Brilliant and nails exactly what it was going for. Watching this is as close as you can get to the portrayed experience while being in the living room or movie theater. It dried out my mouth and made me thirsty, gave me a window into the world where they walked thousands of miles with all their belongings through mostly nothingness into complete uncertainty, and is tense as all get out with its lack of answers. The only problem I had was that a good portion of the dialogue was unintelligible to me, but I didn't even find that very important. It makes absolutely no apologies for not following normal storytelling form nor for its ponderous pace (this is intentional to evoke the unending miles and the isolation of the journey), and I'm sure it's aware of how intolerable it will be to some of the audience but it doesn't care. what a horrible horrible trainwreck of a wannabe movie. i just saw this and you owe me 2 hours of my life yeah, lets make a movie with basically no dialogue, no point, and no ending, where all you see is vast landscapes. but no, that has been done before, we must do something new! LETS MAKE ITS IN 4 TO 3 ASPECT RATIO EVEN THOUGH ITS 2011 seriously, the director responsible for this garbage should never be allowed to make another movie. unexcusable...
I'm going to talk about the 4:3 a little since that's the only thing you really said that wasn't already addressed, and why it's thematically justified. First even if it was widescreen, I don't think anything like this really has been done before. But look at another vast landscape movie, I think Badlands is a good example. In that one, the main idea is that they have broken away from society into a sort of free existence, so all they can see, all around them, represents that freedom (of course the tragedy of them knowing that all of it in reality is closed off to them and that they are always running out of time hangs over it, but that conflict drives the movie). That's where showing the vast landscapes in widescreen draws this conflict and theme out perfectly.
Now with Meek's Cutoff, the theme isn't showing all the landscape as endless possibility, not at all. Instead, they are basically tied to a path, cut off from the world, never knowing what's beyond that one next hill, relying on very tenuous trust (which here is the driving conflict) about what's outside their vision. So this is reinforced by our seeing everything through limited vision, to match theirs. Also, since the movie has a very feminist perspective, and women on the trail wore those bonnets that cut off their peripheral vision for protection from the sun, it is also a literal interpretation of their point of view.
Anyway, I'll paypal you over 2 hours of your life I guess.

This is like my friend's favorite movie, I saw it once quite a while ago and found it hard to follow but liked the style. This time it seemed pretty clear and it made me appreciate it so much more. Getting a grasp on the characters' weirdnesses, what the quirks say about them and are exaggerations of really is the key. It has great poignancy in its surrealism, and it's an excellent movie.
Halloween
![[image loading]](http://static.moviefanatic.com/files/halloween-poster_263x398.jpg) OK so I have seen all sorts of weird and obscure horror movies but not some of the absolute canon, so I'm trying to fix that. Honestly this doesn't hold up that well to a modern eye in my opinion, but of course it's so hard to judge because this created a lot of the things we probably take for granted and are so used to. Visually it's amazing, the composition of shots, and their creativity are completely inspired and are total game-changers. The score is so memorable too, but I'm not sure it's always used to the best effect. The acting, writing, and storyline are all sorta bad and laughable though, none of it elevating above the b-movie level, which makes it hard to really get into and undermines a lot of the power the visuals work would be creating.

Argo
Good stuff here. On a base level, its interesting from a historical perspective. On top of that it is well directed, with a good mix of suspense and drama, with just the right touch of humor. The pacing is great- always pulling you along without rushing anything. The acting and script were both fine. Ben Affleck did a good job redeeming himself. Better than I remembered him.
And finally, so many awesome mustaches! 8/ 10

I did a World War 2 spree recently.
Defiance I am mixed about, but the last two I watched are the ones that are heart splittingly sad.

Two girls--one seeks revenge of the people who tortured her as a child, the other rides along with her friend's insanity. They both seek answers to why she was tortured. Lots of slashing, gore, ghouls, and a cult's quest for the meaning of life. Very fast-paced and the ending will have you thinking. ![[image loading]](http://www.esplatter.com/images/insideposter.jpg) Another horror film that follows HIgh Tension's footsteps. An insane woman hunts and stalks her prey, a pregnant woman in her house. She doesn't know why she's being targeted and the result is alot of dead bodies. This movie is a straight up slasher and probably had the most gore of any movie I have seen to my memory. The ending is so fucked up and exhausting that you will ask yourself "What the fuck did I just watch?" Enjoy.
I recently watched Martyrs and i liked it a lot but it will fuck with your head. Half way through i thought the movie was over... how very very very wrong i was.

Crazy stupid love.
Wow, talk about non-cliche romantic comedy. I wouldn't even put it in the romantic comedies category as a whole. I don't even remember when I cared so much about every single character in one movie for a long time. Carrel is amazing in this. Such as the rest of the crew. Music fits the tone of every scene.
9/10 on romantic comedies. Minus one point for the gay ending speech. (This is from a guy who's favourite romantic comedy is Chasing Amy). 8/10 on the general movies, which is pretty amazing since it is that genre. Kind of.

Really? I thought it was rather bland, boring and repetetive to be a good action movie. There were many better movies of this type released in the past years.

I have to admit I haven't watched that many movies in the past couple years and I'm sure there are some out there that might change my view on it. Still, when the movie ended I was hungry for more. The fights scenes were great and I liked how little dialogue there was. The whole thing is pretty straightforward and saves you the pain of going through cheesy lines/unfunny script/useless drama/complicated plots that make no sense which are most of the time included in such movies.
At the end of the day, I really loved it and it is def going to go in my collection once I have some extra cash. I also heard they're making a sequel and I can't wait.
Despite all that, I'll be more than happy to watch any other movie suggestions you may have

Jason Stathom films are somewhat hit or miss in my book, and this one was rather entertaining until shortly after the climax of the story. Certain things happen which ruined the rest of the film for me.
Pre-Climax, 8/10 Post-Climax, 4/10 So an overall 6/10, I guess. Rather average film when it comes down to it. Only watch if bored and want a mediocre thriller.
+ Show Spoiler [Plot Spoilers within] +After the explosion at the meeting house in which Conners (Stathom) "dies." Shane Decker receives a call from Lorenz/York (Snipes) that set off a lot of flags for me (The fact that we learn the caller was Conners laters is irrelevant at this point). Why did York make the call? He gave away who the dirty cop really was and lead to his discovery and eventual death. Why use his own cell to make the call, and then keep it? When Deckers is fighting York on the Pier, it hit me. He wanted to get caught. I thought he wanted to fake his death. This is when I realized that Conners did not die in the earlier explosion. This allowed me to piece together that Conners had the power cut during the bank heist to help the virus on purpose. This small chain of events reveals the plot twist before it even happens in the film. And things like that always disappoint me. + Show Spoiler [Shutter Island mini rant] + Shutter Island was even worse about it. The previews give away that Leonardo is the "missing" patient and ruin the whole film.

I don not wish to rewatch it anytime soon, nor could I recommend it to anyone. You cannot like it, unless you have a very sick mind. it's not really an horror movie, though I had to turn my head at some points, and I felt very sick by the end of it. It's an experience, that makes ou ask yourselves complicated questions on freedom power, images, cinema... Was it worth seeing it ? I don't know. What is sure is that it was the most diificult movie I've watched in my life.

It depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for fight scenes then Ong Bak and Fearless are both better than TRR (the biggest gripe I've had with TRR was that all fight scenes looked similar and dragged on forever, so long in fact that I lost all interest in them halfway in). I also enjoyed Redbelt a lot as it's more 'calm' in its approach to violence and rises some interesting issues. If you like MMA you can also go with titles like Blood and Bone and Undisputed series.

I personally enjoyed the thin story line and continuous action of TRR. I second Manitou's recommendations except Blood and Bone (haven't seen it.) The undisputed series would probably be my least favorite of the ones mentioned. Fearless was quite good, the story is well known and it's presented well, I think. Ong Bak is just awesome. Tony Jaa is the reason I started learning Muay Thai.

V for Vendetta 9/10
![[image loading]](http://moneyteachers.org/images/V.jpg)
Really liked this movie, it was well done with great plot, characters(V is a badass), twists, and of course the action. Also, I liked how the movie incorporated almost every aspect in the movie to hint the number '5' or the letter 'V' It made me really appreciate not having an totalitarian government that spies on its own people and uses fear to control.

100% disagree.
This doesn't come close to anything ever made by Beat Takeshi.
Potential spoilers + Show Spoiler +
Try watching the first scene again, the acting is crap.
I would have rather had no plot than the one given in this film.
The choreography is OK, but definitely not on a similar level to Ong Bak, silly to even compare them. Ong Bak doesn't even use wires.
This is more like a B movie version of The Raid
My rating: 4/10.
I may have enjoyed it more going into the movie not expecting anything, but you really built it up comparing it to Battle Royale and Ong Bak. I was disappointed in every aspect.

My main issue with V for Vendetta is how emotionally manipulative and how shallowly propagandized it is.
Children of Men kills it, it might be the best post-2000 movie I've seen.
Watched: Lovefilm (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066429/)
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/M1qGM.jpg) Saw this in class a few years ago where I knew immediately it was great but had to focus a lot on understanding what was going on and on analyzing what you could read from the visual shots (especially where there are discontinuities forced by real life circumstances). So I had to just watch it now as an experience to confirm what it was like, and it's one of my favorite movies ever. It's storytelling is off the wall awesome, basically following the thread of the main character's memory/thinking as it skips from one aspect of his life to another, usually triggered and linked by some image or location that he sees or that is part of the previous memory. The framing action is a trip he's taking from Hungary to France to see his lifelong close friend/girlfriend who left Hungary at the 1956 uprising and he hasn't seen in 10 years. Strongly embedded in it is the story of Hungary from WWII through the later 60's. I just think this is so powerful, and once you get the hang of it, the storytelling is perfectly evocative of memories.
These aren't plot spoilers but a basic helper for following it right off the bat if anyone's interested: + Show Spoiler +There are 4 main important times depicted that it freely switches between as it follows Jancsi's rememberings: 1. The film's present, his trip to France in 1966-1967 or so 2. Children in World War Two 3. Children in the later 40's after the war 4. Older teenagers in mid 50's/1956 near the uprising (with the adult actors)
I want to get around to more Bergman films soon, I've only seen two, The Seventh Seal and Fanny and Alexander, loved them both though.
Salo...I can't tell if I want to see it (probably not), mainly it would be for the curiosity of seeing if there could be anything of value in it.
