Going to try and see it a 2nd time tonight, hopefully it won't be very crowded though I'm sure it will.

Avatar is a remake of Disney's Pocahontas. Watch both movies if you don't believe me

Well not exactly cuz of avatar, but because of the audience. Many people (especially these days) have great home cinema stations with extremely large TVs and decent surround sound effects, so often there is no reason to leave your home to watch a movie you like unless
1) The special effects are AWESOME MUST SEE
OR
2) it's 3d

Basically avatar has both, so it's an even more must see in the theater, but I can easily see why from now on pretty much every movie will be with 3d effects.
I believe!

My expects for this movie were
Story - shit
Visuals - imndblowing

My expectations were exceeded in both ways. The story wasnt great but it wasnt bad. It was standard. But the visuals...my god. Just oh my god.

I think the great thing about Avatar is how simple it is.
But it tells a different story.

Avatar has almost the same story as Pocahontas, but its different at the same time.
Avatar is much more historical and calls for WWI (the mask), WWII (the tanks/mechs), Vietnam (the helicopters), Iraq ("Shock and Awe", "Pre-emptive attack")...and well pre-WWI wars (with the Na'vi representing pre-WWI.

In that sense, its deeper because its not about Iraq or any single war, but how we are as humans.
and shit, it goes beyond wars and countries. It talks about us and that if we don't wise up, nature is going to fuck up. And its not even global warming, but just the fact that we are using 110 (most conservative estimation)-160% (most aggressive estimation) more resources than nature can replenish.

So its very simple as a story, but touches on a universal theme.

The contrast between Pandora's vibrant forests and the cold, gray human facilities was interesting. When Jake was comparing his life as Na'vi and his time in his own body, and discussing how he wasn't sure what was real anymore, I was reminded of Philip K. Dick's works
That wasn't any act of God. That was an act of pure human fuckery.

Excellent movie.
Just saw it and was not really awed by the graphics/visuals but it's a real fun, exciting movie to watch.

Just came back watching Avatar as well.
The story was better than expected, not as "bad" as most say it is, although there were some cheesy parts that makes my face go "-_-". Overall story was still entertaining.
Graphic wise, this movie is just on top of everything else out there right now.
Would definitely recommend this movie to anyone.

I'm sorry, this movie is awful. After the first half hour of army cliches and one liners it played out like pocahontas/fern gully + the matrix + lord of the rings + starship troopers, in that order.
The science makes no sense, the story is linear and predictable and beats you over the head with themes of 'technology BAD nature GOOD' / america in iraq lol.

If you've played FF10 you've seen the forest in the movie. Alternatively, if you've taken hallucinogens and gone for a walk in the woods you've seen and experienced the forest in this movie.

If someone used 300 million to make a kids movie, this would be it.

Someone did use 300 million to make a kid's movie, and now it's going to make 1 billion.

1billion easy, I think it's a quarter way there already.

I think this is one of the few movies where every plants/mechanics/science are made sure to based on actual science or at worse, science theories.

But anyway, I don't see how anyone sees it as just "America in Iraq". There were clear Canadian criticisms- somehow its funny how none of the Canadian newspapers took a hint in it

How is it about American in Iraq dammit.
A more technologically advanced civilization making contact with, taking advantage of, and exploiting another is as ancient as anything. Wow at the American narcissism .
