I think what Sentenal is saying is that the only fan media (or in some folks' cases, the only thing at all) that people see of Gridman are pictures of Rikka's ass, which gives them the wrong impression of the show. Whether you think that's a problem or not is up to you.

Sixteen year olds talking like they're sixteen?! That's shocking. Either way though, the two main characters in this show act more mature than your average high schooler. But if you're watching anime about high schoolers and then getting annoyed by the fact that they act like average high schoolers, I don't know what to tell you.
Koga, the girl introduced in this new arc, is immature, short-sighted, self-serving, etc. which can lead to frustration, but given that she's a female first year high school student, I think it's understandable that she acts this way.
Also I too miss the days when anime was less commercial and Gundam came out with new enemy mobile suits every two episodes in an effort to sell more toys.

But if you're watching anime about high schoolers and then getting annoyed by the fact that they act like average high schoolers, I don't know what to tell you. Well, in my defense, I stopped watching because I thought it was bad.
And I don't think it's the fact that they talk like high schoolers. I think the fact that they act like snobby high schoolers with muh intelligent persona is bad. I don't really care about how silly characters act in something like Kimi ni Todoke because there's no presumption that these characters are something more than they are. On the other hand, I just look at that scientist chick who spends half her time staring at a test tube while talking about schrodingers cat. Ooooh so detached, so smart.
So many writers think they can make mature/intelligent chidlren, be they high schoolers or othrewise, and don't realize they're writing boring people who essentially come off as the perverted ego of the writer.
This isn't just this show by the way. I think this show, Hyouka, Oregairu, and random shit like Classroom of the Elite all suffer from the same problems. They're just all so fucking boring but you have a bunch of 5smart3deep charas that give people the impression that there's something beneath the veneer of mediocrity

And they still do this today on top of anime essentially being cannon fodder for LN shilling

eh, I'd disagree with you on OreGairu on that particular thing ZNF. I think OreGairu in particular is very much about showing how for example Hachiman thinks of himself as very smart and perhaps even is slightly smarter than the average highschooler (at best), but gets constantly owned and being put in his place by sensei etc. The series imo is very much about showing that Hachiman isn't as smart as he himself thinks he is.
|
I stopped watching it. It was boring. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I will admit personally I dislike most shows that posture around the >muh chara is so smart and vice versa in the >but actually he's retarded. I guess it sounds a bit strange considering I thought DN/CG were fun shows, but I will contest that I didn't like those shows because I thought galaxy brain 20d chess moves were being made.
also mfw I get banned from irc. i blame my chinese proxy at work lomo

I'm with ZNF. It's just a subgenre of anime. OreGairu was pretty bad at this and Hachiman was the author/audience self insert 5smart3deep character. If you enjoy it that's fine. I liked the first season to an extent.

I think this season is ok overall. Could be better, could be worse. I'm watching the following new anime:
Golden Kamuy: this second season has been great so far. It retained everything from the first season. I died laughing in the first episode (or was it second). The way things are moving along as well, and we're getting more information. I can see the anime potentially finishing this season if its 24 episodes (no clue if it is). Run with wind: seem ok so far, don't mind the characters. Just one of those relaxing anime for me. Slime anime: sure, sure, his powers are extremely OP.+ Show Spoiler + I mean, we all watched the first episode lol, but I don't mind OP characters personally. Ideally, him starting from the bottom and making it to the top as a regular slime would've been cool, but whatever. Still a fun anime overall, good OP. SAO: it may have a bad rep overall, but I'm enjoying Alicization so far. + Show Spoiler +I only hope that it would move faster. The anime in a way slightly downplayed Kirito's OPness what with him almost dying against that ogre, even if in the end, he killed him. I'm not sure what else to expect moving forward, but it's SAO and I kinda have an idea of what to expect. Has a nice OP too. Goblin Slayer: this was a surprising one. I wasn't sure I would like it, but it's grown on me. + Show Spoiler +The gore is fine, and I do like the bonding that is taking place with the new party. Granted, killing Goblins will eventually become boring to watch (if it's always the same method), but I'm most interested in seeing how the show opens up the MCs, getting more background information, and in general, just seeing how things proceed. Boarding School Juliet: apparently, the manga is bad, but the anime seems ok so far. Maybe we'll get an anime original ending. Not the greatest anime, just an ok watch so far. Radiant: Somewhat of a meh anime. MC is too full of himself, reminds me of a subpar Naruto. Not sure I like the new characters either. Guess I'll have to wait some more to see if this gets better, or if I drop it.

As a way of mental protection I guess

So he's an asocial loner who isn't smart with an ego problem that has the most beautiful women at school all engaged in some weird after school activities that inevitably leads to heart break. Come now Toad. I told you I liked the season I watched. The show falls in same boat as the Gataris. It's all unrealistic witty dialogue that's far too smart for the people saying it. Just because one you liked and one you didn't doesn't mean you need to justify it with some odd excuses.
If it was about what you said. He'd just be a loner with no friends like a million other kids who think they the hot shit while having mediocre looks and social skills.

If it was about what you said. He'd just be a loner with no friends like a million other kids who think they the hot shit while having mediocre looks and social skills. but that's not what you or ZNF argued. You're point was that he's supposedly a 5smart3deep character. Had you said it's unrealistic because it's on the haremish side while MC is plenty anti-social and it makes no sense for him to be loaded with girls all falling for him I wouldn't have disagreed with your or ZNF. But that wasn't your point, you just said that for the first time.
I agree, Senjou and a lot of Monogatari characters are Nishioishin putting words into their mouth, making characters the way he wants them to be even though it's incredibly unreasonable to expect people like that, just in the same way that I perceive bunnygirl author to be doing that. Nishioishin is def on the spectrum of jerking off his own ego into these characters but I do think it works exactly because he's good at writing and makes it work and I acknowledged that from the beginning.
I don't however think the same specific thing is true for OreGairu characters. The series has it's downsides like you said, but it's not that Hachiman is portrayed as some genius who's basicly another magic jesus who can solve everything with a flick of his finger.
I would put those two works into two different categories if I had to compare them on this merit. And they shine for different reasons. Yes, they both end up being harems with the MC loaded with girls but that wasn't discussed nor related to anything I said. I would however agree that yes, they're both harems if that's what you're trying to get out of me. I don't think that's particularly good or bad though and it wasn't what I criticized bunnygirl for.
//edit: In essence, I criticized bunnygirl for somewhat having the same issues as Nishioishin has. But at the same time just not having the remarkable writing skills to make up for that and get me to read/listen to his stuff. I do acknowledge that that can be just personal preference btw.

Gridman is way better than all those shows, though
|
So I'm not sure if it came up back during the original air date, but Netflix just slid the last 3 episodes of Last Encore up, and boy howdy do these episodes show there are some properties you should never give to Shaft. Chock full of "mysterious" dialogue that appeared to be run through Google translate for the licensed subs, random lighting shifts, and head tilts. Oh, the head tilts.
Just, yikes. The final three episodes were almost trainwreck-watch worthy, at least to me, but otherwise I don't think even diehard Fate fans are likely to get much out of this. Maybe if I had watched them right after the first 10 (which I remembered being at least tolerable, if a bit confusing) I would have gotten more out of them.
(At times I got the probably false sense that 'Rin's' character was pasted in during the anime equivalent of reshoots of an ending someone disliked, too, which is never a good sign)

I like Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru (the one about 10 guys running the Ekiden). If you like sports anime you should go for it. Very classic sports drama tropes, but that's what makes it good .

Last encore only has value if you have played through both fate extra and fate extra ccc

I watched the first 7 episodes of Fate/Extra Last Encore and then gave up becuase 7 episodes in I still have no idea what was happening and everything is all "mysterious". It all just seemed so pointless. The colosseum animation for the opener looks nice is probably the only praise I can give it.

Gridman is decent, but it's kind of a time waster for me. I was never particularly into toku though. I like the SoL bits because it reminds me of Dededede, complete with the normal everyday life in a clearly abnormal backdrop. The main characters are kinda boring (Vote Calibur for MC). Akane in particular sucks. The reset mechanics are awfully convenient but whatever. Mostly I just hate it when they use it for drama, because it feels awfully trite.

And they're all college students. Truly a rarity.

First, the studio seemed to care about it (for s1, at least). It was evident in miscellaneous throwaway details stuff like Hachiman's desk placement (not in the traditional MC spot) to deliberate shots of body language. And it was often subtle body language, which doesn't happen often. In the end, it was all teenage drama, but I liked that they actually put some effort into it.
Second, the self-destructive solutions were pretty entertaining. 20D chess that relies on beating the shit out of yourself for various reasons.
They almost had something going with the whole honesty thing but all the Yukino drama stuff ruined it. Girlish Number then proceeded to kill any faith I had left in Wataru as a writer.

It's not all bad news though - the manga dragged its heels a lot on some of these arcs. In any case, they could screw up royally and I'd still watch it because the subject's unique enough.
Slime is whatever. Cute presentation, but that's it for me.
SAO is pretty average. I'd rather it stay slow rather than fall into the trap of s1 all over again.
So yeah, I don't disagree. Meh season.
|
Don't worry, SAO will stay slow for like half its run, and then it turns into a worse version of Bleach with even more asspulls. Look forward to it!

Yeah my expectations are pretty low, so no need to worry about that~

Writing that kind of story is pretty hard. I think what authors fail to realize is that the "smart plot" stuff isn't really that important. The key component is having characters that are enjoyable as their own and enjoyable in their interactions with others. Monogatari loves sucking itself off but what it does great is having characters you enjoy. All the characters have their own different interactions with each other. Senjou may mess around with Araragi all the time but she's super frail and caring with Hanekawa. The overall plot matters less than the characters themselves. The plot serves more as a vehicle for the characters to interact.
Too often I find anime and well media in general focuses too heavy on plot instead of characters. It's all well and good having an interesting plot but if the characters suck then the story won't be enjoyable. Hachiman and co kind of suffer at least in S1 for me where the characters weren't strong enough to really carry the story. Instead it kept trying to do some "deep" plot and brought in drama for no real reason.
I'm not saying plot is bad. I love a good well written story. I just think it's important to flesh out characters first. Star Trek Discovery failed at this so hard where they just have garbage characters rushing into some form of narrative to try get the audience. Compare that to Deep Space Nine that painstakingly develops characters before even a whiff of overarching narrative comes.
edit: Yes I did just want to rant about Star Trek. Leave me alone :<
