Argo: a somewhat boring first half turns into a breath-taking thriller. It's really good, but not Oscar-good 7.5/10 You really just gave one of the best documentaries I've seen in a long long lonngg time, a 7.8? I disappoint. Jiro's dreams of sushi is a solid 8.5/10, and for the bias fans like me, I would even go as far as saying 9 It was so insightful, and the story-telling was magnificently done. You really understood each character by the end, maybe not the lower apprentices, but you could feel the hardship of Jiro's childhood, and how his life is so incredibly strict because of it. Jiro is an incredible movie. If you have some sort of understanding of the Japanese culture, you'll know exactly what they mean when they repeatedly mentioned "shokunin". To a lot of westerners, it may seem odd or even absurb to talk about massaging octopus for two more hours than competition, or not selling rice to New York restaurants, but that's what makes them the best.
This elitist attitude is why Japan is still an amazing country, because there are people aspiring to be the best at everything, be it growing peaches, pickling vegetables, or making sushi. Perfection may never come, but there is no stop in trying.
Definitely one of the best movies I watched in 2012 and 2013.

Recently watched:
Moneyball 7/10
Sherlock Holmes 8/10
Sherlock Holmes 2 9/10
I hope they can keep up with the 3rd/4th because these were some of the best popcorn-movies I've seen in the decade.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower 8/10
Almost, almost too much but manages to keep it's story and style within boundaries, a good although somewhat predictable coming-of-age story. (Not because I've read the book.)

Last night I watched "Midnight in Paris." god i love woody allen

007: Skyfall
Classic Bond movie, but slightly above average. Some epic scenes here and there, just like most good Bond movies. Recommended for any 007 or action fan. 7.8/10
The Shawshank Redemption
I had heard it was a masterpiece so i wanted to watch it from the start only, and i finally managed to get a copy. It is a freaking masterpiece indeed. Every person should enjoy watching this. 10/10
Argo
Watching this just made me stop blindly believing in the Academy Awards. Is a very good movie... but not best move award worthy. At all. Is worth mentioning that Ben Affleck performs considerably above his mediocre average. Still, recommended movie. 8/10

This film isn't as good as Through a Glass Darkly though, it's very dry and not as engaging and too slow and cold (these are probably thematically warranted, but I still didn't get the feeling of brutal but sunny clarity of a winter day that it sort of suggests), even though it's still positing interesting things and has some striking moments. The image of God as a spider does continue (particularly in spirit), which I'm grabbing as the central image to this trilogy. I think the only way I would find it riveting is if I had a personal connection to religion, which I don't. I'll have to see the third one to sum it up as a whole, especially cause this really did feel like the middle entry of a trilogy. I watched it about the same time as you it seems^^ Definitely not my favorite Bergman, I like the theme a lot, and had no problem with the dry tone, but I do think the movie suffers from a few writing problems. I don't think the main character can be a priest and find the way out through a famous passage of the Bible, and one or two dialogue felt a bit weak. That being said, it remains an excellent movie in my eyes.
Gosh, Shawshank, it's like the opposite of a masterpiece, please analyze what you watch a bit more.

I didn't enjoy the Shawshank Redemption nearly as much as anyone else on this planet seems to. I still can't fathom what the hype is all about. 7/10 maybe. Still highly overrated.
I'm gonna try some Ingmar Bergman once I find the time. Been hearing only positive reviews so far.
What I watched recently: Moonrise Kingdom
![[image loading]](http://www.trendengel.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/moonrise-kingdom-wes-andersen-1.jpg)
Light-hearted, funny, for anyone who hasn't forgotten how it feels to be a child. The characters might not be the most believable + Show Spoiler +they're pretting freaking smart and well-spoken for 12/13yo kids but that doesn't diminish the viewing experience that much. 9.5/10
Argo
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/hZESOdb.jpg)
Actually, I saw that before it got an AA. But since I don't watch too many movies I might include it here as well. I thought it was quite suspenseful, very athmospheric, and I find it still unbelievable that the plot happened almost as portrayed in this movie. Unbelievable, but I guess life tells the best stories after all... Nonetheless, Argo was not groundbreaking or anything. It was just a really well done movie. I don't think it would have deserved an Oscar if it weren't for the overall lackluster films this year. So yeah, 8.5/10.
Fargo
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/pwl5hYK.jpg)
Full of black humor, slightly brutal, quirky characters, amazing storytelling. I just love the Coen Brothers. 9.5/10
Tucker and Dale vs Evil
![[image loading]](http://collider.com/wp-content/uploads/tucker-and-dale-vs-evil-logo.jpg)
Horror film parody. Funny, not overwhelming but overall higher quality than most horror movies I've seen so. 6/10
Zombieland
![[image loading]](http://suckerpunchcinema.com/main/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/zombieland_quad.jpg)
Simply amazing. Hilarious, bloody, Bill Murray, Emma Stone. What's more to say? 9/10
Django
![[image loading]](http://www.redcarpetreports.de/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Django-Unchained-wallpapers-1920x1200-4.jpg)
Not as great as expected. A bit lenghty. Still, it's a Tarantino and that shows. 8/10

argo and fargo
I couldn't watch tucker and dale, even though I really, really wanted to. Looking forward to django and argo. Man I loved Zombieland.
I enjoy your taste in movies. I can't see how you might label Shawshank a 7/10 and still call it over-rated. Granted I would have given it a whole point more, I think it lived up to the hype. idk.

Yup, watched it about month ago. Loved every second of it. Can be found on Netflix (US peeps).

Somehow I've seen 0 of the movies that were nominated for best picture this past year. Even had Argo at home and then didn't watch it, dunno why. I guess it seemed like just too much potential for being Hollywood obnoxiously sucking it's own dick. Is that something that actually could be an influential annoyance in it?
I do want to see Silver Linings Playbook though.

I'm not saying it's bad, by any stretch. I'm just baffled how everyone loves it like it was strawberry jam and honey. Not to mention imdb's #1 movie of all time? That's taking it a little far imo.
Movies I forgot to mention:
Martha Marcy May Marlene
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/yufJq2b.jpg)
Almost slipped by me. Great film which touches on issues like puberty and traumas related to cults, group psychology etc. Really really impressive acting by Elizabeth Olsen. Suspenseful, sensitive, haunting movie. Recommended, 8.5/10
Memories of Murder
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/N5epTlz.jpg)
Besides Oldboy, 3-Iron, Mother and Thirst, this was probably my favorite Korean movie of all time (I've watched around 30ish). I can't really say why, it feels so real, contrary to what one might be used to from Hollywood productions. The movie sucked me in. 9/10
Hana-bi (Fireworks)
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/i2UiDyJ.jpg)
Takeshi Kitano. When he's not goofing around in game shows or painting stuff, he's a director. And what an extraordinary one. He doesn't make happy movies. Dolls isn't, Zatoichi isn't, Brother isn't. He acts in most of his movies and I've never seen him smile genuinely. He makes a special kind of movie. He bores some, but he grabbed me and didn't let me go, despite his works being calmly filmed and silent for the most part. I absolutely adore his works and Hana-Bi might be his finest. 9.5/10
Three Colors: White
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/4pZjLIi.jpg)
Part of the Three Colors trilogy, this film might be the happiest of the three. They're all telling a different story and are very loosely linked. White is the happiest one, a story of unrequited love, heart-warming, not goofy or childish at all. It has one of the most lovable main characters in a love story I've ever seen in film. Again, a calm movie (sense a trend here?) which will make you smile from your heart. A bit too slow for my liking maybe (and again, that's saying something). 8/10
Up
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/Sw7gZP3.jpg)
I don't have anything to critisize this movie for, so I will give it a 10/10. I laughed hysterically, I cried manly tears+ Show Spoiler +. The movie is so pure, so sad, so absurdy funny, so beautifully animated. I recommend it unconditionally for anyone with a soul.
A Single Man
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/6zAQ0B1.jpg)
Very good movie by designer Tom Ford (yeah I was like "wat" at the beginning but he shows off his prowess, in a good way). Not to be confused with "A Serious Man" by the Coen Brothers. This movie here is even better. It shows a lot of how design can be put in films to create a picture so aesthetic you could watch it on mute. And it has a great story. And Colin Firth. Watch it. 9.5/10
Cloud Atlas
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/DPbCOo9.jpg)
Left the movies after 3 hours, bored out of my fucking mind. What a pretentious, verbose movie. It's not deep as some people believe it to be (and thus tricked me into seeing it). So much cliché, some much nonsense... Bluargh. Props to Tom Hanks though for being a versatile actor. Shame the movie sucked.

2 Days in Paris
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/ihEk7Gl.jpg)
OK, so this movie is very interesting. It's so uneven that there were parts where it was like cracking me up hilarious, and then other parts where I was like "WTF, this is god-awful." I guess it seems like Julie Delpy has a really funny and interesting perspective, but also didn't really know how to put it all together into a film and character that completely works. Adding voice-overs to explain the ending is like horrible unaccomplished film-making, made me want to vomit, but without that crutch, I'm not sure it really leaves with the effect it intends. But I still had a lot of good will towards it cause most of the meat of it is so good and funny, and Adam Goldberg's character was consistently hilarious.

Argo - Not much to say about it really other than what almsot everyone else says - It's a very good movie, just not Best Picture good. I'm pretty confused by that.
Ted - I rented it basically just to see the bear since I work in the motion graphics industry. He's amazingly well done. The movie itself though... ugh. I didn't find it funny at all. It feels like a Disney Channel kids movie just with stupid cheap laughs from vulgar people with boston accents.

@Spekulatius Hana-Bi, such a great movie. White is the weakest of the three, but it's pretty funny !

![[image loading]](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4e/Fahrenheit_911_poster.jpg) Fahrenheit 911 5/10 I agree with a lot of what he says, but this documentary used every cheap sensationalist trick in the book. He would've come to the same conclusion by just laying out the facts in a straight-forward manner. There was no need for him to dress everything up like he did. Really felt over-the-top. Another thing that bugged me was how he kept drilling in how lazy and incompetent Bush was. It got to the point where a lot of the clip splices of bush were redundant and felt like he was just getting over-personal with his attacks. Seemed just like a child flaming another child. I'm disgusted by bush too, but even I had a hard time taking the constant barrage of out-of-context quotes seriously. I also thought the random bits of humor and music choice were really off-putting.
![[image loading]](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/0d/When_We_Were_Kings_DVD_Cover_art.jpg) When We Were Kings 8.5/10 This is a documentary of the Muhammad Ali vs. George Foreman fight held in Zaire, and the events that led up to it. Just terrific. This documentary did a good job in explaining the controversy surrounding the event and showing why it was one of the most significant fights of Ali's career. Highly recommend regardless of whether you're a fan of boxing. The full HD version is uploaded on youtube if you're interested:+ Show Spoiler +

Toy Story 3
Such a fantastic conclusion to the series Toy Story and Toy Story 2 were near and dear to my childhood, and Pixar did an amazing job concluding with the third
Not exactly recent, but re-watched for some reason...

been on a horror movie kick for a while and here are the most notable for me:
Four Horror Tales: February 29: 91/100 This is how you make a horror movie. Was creepy, exciting, well-paced. Had some classic horror-movie camera angles, decent acting, and an interesting twist. Executed perfectly as a solid horror film, especially since it had (I assume) a rather small budget. Really enjoyed this one a lot, and was super pumped to watch more Four Horror Tales...
Four Horror Tales: Dark Forest: 45/100: So stupid I wanted to cry. Biggest disappointment in a long time, especially after being so pumped up by February 29. Directing was terrible, story was predictable and lame, and the twists were nonsensical and so over-the-top that it made me want to punch the director and script-writer in the fucking face the whole time. Exactly how you don't make a horror movie. Unbelievable how much of a 180 from the first one this was. Whoever made this crap should be ashamed of themselves. Especially because the first 30 minutes or so was pretty good.
Sorum: 75/100 Boring as shit. Moved like a crippled snail on molasses, and at the end of the day, wasn't even a real horror movie. More of a psychological drama. Atmosphere was creepy so that was cool, but everything else was bleh. I liked that the "ghost" was more benign and old-school (stuff falling down, lights flickering) than other stories, but was still not very enjoyable. Not a bad movie, just boring...
Whispering Corridors: 87/100: Decent horror flick. Had really cool blue lighting effects, which I appreciated. (most horror movies go for the red lighting). Acting was alright and the story was decent. Not very scary, but it kept the tensions nicely throughout. I still thought part3: Wishing Stairs was better just cause it was a bit creepier, but this was still a solid effort.

Salò, or the 120 days of Sodom
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/bCRCr7Y.jpg)
It's been over a year now that I've seen this movie in a small cinema close to the Place de la Sorbonne in Paris. A friend said to check it out - it was some kind of retro movie festival at that time didn't know what to expect and I still don't know how to think about it.
I wouldn't consider myself faint at heart. I'm not easily disgusted, I can see blood without a problem, I've been a regular visitor of 4chan back in the days. I watched A Serbian Film, Martyrs, Hostel, Silence of the Lambs, Se7en, Two Girls One Cup, all that shit without an itch. This movie however, grossed me out to a point that I wanted to leave the movies in the middle of the film. I'm actually surprised none of the other spectators did leave that evening, not even the ladies. It's a movie about torture, sadism, rape, murder, subordination and the greed for power, basically the prive evils in the human psyche. Envelop that with the intellectual refinement of the sophisticated, aristocratic abusers and you get a movie that's so appaling you'll feel sick for a few days after watching it. It's more psychologically brutal than visually, and that is considering the fact that this is the most explicit movie I've seen to date. And it's the psychological side that will get to you, despite being used to all the shit that one is possibly exposed to on the internet.
I'm not gonna rate that movie. I consider disgusting me a feat that is not easily accomplished. And that movie did it. And it stuck with me. Apart from that, I still don't really know what to feel. So I'm gonna leave it open. X/10

@Spekulatius I've heard the book is better. I watched that movie some years ago. I felt that my overall quality of life decreased at least for a couple of months.
