If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

CoalGuys are good, gg are fags

coalguys fucked up the second to last episode of toradora though, which pissed me off

but yeah they're loads better than chihiro or gg actually it's qq that's doing k-on!

You sure? Last time I saw stuff from Chihiro and Coalguy, the former's quality clearly trumped the latter in terms of translation.

Sorry konadora, should've specified that it was raw. There has to be other raw watchers here ><

There are like 7 different raws out for K-On episode 10. It's kind of imbalanced how popular that anime is.

Like 4 of them were fakes from share, ffs, I swear I download k-on like 3 times every week between different raws and archiving subs.

There are a few good subbers, and I only trust these: Ayako, Chihiro, gg (their Code Geass subs for season 1 was good), qq (but they are damn fking slow), CoalGuys, SS-Eclipse, Static Subs (SS), Eclipse, m.3.3.w (they do mostly shoujo stuff though)

A few up and rising subbers with good quality are O-L (Otaku-Legends), Desire (subbing Phantom) and Shinji (they are pretty okay)

Chihiro
I find Chihiro subs awful.

What about menclave (freaking slow, bu really good)
Also known as waterfall / w4terfall

Chihiro are okay, but sometimes they fuck things up. Like their 853x480 releases of Asura Cryin'.. it fucks up badly. They also need to use better fonts (aka AKIKAN)

Menclave is kinda too slow, never got to download any of their subs lol

I once waited weeks for qq's release of Toradora, I gave up in the end. Way too slow.

SS-Eclipse is a bit annoying, though it is a matter of personal taste. When Lunar did transliterations I didn't have any issues, but when SS-Eclipse do I can't but help feel that they are taking too much liberties. In terms of just accuracy though they are excellent. Personally, Lunar and KAA are the best subbers I've seen, except the former is inactive and the latter works on random things from DVD rips. I haven't checked any of those new subbers yet, largely because I gave up and used raws, sitting around to download subs by the seasons :p

Menclave is really good, but yeah, they are freaking slow. I mean, I've seen worse, but they are up there.

iirc the last series Lunar did was Shikabanehime Aka?

Oh, I forgot to mention StrikeS and Shinsen-Subs as a few notable ones (not that good though).

a.f.k. was amazing with SZS and haruhi (and that random offshoot from anon that finished ZSZS... called itself [volans])

pretty much only solar and c1 did honey and clover, and i preferred solar, but they're defunct now i think

Yeah I think they are defunct, I haven't seen anything from them for ages. I swear a.f.k. really turned into sprocket or something, because the translation styles are similar. Granted, it is just being as literal as you could most of the time :p

They are doing Souten Kouro and Eden this season, the latter is moving at a pace that's slow even for them though.

As for Shinsen...they suffer the problem of being big, by big I mean huge, the quality varies between each work because they just have different people working on them.

these days, speedsubbers pretty much win all the downloads

and most speedsubbers aren't so bad as to warrant a redownload when the slower fansub groups catch up

speedsubs are good if you want it fast, I think one of them are Horriblesubs? (They are doing Gintama, ahead like 40 episodes of Rumbel)

But for something like Gintama, it requires better explanation, which is why I'm sticking to slower, better ones

Eew speedsubbers. Honestly at that point I'd just start watching raws and start piecing things out even should I have no knowledge of Japanese. They've gotten better, but even then, meh

You know if Rumble/Shinsen/some collaboration between the two had released any batches for Gintama? I am stuck without vol 25~27 scans of decent quality, so figured I might as well as try to go with the anime while waiting for some good people to show up with good tank scans on share.

Speedsubbers are absolutely fine unless you're watching a psychological anime. Most anime isn't that deep at all and you could get all the meaning from just watching character interactions.

Serial Experiments Lain for instance I wouldn't use a speedsubber with... but a typical regular anime? Don't see why not. Even the speed subs for Geass were rather good.

SZS is a perfect example of something NOT to speedsub... you'd miss half the show from the unsubbed blackboards and screen-filling text

i remember when a.f.k. was releasing them, some episodes were like a fucking month late. they were worth it in the end though. that series is like the gauntlet for fansubbers... probably one of the highest drop rates out there, not that many pick it up in the first place

I choose quality over speed though. Speedsubbers (as in those super fast ones) tend to sometimes translate wrongly/encode wrongly, ending up with a v2 at times.

Hmm when you say speedsubbers I think of coalguy but not eclipse, the polish that eclipse manages to put on their work and the fact that they are generally slower (day+ versus the kind of <1 day for coalguy and co) sets it apart for me.

Lucky Star is harder imo, if I am a translator and have to pick between SZS and Lucky Star I'd take the former in an instant, it is that much easier.

You could get most of the meaning, not all of the meaning. It is just a matter of personal taste though, I am much more willing to tackle something in its original language rather than in a translation that doesn't hit a high enough par.

v2 happens everywhere though lol, they just happen when a group isn't going to pick through a release with a ton of QC runs.

Hey they did both :p

Can't argue though, Lucky Star is a typesetting nightmare.
