GoT S01E01 - I'd give a 8/10, veryyy good.
What I don't like
- Lack of massive armies (could be solved with CGI or bigger budget) - Robert is supposed to arrive in Winterfell with a HUGE crowd, they seem to be 50 people at most - Eddard is supposed to leave Winterfell with EVEN MORE people but again, all we see is 5 horses - Drogo's khal = 4 people ? Seriously, and the wedding = 50 people = seriously ? In the books there is a hill full of people. - Drogo's wedding night, he didn't rape the girl at all in the book, he was very gentle. - I also missed the part where she gets her white horse and rides it immediately which makes Drogo laugh.
Overall the episode was VERY good, I'm just afraid that the low budget / small cast will keep them from having MASSIVE armies / battles, and that's what Peter Jackson managed to do so well.
Not going to fault you or hate you on this post bro. But I'll tell you one thing.
First episodes are pilots. As it'll go further and deeper and pick up more sponsorships it'll get more people. Don't worry so much. Just be supportive.

I hope it has the same shocking effect it had on me when I read the books. At first i raged, but then I loved it because it makes AGOT a lot less predictable than most other stories I've watched/read. Sure, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't acknowledge the actors for what they do, even in the small parts.

Yeah, I was thinking of making a new poll after the second episode comes out for that reason. Just from the previews, Varys and Littlefinger look great (didn't see the other two in previews). I could tell who Littlefinger was just from seeing him and hearing him speak a couple words, which is a pretty good sign, imo.

Yeah, the good news is GoT getting a second season since the pilot was such a hit. Hopefully they will get a better budget.

This is great to hear, I don't think the show really needs a bigger budget, everything has looked great to me so far, and I'd rather it runs for more season on a lower budget than not finishing the story, there are so many scenes I want to see play out.
The only criticism I have aside from nitpicking is that the music, particularly the title score wasn't that great.

I have read the books but after reading through the last few pages of this thread some people are putting HUGE spoilers in. I know that there is spoiler tags and all but still there is no point in mentioning it you will just ruin it for someone who hasn't seen the show.

Better budget? I've read its the most expensive per episode tv-series to date. Things look quite brilliant ^_^
edit: Which means: Pay HBO some dollars somehow if you aquired it via other means and liked it, quality needs cash to continue being quality in cases like this.

I'm curious about how the Bran arch will be realised...

Its not about "needing a bigger budget" but simply "continiously having a larger budget".
Without spoiling...season one introduces quite some placed we've already seen (winterfell, kings landing, penthos, the wall) and of course some more as the season progresses, yeah, those have been build, so the costs are paid for, given that some of those places will continue to play a big role in the series.
but -
as the series moves on, it only gets bigger and bigger, and while of course certain cast members, as its normal for a tv series, will cease to exist, the basic cast will grow exponentially the more main characters get revealed. Thats more money needed for actors (and a simple "we'll just tone it down" isnt really possible wihtout damaging the pure essence of the saga). Plus there are s shitton of places that need to be build as requisites that'll consume even more money. Lastly, like described, at the latest when we get to season 3 just 10 episodes per book wont cut it, so thats even more money to be invested.
Lets hope HBO is keen on expanding the show to that point, and if it stays as success as the first season (in an financial aspect), then HBO wont have to worry about investing more money.

First season will most of the time be much more expensive than the sequels. All the costumes, scenes and CGI has to be created after all, not to mention studying the script, doing auditions and briefing the actors.
There's a possibility that S2 runs at higher cost if actors suddenly asks for much higher wages. I'm hoping this doesnt end suddenly after just 2 seasons (like Rome, the best serie ever!).
I just might have to pick up the books, 1 episode a week is torture!

The initial cost is pretty massive for these kinds of shows. Boardwalk empire is another wich needs a massive initial start up price to pay for building the sets and costumes.
Next seasons might even be cheaper since a lot of it has been build allready.
New seasons also introduce new areas but noone as big as the initial season i think. It's an expensive series but money isn't a major concern. It's a high-profile show and if it manages to catch it's audience then the show will keep paying for itself. I am pretty sure HBO has allready earned their investment back from the first season by selling it to other stations/countries.
A bigger investment only means a bigger risk but it's clear at this point that GoT is the kind of show that earns back the money that goes in. If this ever takes a turn for the worse and the audience starts to dissapear that might change. I don't believe it will, i have a lot of faith in the story created by GRRM and just as much faith in HBO. The material is great and the production force behind it is equally great.
They can always cut some minor locations to save costs
Do not read if you have not read book 2 + Show Spoiler +For example the city that Danny rests her small group in when she is travelling across the desert. It serves no real purpose and can easily be cut and replaced by more footage of her group travelling through the desert.
Things like Dragonstone can't be skipped ofcourse. Still it's important to remember that whilst the story has a lot of locations, a lot of them are also allready build. Each book slowly introduces more areas and from a production point of view that's perfect.

After watching the first episode and never having read the books I think it walked a pretty damn good line of keeping interest while building up each character.
Watching the episode made me think of it as a tidal wave. It starts out really small out in the middle of the ocean somewhere but eventually gathers strength until it washes over you and you can't help but become entirely immersed in a sea of awesome. (Edit: I mean that the first episode was the small drop/beginning, the rest of the season[s] will be the coming tidal wave )
I definitely have very high hopes for the show.
Also, as a small aside, I honestly had no idea it was a fantasy show! I thought it was a medieval times show based loosely on some random medieval story lol. I was very pleasantly surprised when at the start the "wilderlings?" showed up and then the dire wolves (how fucking cool are dire wolves? Seriously!)
Definitely excited to see the show progress :D
Edited again since some people take offense to my throwing scifi/fantasy/makebelieveshitthatdoesntexistirl into the same category lol

Sci-fi? The genre is called Fantasy, unless I've missed sighting the laser shooting droids -_-
|
The wildlings are the people that were cut apart at the intro. The people that found them were the nightwatch.
The creatures are called white walkers. Wildlings are just humans that live beyond the great wall in, as you may guess, the wild.
|
yes, wildlings are basicly northern barbarian raiders that the nightwatch patrol was tracking. The wildling girl who was pinned to the tree that comes back to life with the blue eyes is a wight, created by the white walkers (the ones with the ice swords that do the beheading).

Yeah I don't think we will meet Littlefinger and Varys til episode 3, since 2 seems to cover + Show Spoiler +the trip to King's Landing and the Wall, along with Dany learning Dothraki ways. They got a beefed up 7 foot actor to play the Mountain, and the few limited clips I have seen of Bronn have been good. There are a ton of other characters that haven't been seen at all, or haven't been officially named on the show to new viewers yet: Hound, Theon, Lord Commander Mormount, Maester Aemon, Maester Pycelle, Renly, Ser Loras, blood riders, Syrio, Lancel, and Lord Tywin off the top of my head.

Ah I see so I had it backwards!
In the books do they make such a short first appearance because as far as the show went it definitely left me asking a lot of questions about wtf they are, where they're from etc
I thought the girl was one of the creatures just faking being dead or some such to bait them back but i guess the creatures are actual creatures. didn't really get a good look at them so I just assumed they were humans with funky eyes
I think I'm going to have to Amazon the books unless someone has them on mp3 audio that i could listen to while HoN'ing or solitaire'ing I'm much too impatient to wait week by week to find out what happens in the story and the books are probably better anyway
