Although I say I try not to, it's hard to go into a long-standing series (in manga terms, anything with like 75+ chapters) and come out with zero expectations as you continue to follow weekly releases. When you follow something for that long, I think it's rather natural to develop certain expectations from the characters. Not all of them (expectations) are warranted but still. In regards to Nisekoi in particular, it's hard for me to pinpoint what it is about the series that 'irks' me but I guess what it really comes down to is the sensibility (or lack thereof) of certain characters. + Show Spoiler [Onodera] +It's the very reason why a lot of people take Haru over Kosaki, they're literally drawn the same with slight difference in hair style. Haru is just more "normal" while we have Kosaki running around for triple digit chapters as fearful as she was in chapter 1. In that very same vein, it makes a lot of sense to me why Ruri has so many fans despite having a pretty mundane design. Lastly, I think Nisekoi falls to its own popularity. A lot of jp series have bumbling-type charas but somehow Nisekoi is the king at drawing aggro for its lack of "progress". But like I previously stated, it's not so much that there's no progress with Raku's love life but rather all the idiocy that surrounds Raku to prolong his situation of not choosing a girl.
Yeah at least + Show Spoiler [Haru] +actually somewhat made a move towards Raku or not scared of doing so. She doesn't even like go scardy-cat when she went on a date with Raku while + Show Spoiler [Kosaki] +She did drop hints on Raku but whenever there was a chance to clarify that she has feelings for Raku she backs down.

I agree that a weak point is the rather comical extreme that the author goes to keep Raku in the dark. He is a true dumb harem MC. He also is like the male version of Onodera the way he freaks out at every little thing~ Onodera is the frightened rabbit despite having 2 strong characters propping her up and helping her. + Show Spoiler + Despite Haru being regulated as side character she has shown that she actually has a lot in common with Raku and that they get along pretty well. Haru also is 100x more decisive and not a coward. She would have already confessed and been dating Raku by now if she wasn't loyal to her sister. Yui-nee already made her feelings known but knows how to read the mood of Raku and company (as well as having knowledge of what went down when they were kids). So she is just bidding her time waiting for the kids to get their shit together before she makes her move. Which is why Yui-nee is the best girl. Yeah pretty much this except for Yui is the best girl.

Kosaki has to back away because she's a doormat and Japs fucking love doormat girls. Hell even West loves doormats as she ranks top 2/3 in popularity pools on stuff like reddit/MAL. It's perplexing.

Nisekoi deserves all the aggro it gets. Before I bitch about it, I do like it and read it and will likely watch S2.
Well, the reason I say Hayate > Nisekoi is because I think the comedy aspect is written far better even though it focuses less on art/cutesiness of girls. Whereas Nisekoi constantly makes wild situation -> attempts touching or a tense moment -> situation is completely undone, often times by something stupid. Which is kind of the point, to be stupid and enjoyable.
Read Nisekoi, really liked it (first 40-50 chaps?), disliked it, liked it and hated myself. Then thought it was "meh" but kept reading anyway. It's a little too repetitive because you know every single "development" is going to be completely undone very soon. It's just the author milking his series for all its worth. Which is fine and that's what it has become. But if it's going to do that it had better have better comedic writing rather than watching Raku get flustered. Raku is beyond dense, which is needed for a manga like this but still him stammering and getting flustered is obnoxious a lot of the time when he should just act normally. Especially given all his experience now. However for it to develop would change what it has become. So it will just continue like this until sales drop to X point and then development will finally happen.
Despite that, most or all of the characters are likeable, even Raku. And, I think it may have had some comedic moments ages ago but those got a little further apart. Basically at this point I haven't looked forward to any chapters in a long time.
Read the first chapters of the LN for Spice and Wolf last night. I'd already watched the anime but still enjoyed it.

oh man comedy of the season crossange is also finished.
|
Ah I read the first 5 LN for S&W and enjoyed it. Think you'll like the rest since we seem to read similar books. Book 4 is quite fun which didn't get adapted for some reason. Should be getting the next 8 in a week or two.
Nisekoi would really benefit from just ending then the author going back to write maybe side stories of certain characters either before the main story or during. That way he wouldn't have to reharsh story elements just to pad out the sales while still riding off the Nisekoi brand name.
|
Yea dunno why they skipped vol 4, it was just as drama/intense as 5 ~ They probably just wanted to show Eve. I have read the 1st 10 LNs of S&W and it maintains its level pretty well. A little lul in the 7-9 range (forget which one was weak) but its still good. Just need to finish it off.
|
Yeah I think I'm going to enjoy the rest even if it's more of the same. Holo godtier and Lawrence is not bad at all and may be pretty great. I actually like the writing a lot so far. I was expecting to get bored since I already knew the story but instantly got hooked and read way more than I expected to.
Your Nisekoi idea sounds a lot more enjoyable than what's currently going on tbh.

I loved the the contrast in dynamic between the two couples and then Holo getting all flustered after the dinner.
As for Nisekoi yea i think that would work out pretty well. It's a largely character driven story with the story only there to drag the characters along but the issue is it's set up with a finite story so when that isn't moving along it doesn't feel good to the reader. Just finishing the story then going back and revisiting the characters is just a better way to go about it. You never want your audience wishing for a story to end, you want them praying for the end to never come and when it does they love the end too. Ending something shouldn't be scary, it's just a natural progression of the story and should be embraced.

Nanatsu ended perfectly after this arc, such a good production from A1.+ Show Spoiler + but iirc he didnt want princess to come with them in manga??
next arc (ie currently ongoing in manga) is going so good atm so i cant wait for the next course.
Also from the trailer at the end, legend of Arslan anime is coming out next sunday wow!!!! (from the author of FMA/Silver spoon)
|
iirc legend of arslan only has the art done by the author of FMA, she didn't write the story

According to MAL this is correct. The author of the story for Arslan is the one who wrote LotGH.

she actually made changes to the original story.

I see there's a 1995 OVA of Legend of Arslan as well. Didn't realize it was that old. I'm pretty excited for it myself. Looks like medieval fantasy politics which is always fun.

oh didnt know that, makes sense she only draws it
