There are still a ton of really good movies which come out, the thing is that these usually don't have the same push behind them so you won't hear of them if you are not more engaged with the film scene. Though it's still true that the more mainstream films aren't what they used to anymore (in general, there is a trend).
In terms of big budget films, I'm still looking forward to Dune. I tend to follow directors now instead of hype. Most big studios have fallen victim to corporate box ticking culture and its very apparent in the end products, but some directors have a certain amount of trust put in them that allows them to make the film they want to make.

I look forward to Dune too, more because it's based on my favorite book or one of them. Think the series will be better then the movie, but will still go see it in the cinema.
I am looking forward to Dune too. its the same director that did blade runner right? One of old fav adventure games and pretty decent movie with nice cast.
I went to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the other day knowing nothing about it and it was really good. Better fight scenes than the DBZ movies, but a lot darker tone. Was surprised to learn when I looked it up later that it is the highest grossing film ever in Japan and a big phenomenon over there.

What's this weird gatekeeping shit? If people really do make posts like this then the rest of us that do have some good taste in posts are doomed.
I was making a statement that I have observed recently. I can list so many new movies that came out and totally dissapointed me. I kinda wish , wish, army of the dead, MK and all the recent hyped movies that came out were actually good. Personal opinion tho you might reply. well ok. Maybe if I was 12 years old and never seen movies like Terminator 2 or Conan (the old ones) since we talking about action movies then yeah maybe i would be a bit more positive about these movies but sadly I was born in the 80's.
First, and I say this earnestly, try to look into festivals. There are thousands and thousands of films released every year, but only a fraction get worldwide distribution with big marketing pushes. Check out what Berlin, Cannes and Toronto have on offer, then look at Venice, Sundance, Midnight Sun, Tribeca, and others. Maybe you'll find writers or directors whose work you like. Maybe some specific genre stuff. Some films might require some effort to track down. Others will get picked up by streamers or big distributors. It's been like this for decades, but it's arguably easier to watch more films than ever before.
Second, there's been a push towards franchises, studio control and maximum profits (in Hollywood) since roughly mid to late 70s. Most movies aren't that memorable, it's just the nature of filmmaking. A whole bunch of blockbusters came out in the 80s and 90s that were merely mediocre, and we've largely forgotten about them. Whether that push is more pronounced nowadays, that's up for debate. What's happened for sure is that we've largely lost those mid-budget films. It's either a massive $200M+ blockbuster or a sub $5M awards contender.
Speaking for movie franchises there will be a Kingsmen 3 (prequel) and a Matrix 4. Will avoid Matrix unless to get rave reviews but properly stream Kingsmen later.
Amazon said it hopes to leverage MGM’s storied filmmaking history and wide-ranging catalog of 4,000 films and 17,000 TV shows to help bolster Amazon Studios, its film and TV division.
“The real financial value behind this deal is the treasure trove of IP in the deep catalog that we plan to reimagine and develop together with MGM’s talented team,” said Mike Hopkins, senior vice president of Prime Video and Amazon Studios, in a statement. “It’s very exciting and provides so many opportunities for high-quality storytelling.”

You should definitely give the anime TV show a try. It's really good.
Just watched Wrath of Man
Hollywood's been releasing mediocre crap recently and along comes an oldschool duo of Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham to give us a decent action thriller for a change. Really enjoyable watch.

Yes I agree, on episode 6 now I think. Glad to have found this series.
I just watched Chernobyl TV series and its great from start to finish. I felt sick watching it and also terror. Dialogue, set, acting are all top notch. Only 5 episodes but so much tension packed into those 5 hours, even with knowing how it ends. Highly recommended.
Soo now that we finally get some new blockbusters I figured it's a good time to talk movies again. I watched Black widow yesterday: + Show Spoiler +
to me, being a marvel fanboy, this felt like one of the weakest movies of the franchise. There was some potential there, but none of the characters felt like they got a decently developed story arc, only glimpses here and there, everything story wise felt rushed to me. Action scenes were good, humor was alright, but overall a rather forgettable movie. 5/10
Did you watch Wonder Woman 2 InFiNitY[pG]? Would you say it is on par or better/worse than that film? Some guys at work said it was better than Wonder Woman 2, so im wondering if it is worth going to the cinema for it or waiting until its out on Disney plus?
I did, however I think WW2 was an abomination of a movie. I did watch black widow at home and think it might've worked better at the cinema. Either way it's definitely better than WW2 in my opinion.
BW is pretty bad. 1st act is great but the further you go the worse it gets with the 3rd act being an abomination.
Tomorrow War could work as a lighthearted action flick but it's just so dumb that you completely lose track of the movie because you're just stuck wondering why they make choices they do with each next one being worse than previous ones. There's only so much I can turn my brain off without completely shutting it down and the threshold for this movie is way too low for me.
Tomorrow War is the most baffling action tentpole I've seen in years. It feels like 3 or 4 scripts mashed into one, but then they didn't proceed past the first draft. Or there were tons of re-shoots. Or they had to panic write the script while shooting. Or the entire production crew changed midway through the shoot. I just don't understand it. Twists are laid out that never happen, plot points and characters are forgotten entirely, and yet it still looks and sounds like a $100M production.
I'm all for pulpy schlock, but it's not an interesting trainwreck, it's not quirky, it's just a very messy and utterly confusing film.
If you've missed this gem I highly recommend watching Sputnik (there's even eng dub which is pretty good if you don't like the subtitles).
It's easy to miss since it's not big budget Hollywood production but damn can Russians do a great SF thriller. I love to see more science in my fiction. Really good idea, great execution, amazing characters. Big thumbs up from me.
