy it and I thought it was definitely a must-see movie, but also that it wasn't a perfect movie and that people who do generally not enjoy these type of movies will find it just another superficial movie (but one with a lot of pretty & awesome special effects). Scanning through this thread I do agree that some people are trying to be 'cool and controversial' by throwing hate.. but really though, after I had seen the movie I was thinking about what I had just seen: It really did reminded my of Pocahontas as well, and like I said earlier in this thread.. the plot was sorta cliche/superficial, character development wasn't that indepth, etc. But nevertheless I do think it was an awesome movie. I'm a big fan of fantasy stuff, I loved the CG, I even like disney ![]() This movie really is on my must-see list and I hope it set a new standard for future movies, however I am also a critic. I don't think a movie necessarily needs to be original to be a good movie. It can be cliche, but for this one I really felt they could've gone more in depth in certain areas. Also I really did think there should've been more character development. And they shouldn't have put these silly things in such as + Show Spoiler + sending the humans back home so they can come back with a massive destructive force, having a crazy/dumb general and some loser/dumb business-type guy ruling over the destiny of an entire human colony.. Then there hardly was any history on how they all came to be there.. What's the unobtainable material good for? Since we already have such advanced technologies going on I would suspect that human society would rather be a scientific one than an aggressive/conquering one, etc, etc. But what could be done to this movie to improve it? Some better dialogues could've helped a little I guess, but the movie almost lasted 3 hours already. Was there really a lot of room to improve this movie and to elaborate more on parts that were left out for our own imagination? Perhaps these flaws are just bound to its hero/adventure genre. Good character development is usually shown in suspense movies, which usually are really slow. I have yet to see a fantasy/adventure/hero movie which actually has a tight story/good history etc. The best and only one I can think of is Lord of the Rings, but I am very familiar with the books so in general that movie just fell into place. Next to that Avatar is a stand-alone movie, while LotR had a 3 in 1 thing going on. So basically I think I have to come to the conclusion that Avatar, for its kind and genre, is worth a 9/10 - Highly enjoyable, and if there were things I 'missed' in this movie, it's my fault for going to see this one instead of seeing a different type of movie. Do you guys (dis)agree on that? And if you think the movie actually was crappy, how do you think the movie could be better for you and do you actually know of a movie that leaves nothing to criticize at all? edit: holy crap, didn't know it was ending up being such a long post >.< edit2: fixed up a couple things.

There were a few things that made the movie less then perfect for me. Some of the lines, mostly from the human military, made me cringe or laugh at awkward moments. The music often didn't feel like it fit in with the environment all that well. During the last battle scenes it was actually really annoying.

I felt like the story was an insult to my inteligence and just coul'nt get into it because of all the cliche's and nonsense that they try to make you believe. 1/5 storyline 5/5 special effects... just another holywood movie, nothing revolutionary here, and I prolly wont even be thinking about this movie in an hour from now.

Wrong. This technology will change cinema. Speilburg (sp) is already working on a movie with the same 3d tech. Anyone who has seen it can attest to how utterly boring 2d is after seeing this. Years from now all movies will be some off-shoot of this (hopefully with more comfortable glasses, or perhaps so advanced you no longer need the glasses).

Maybe in your own little imaginary wolrd this is how the future will be but the reality of things is that most "good" movies theese days are made with a low budget and dont need the high tech that you seem to think will make a revolution.

The visuals, however, were simply incredible. It felt like a children's movie with really good graphics and a bit more violence. Iunno, not too special to me.

My jaw would drop at your ignorance if this weren't the internet. How you can so completely miss the point is.. stunning.

Haha, you lost all credibility right there. movies like this are becoming very important, wall-E, Up, these kinds of visual movies are rising like crazy, all the future animators in my school are throwing parties every day. Avatar already has 2 sequels making and EVERYBODY is hopping on the money train, like they always do. You can't just ignore a boom like this as a decent business man, movies like this with any decent director, are very very stable money making machines. Whens the last time you've seen a high budget animated film sell badly..even Madagascar sold well and it was rancid.

Let me tell you why this movie is so good. It's not the acting (there really isn't anything special there). It's not the story; the story has been done a thousand times before, in just as many ways. The reason is the world of Pandora. James Cameron really brings this world to life (especially if you're watching in 3D). The animals, the lush vegetation, the Navi race, they are all invested with great care & detail. You are really immersed in Pandora when you watch Avatar. Oh, and the graphics are flat-out amazing. When you see a character's avatar, you actually know who the corresponding human is, because the human features of the Avatars' faces are that good.

Did anyone else want Jake Sully to stick his ponytail in the alien girl's ass during the sex scene? I found it weird that he'd stick his ponytail in everything else, but not his gf's tang. Still, I enjoyed it :D. The flying monsters and the rhino things were the best hahah
