i liked it, sometime during the early parts you forget its CGI and get sucked in pretty good
yes its cliched, predictable, etc, but still enjoyable. movie made you really feel for the characters, and thats difficult when they are fully animated trying to look real (different than like a disney character that doesnt intend to be real).
visuals, very good, story, not very original, but overall experience was well worth it

Are people just being anti-Avatar because this movie was hyped? I really can't see a reason you wouldn't like watching this film unless you absolutely hate fantasy in which case I wouldn't recommend movies to you anyway. I don't get it.
Let me try to put it this way - There are dozens of people I've spoken to who would rather live on Pandora than Earth. They just mention this in the first 5 minutes of talking about the movie. You might be like, "Of course they do, it's different." Do you know how hard it is to create something that feels sustainable, alive, and more important - REAL? This movie sucks you in hardcore to the world.
The story was just a commentary on society, but you can tell Cameron wrote this story thinking of how people "should be" versus how they are. It's like he was screaming - "STOP - look at the world around you.. you don't understand it.. stop destroying it."
The unobtainium was obviously on purpose. Cameron commenting on how we're always striving for something we can't have and also making parallels to every war ever.
I agree that the characters were cliche, but come on - if that is the worst thing you can say about a movie then you're stretching to find faults. I was smiling when good things happened to Jake and it didn't make be burst into tears when the tree died, but I was pretty sad about it. I cheered when Tsu'tek sliced the fuck out of the guys on the giant star destroyer chopper.
Edit: I gotta say I thought this movie could have been 20-30 minutes longer. It felt like there was much more background to explore with the Nav'i and the final fight seemed a little rushed with all the stories to close up. I'm hoping the trilogy doesn't take 10 years to come out.
This was a 10/10 movie for me, people need to let go and just enjoy it.. you gotta skate.

How is it stretching to find faults? Isnt predicatabiliy, cliche characters and shit dialogue enough? Its like saying some1 who doesnt like a car because the engine sucks is "stretching to find faults". Not a whole lot of stretching was required. And again, I still think the movie is worth watching, I'm just a bit puzzled how people can overlook the faults, altho in the end all the more power to them because if it makes them enjoy the movie more then there's nothing wrong with it.

Fzero, you got a couple of good points there..but I also agree with the naysayers. I don't like the way you know how it's going to end, and also the way the movie caters to too big of an audience by putting a little bit of everything in. But that's logical too with big budget movies, ofc.
Also, can hype influence your rating of a movie? Technically, you should just rate the movie quality by itself, but I know it matters a great deal. If a movie promises everything (and I believe it) and delivers barely that, it still feels like a 7/10. It's like watching Pavarotti vs. Paul Potts, the latter caused much more of a stir..

Why do you HAVE to be thrown for a loop? If every story you ever read is only good based on surprise, then isn't surprise no longer a surprise? If you're watching a horror film, are you really scared when some shit jumps into frame? It's supposed to "surprise" you but you know its coming from the visual cues, the melodrama, the audio track.
Sometimes you can just accept the story for being a platform to deliver something beautiful.
As for shit dialogue, I didn't really cringe much at all in this movie. I thought the general dude was a direct play off Apocolypse Now's "I love the smell of napalm in the morning".
They explained the "I see you" stuff in the movie - it fits with the theme of the Nav'i. If you don't like it because you wouldn't say it.. well, I don't know what to say to that.
I'm not saying there was NOTHING wrong with the movie, but 7/10? Honestly, I can't think of more than 5 other movies that I enjoyed more than this one for the sheer scale, beauty, and setting of the film. If you're comparing the movie to Dune - shit, Dune is in my top 5 fantasy series. I'll take that.

Personally I'm not a fan of horror movies either in a storytelling sense: the only reason i'd go would be cheap thrills. This movie undoubtebly does more then just cheap thrills, but I'd like to think the storyline here is supposed to do a bit more then just be a very thin thread, and as such it fails to deliver. Even in horror movies you are occasionally surprised by certain events in the story, while here it was pretty easy to come up with the entire comming storyline and every event in it somewhere in the first half of the movie. I guess the thing about the dialogue is just about taste so lets not argue about that. I am saying the visuals make up for a whole lot, but in my opinion, not enough to make this "one of the best movies ever", merely "the best visual movie ever". Still not bad.

I cried. I saw it in 2d and still I acknowledge its awesomeness. I know when I see it in 3d I will weep again in joy.

You do realize that pretty much every single author in every single genre borrows elements from pretty much every other author/director before them? In almost every single novel or movie, the basic story framework is probably the same one you've seen a million times but with some variable changes

Looked fantastic in 2D. The storyline was painfully predictable and cliche, but the visuals make up for that so well. I can't wait to see it in 3D!

DO IT. I had 3 large bowls of pineapple express RIGHT before going to see it, literally one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. I was slackjawed throughout, very nearly weeping at the beauty a few times.
Honestly, I'm not sure I can watch normal movies anymore. It was so pretty, and the 3d had me actually feeling the plants and stuff. Normal movies seem so.... bland, now.

Am I the only one that was hoping those Naa'vi flying crap would stack and attack like mutas till the end?

A great visual experience and I'm really looking forward to more of this in the future. I was sceptical about the 3d stuff, but yeah, it's great and the at times the CGI was just mindblowing.
Unfortunately everything else about the movie totally sucked. But it was still worth the experience. 6/10 That Duke Nukem guy was hilarious :D

I think the people who find the characters unoriginal are uncreative need everything spoon-fed to them.
Or just high expectations, I don't know. -_-

I mean how do you stop a Terran push without flanking. Went and braved the snow yesterday to see it w/ friends and I definitely thought it was worth it. You HAVE TO see it in 3D though. HAVE TO. One of the best movies I've ever seen.

Hawk speaks truth. I actually hate people who criticize for the story line saying "oh it's been done before". Every idea in every movie we've seen has been done before many times. There are no original ideas anymore, and people just need to accept that fact and enjoy the movie for what it is...it'll be that much better if you do.

How, exactly is having a disabled person as the lead role in a Hollywood blockbuster anything remotely close to unoriginal or uncreative?
This movie was balls to the wall incredible. I'm going to see it like 3 times before its out of theaters.

I saw it last night. True, its predictable, but had some decent little twists in it. But overall 9.5 out of 10 easy. I mean, I was blown away with how real it felt watching it. Even all the neon stuff at night was uber cool, I realized I wasnt blinking and my eyes were wide open. Hey, even the alien chick was hot and I would def hit that.

Pretty sure it's been done before, and i'm not denying the movie wasn't amazing, it was. I actually plan on watching it again tonight and thursday with some buddies ^^.
