If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

im pretty ok with it, and it's one of few that i haven't dropped yet but based on the MAL discussion, i do spose that they could've done more in-depth character introduction, couldn't even figure out which guy was supposed to be the MC/spy this episode

I don't get those people always crying for a character introduction. Some of the most useless inventions in story-telling... Characters should be mostly defined by their actions in the story, not by flashbacks. Anyways, I think it's pretty ironic that people cry for that shit even if it's the FUCKING POINT of the show that those spies don't give away their real identity but use tons of fake ones... my god...

That said, I haven't watched ep4 yet. I want to finish Chihayafuru first.

I get what you mean, and I'm not crying for one, my issue is with the fact that the spies were vaguely introduced and all their faces look arguably similar and idk about you but i basically spent a good chunk of the episode watching and wondering who the heck is the spy supposed to be or whether the anime had just decided to do some weird diversion and show another bunch of characters and a new story

Yeah, I wasn't talking about you, just the general MAL crowd. In almost every anime subforum, if the anime did not introduce the characters in ep1, people are crying... As said, I haven't seen ep4 yet so I can't judge. However, people already said this exact thing on ep1, wishing for in-depth character introductions. That made me mad.

yeah well, maybe i phrased it wrongly but i think my point gets across, the other characters should've gotten maybe just 10-15 secs extra screen time each in ep1 and that would honestly have been enough so that imo, viewers could at least remember that there are at least 9 different MCs and how to tell them apart while also knowing their, albeit fake, names.

I think having distinct faces would already help/do enough. What I think would have been cool as well is if they had really distinct faces instead of all looking the same, however when taking another fake identity they would look completely different due to some simple changes (it's incredible how much appearance can change with some simple lines in anime). In the end of the case the spy gets revealed to the viewer in one way or another.

Their individual personalities are not elaborated upon because it's not important to the story. All you need to know is that there is a spy, and they are competent. The only reason there are nine spies is so that the show has a plausible explanation for having each episode take place in a different location.

Good point, I think that settles it.

GitS:SAC is one of those rare, mostly episodic shows where you feel the urge to watch the next episode as soon as possible - not because the story is so tense and compelling but because it's just that good.

Damn you Oe, you are such a boss! In season 1, I thought it was so cute when she was noticing how Taichi felt about Chihaya. But the way she is routing for him and supporting him now...man Oe!

The only thing I'm a bit bitter about is that there is no resolve to the romance. I didn't really expect it but I hoped for it. Damn, need a season 3! Madhouse, pls. For anybody who is reading the manga: Is the romance going to be resolved there? Don't say which pairing, just if it gets resolved.

That whole finals was so insane. Chihaya battling through the pain even knowing it will ruin her chances in the individual tournament. Taichi refusing to give up. Then finally that last scene man. It was like 2 am when I saw it after watching rest of season in a row. Almost broke down in tears. So beautiful. The towel scene with them in an earlier episode was also amazing.

+ Show Spoiler +
Yeah, both scenes were beautiful indeed.

pls the manga's about karuta, not romance...

Thank you very much for not answering the question. It's not like that I don't know that. The show is about so much more than Karuta though.

Romance isn't even listed as a genre for both the manga and anime just saying.

Ah yes the great art of genre listings means more than what is in the content. How can you say there is no romance when a whole character arc is a person learning that he needs to want to achieve his goal for himself and not so the person he loves has a better practice partner. Then you even have the conflicting emotions around a childhood friend due to this or how one titty monster pushes this person to be more open with the girl or how he purposely tries to go on excursions alone with the girl. If you say there's no romance in Chihaya I question if we saw the same story. It's special because it's NOT just about Karuta but about the characters themselves as well as Karuta. How they interact, grow and fight on is what makes it compelling.

Hell we have two corresponding scenes in the show. The first showing Chihaya fall asleep on Taichi's shoulder and the second where he falls asleep on hers on the way home. Two scenes showing how close a bond they have yet one person wants it to be more than that while the other hasn't even thought about it. You people make me sad and mad.

Funny you mention simple disguises, because that is exactly what happens in ep 4.

I really like what they did with the setting this time around. Having Sikh soldiers accompany the British man from the International Settlement was a nice detail. Opium trafficking and male prostitution also feature prominently...

Next ep is supposed to deal with British intelligence/counterintelligence. Should be neat.

+ Show Spoiler +
Just watched the episode and yeah, that's what I meant.^^

There was a lot of intrigue in this one. The whole episode I was confused about the fact that the guy in charge of finding the spy seemingly stumbled into the guy with the glasses immediately. It felt like too much of a coincidence. But in the end it made perfect sense.

Looking forward to the next ep.

What I noticed aside from the content details was the animation. Not only in this show but more and more shows seem to animate large crowds. At times it look really choppy (when the crowd was clapping in the dance hall) but at times it looks fairly good. Not nearly as good or smooth as crowd scenes in Ghibli movies or so but still. In Sakurako-san it looked like CGI when they did it. But here it looks like actual animation. Did they invent a new technique that makes this possible with rather low budget?

I didn't . I still haven't finished it because I didn't like the episodic stuff, but I'll give it that the episodes were not bad... I think I stopped at like ep 10 or so. I totally see someone enjoy Joker Game if he loved GitS:SAC though. But personally I almost fell asleep at episode 4, maybe because I watched 2 episodes of Kore wa Zombie before and I guess I was a little tired too.

And yeah I know you told me there's a story later in GitS:SAC, and I'll probably try to watch it again at some point. I guess taste matters a lot too, if shows are episodic then I prefer them to be funny (example: Sakamoto or Dagashi Kashi), but that doesn't mean I dislike more serious ones. If they have a coherent plot that's exciting I generally like those too (example: Psycho Pass, most of Boku Dake).

There's a vast difference between saying there's no romance in it to saying that Chihaya loves karuta and that's the main focus. There definitely is romance and it is an important part of the story. You can put your stupidity goggles on and claim no romance all you want to blind yourself.

The Election Arc was one of my favourite arcs because there was a ton of dialouge that was so damn good. Was that too much for you or did you still enjoy it because it wasn't episodic?

About the episodic vs coherent plot topic: Today I had a conversation in the uni about this. If you use them in a short time-frame it feels rushed and people would notice. That's what I meant with "rare" in my last post. GitS:SAC manages to make each episode compelling on its own. You don't want to watch the next episode because of tension created in the last episode (by cliffhangers or whatever) but because you know the next episode is gonna be good. If you enjoy that type of entertainment, in this case the characters, interactions etc., that is.

It's funny because I looked up spoilers to the manga and there are important plot developments regarding it unless these spoilers are just making it up. So yea strictly zero romance boys. Do you people just read half a story?

How can you say there is no romance when a whole character arc is a person learning that he needs to want to achieve his goal for himself and not so the person he loves has a better practice partner.

Romance that is about whether the couple will get together or not are the worst. They should be more like S&W, WA2 or Kawakami novels

Episodic shows that aren't SOL kills me too. My main problem with kekkai sensen and joker game.

However, after the 2nd year jingu tournament there is a lot of increased romantic tension. But I would not say that it is very central and intense/plot driving before then. It's just kind of there and you know something is gonna happen EVENTUALLY.

I spoiled myself long ago because I wanted to and don't expect there to ever be more seasons. I just didn't want to say anything for Miragee's sake. Didn't mean to imply I looked it up now or even see how you saw that connection.

Find it hilarious telling someone to chill down after they get annoyed at the complete lack of effort from people saying others are wrong. That as the complete lack of any respect that borders of full on insulting but ye I should really just chill. l o l

Chihayafuru is very very popular, additional seasons (at least 2) are going to happen, the third likely within 2 years since there is plenty of material to adapt.

Episodic, non-SOL of things can be fine. GaoGaiGar is a good example. They do have a requirement of being strung together following an overarching (if slow developing) plot, but that's fine. GaoGaiGar builds on an overarching plot, introduces new concepts, new heroes, etc etc as it goes on, despite most of the episodes being episodic. Its all just a question to how well they fit together, and if the individual episodes are well written and compelling.

Ghost in the Shell is definitly one of the good ones. Finished SAC today and kept me entertained all the way through. I have already seen some of 2nd Gig but will probably start on it soon enough. Then I might watch some of the other movies like Innocence I suppose. I might avoid Arise all together since it seems to be almost universally disliked.

We'll see. There's been plenty of popular stuff that doesn't get adapted. Why isn't there Index S3 for example, surely that should have been in the works already with how popular it is? There's a live action Chihaya but no mention of any additional seasons? Maybe we'll see an announcement but I wouldn't hold my breath. Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei is insanely popular with a lot of material but no sequel yet. Popularity isn't the greatest measure of continued anime production.

Index finished over 5 years ago. Chihaya is a bit more recent with only 3 years and Mahouka being 2 years ago. Believe Index/Mahouka far outstrips Chihaya's popularity but might be wrong.

If you take arise as an action movie it's ok. I enjoyed Innocence a lot but people tend to hate on it. There's also Solid State Society which is a follow on from 2nd gig

Alright, interesting. I thought the Chimera Arc was one of the best arcs. I would rank it second, together with the Election Arc, Phantom Troupe arc would be first. That being said, the Chimera Arc had also some of the weakest parts of the whole show. I was so bored of the damn fights against all the trash villains that I didn't care a dime about. I think in this regard, the Chimera Arc was the most "generic shounen"-like arc. It had some of the best fights though and great themes, conversations and characters.

For the "what happens next": It doesn't increase the quality, it might increase your enjoyment though.

Ghost in the Shell is definitly one of the good ones. Finished SAC today and kept me entertained all the way through. I have already seen some of 2nd Gig but will probably start on it soon enough. If you take arise as an action movie it's ok. I enjoyed Innocence a lot but people tend to hate on it. There's also Solid State Society which is a follow on from 2nd gig

I thought Innocence was ok but definitely not on par with the rest. For my taste, it thrived too much on surreal CGI design to disguise the rather erratic plot.

Any reasons for popular stuff not getting extra material? Seems like kind of a no brainer to me to push out as much content as possible for popular stuff to cash in.
