I felt like the story was an insult to my inteligence and just coul'nt get into it because of all the cliche's and nonsense that they try to make you believe.
1/5 storyline 5/5 special effects... just another holywood movie, nothing revolutionary here, and I prolly wont even be thinking about this movie in an hour from now. Wrong. This technology will change cinema. Speilburg (sp) is already working on a movie with the same 3d tech. Anyone who has seen it can attest to how utterly boring 2d is after seeing this. Years from now all movies will be some off-shoot of this (hopefully with more comfortable glasses, or perhaps so advanced you no longer need the glasses). Maybe in your own little imaginary wolrd this is how the future will be but the reality of things is that most "good" movies theese days are made with a low budget and dont need the high tech that you seem to think will make a revolution.
Yes, because nothing changes in this world or progresses. The route for progression in the realm of cinema is obviously 3d (most likely on the path to some sort of VR). I didn't say it would happen tommorow or even next year (especially since it's so expensive atm), but to say people won't shift from story to story + immersiveness, as the tech becomes more available and easy to implement, is foolish.

drove a couple hr. and saw it in imax 3D, definitely worth the trip. the most visually immersive movie i've ever seen. there was a predictability to the story, but that did not hurt the movie - i felt like i knew where it was going at times but getting there was really fun :D
cameron did an awesome job, wish i could go see it again without the looong drive
9/10

Agree here...one of my managers and me at the movie theatre were actually talking about plot lines..and he said something very interesting, if you REALLY think about it..there are only 5 ideas so to speak for each plot movie, so obviously you aren't gunna have any original ideas at all for movies, you are just going to have very many variations of movies, and if you can get past that and just go watch the movie for what it is..it's going to be that much better, so people who are being picky on the plot and everything need to go look at every other movie and think about that plot -_-

What are you supposed to use? Pre-colonial European and the Goths? In many aspects, you aren't even SURE if it's exactly replicated from African culture because Native American culture is also alluded to. Aren't Native Americans the ones who believed in giving back to nature and respecting all life?
And aren't the names a bit of a give away? Navi .... Native? It's not all black and white, and I think that Cameron did an excellent job trying to bring the Navi culture to life. I think that when atrocities were committed on them, you felt it because they were portrayed as this innocent group that have done nothing but to preserve life whenever they can.
I agree that the main character was weak at times, but overall, it was a very symbolic change through the movie that he was feeling less in tuned with his human side (the immoral, technological aspect) and more in tuned with a natural feeling. It sort of brings back Call of the Wild, where Buck, the main domesticated breed, becomes released in the wild and relearns how to adapt to a natural environment. That is something I can definitely repsect.
On the topic of Nature vs. Technology, I didn't think that it was horribly overdone. I got the message that the entire conflict revolved around badass machinery vs. naturalistic spirits, but I wasn't phased by it all. I was completely content because the conflict was very well established. It really resembled the conflict that happened between American colonists and the indigenous Native Americans, and how they put up tremendous struggles to stay alive and resist integration into whit society. That subtle allusion was beautifully included into the film and it added a whole new level to emotional feeling that I experienced.
My ONLY concern about the movie was the business motives. What the fuck is Unobtainium, and what value does it play? Sure scientists might get its intrinsic value, but I had no idea why such a black substance that looked like a cut out piece of lead was so valuable. I mean the very word makes it feel like it's "Unobtainable". Urgh...there was really no motive because the value of this supposed "200 million dollar" substance was never properly addressed.
ANYWAY, other than that, the score for the music was beautiful (the guy who made the music from Apollo 13 and Glory, forgot any others...Titanic?), and it really made me tear up when it was coupled with those majestic visuals that just blew me away. Like...how many people can actually make something that beautiful and then write music that makes it even more epic?
Yeah....good stuff.
Didn't you know??! The Unobtainuim is actually another word for Adamantium... the rock that fell from the sky in X-Man Origins: Wolverine came from Pandora. Obviously the humans have some kinda Wolverine fetish and want to reproduce and army with indestructiblie skeletons. And then.... send the new soliders to fly into space like a swarm of locus to slice up Galatica sitting on his godly throne. -___-

Yep. If you want to be entertained by plot, go read a good fantasy or SF novel. That's not what movies are for. You can't really fit a lot of great plot into 2 hrs.

I did not see this in 3d, and I still found it absolutely amazing... and I thought that they did a hell of a lot with the plot in the movie, especially considering that they can't do a whole lot with it in that amount of time. Amazing movie, great graphics, totally worth the experience... now to see it in 3D :D.

Amazing movie, really worth the money. Don't over look the plot, or don't try and find errors just let yourself go and watch the whole world James Cameron is showing. Brilliant just wow ! I love the way they explained that the forest has links, synapse which by the way is not all false, science actually think that humans memory storage works with millions of synapse linked which in the end create memory storage.
Avatar is worth your money!

Best thing about their 3D is that Avatar used it conservatively. Hoping that 3D can even be stretched out to the limit!

overhyped ?...

I had seen a few trailers for this movie and thought, hmmmm looks interesting but wasn't really amazed by it.
BUT I went with my wife and her best friend and the best friends boyfriend and saw the 3d version.
I really didn't know too much about the movies plot but that it was suppose to be in 3d (first time seeing something in 3d).
Immediately the graphics sucked me in and so did the story.I didn't go in trying to find faults or anything, I just wanted to enjoy whatever movie I'm watching and this movie did so.
I recommend people see the 3d version!
I can't wait for the sequels

not to mention that by the time they get on board technology would have moved that little bit futher and will make 3D cheaper

I am interested on what George Lucas will do seeing as how it was reported that if Avatar proved to be a success that Lucas said he would consider making the Star War films in 3D!

I've seen this movie twice now, both times in IMAX 3D. I simply love it and would see it again if the opportunity arose.
To those who are picking on the plot, i actually think the plot was exactly what it needed to be. Not super complicated, not super simplistic either -- if you look at the overarching themes they're actually quite powerful ( technology vs spirituality, destruction of earth's natural resources, demonization of indigenous people to justify their deaths )
We have seen and done all of these things in the very recent history of mankind. They are quite powerful themes, and sure we've seen them before, but that doesnt make them any less powerful. I think the movie pulls it off very well. It weaves together all the themes and takes you along for an incredible journey.
This movie is easily the best movie I've seen since LOTR, and it is a standalone movie. I think it has the perfect amount of dialog/plot for an action flick.

One of the best movies i've seen in a long while. I'm really hard to please when it comes to movies, but I think i'm going to go see this one again on IMAX. (which will be a first ever for me).
Everything was just so believable. The motives of all the characters, the action scenes, the themes, the fantastic environment. Even my grandmother, who is almost 80 and saw it separately, came away absolutely raving about it.
Not trying to suggest it was without fault, or some sort of American Beauty or Twelve Angry Men... but damn. What a fine movie, enjoyed every minute of it.
