Joffrey for example is about as close to evil as it's possible to be. Ned was a good ruler and GRRM killed him. i can't think of one instance where we as an audience see, or hear about, Ned make a solidly good moral decision that requires a large sacrifice on his part. i see plenty of "obeying my orders" choices, and even some morally questionable choices (does anyone really think Ned's conscience wasn't bothering him when he killed Sansa's wolf?), but i can't think of any thing besides MAYBE warning Cercei, but i don't even think that one should come close to counting, since he's not exactly being very helpful by warning her, and it would require no sacrifice on his part to look the other way on the issue of the royal heirs. (as in, warn Cercei that she's probably going to get caught, offer to help her if she needs it, shelter her children if they need it, not tell her bloodthirsty husband) basically, would any of you execute the Night's Watch guy from the beginning of the show? i mean, put yourself in Ned's shoes and really think about it; would you execute a guy just for running away from a life that you yourself wouldn't want to live? when the guy was more than likely forced into being there against his will and had just been attacked by friggin zombies and was probably half-insane with fear? i just don't see how we're supposed to believe that the same guy who makes the decision to swing the axe in that instance is some Dudley Do-Right.

I don't think Ned was a dudley do right, just that he was a pretty fair guy as far as things go. Joffrey is a complete twat by comparison. I don't think the story would be ANY good if every 'good character' was a paragon of virtue. But Ned is clearly a 'good' character simply because he was not a masochistic, psychopathic serial murderer like half of the characters in this show.

It seems like many people in this thread see Ned as a mindless avatar of justice that would cut off Jon's head if he deserted, but the character is much deeper than that. When it came down to it, Ned chose to protect his daughter instead of doing the arguably "honorable" thing by resisting Joffrey to the end. It's foolish to try to cast any character in this show as purely good or evil (except for maybe Joffrey and Gregor I guess...) Ned has always struck me as a very human character who tried to do what he thought was right even when none of his options were good. He did this better than virtually every other character in the show, and I was truly sorry to see him go T.T

You made your INTERPRETATION of the character based on your PERCEPTION of the story and you already spent 2 pages of that thread trying to convince everyone that your "truth" is the only "truth", insulting all those who didn't agree with you. I think we've all heard enough of your opinion on that topic and it would be a good idea to stop now. And don't ask me to prove you wrong or to play your little game, I'm not interested. I only find a debate interesting when the people participating are open-minded, which you obviously are not! So there's no point discussing that topic with you. We get it, you think Ned is weak and probably half as bad as all the others, cool story bro!

(in my opinion) 2. when did i insult anyone? if i did then i do apologize, i didn't mean to come off as insulting. And don't ask me to prove you wrong or to play your little game, I'm not interested. ok? edit: i should clarify because i think you misunderstand me (and it's my fault i think): i was simply trying to examine the character of Ned cause i think he's an interesting one. i first approached the series hearing that he was the "good guy" of the story, and was left with kind of a bitter taste when i thought about it. if it seems like i've ignored the counter points to my theory than i should back up and explain that that's not true. reading through the responses to my original posts, i realized that i was looking at it kind of simplistically too and wasn't thinking about all the angles or nuances. i can see how it looks like i'm just spouting off, but that's because im dumb and i can't get my point across very well. if a discussion of Ned isn't interesting than that's cool, but i'm not trolling, or at least im not trying to troll.
