Secondly, perhaps spears are the only weapons they have and are proficient with. Thirdly, I'd imagine spear and shield are actually adequate weapons in the very narrow streets we saw, that's an ideal situation for a phalanx. The problem was they were surprised, surrounded and vastly outnumbered, so they were screwed no matter their equipment. If the Unsullied had taken a few steps back out the door through which they had come, they could have Sparta'd the attackers no problem. No the unsullied weren't trained as an army. They are combat slaves that should fit the needs of their masters. The main customers would be rich merchants and local despots without access to conscripted local forces. Obviously their roles would often include exactly guard duties and patrols in urban areas. They are too expensive to be used as an actual standing army (unless you steal them of course). By all imaginations they SHOULD have been trained in close quarter combat and equipped with a short sword or similar. It's simply an oversight of the show runners due to short sightedness, or maybe they were cutting the props budget.

If you guys would be that negative on all the other aspects of the Show that don't make sense.. then ok. But this "discussion" here is just ridiculous nitpicking.

You are correct that the combat (and arms/armor) is unrealistic, but it certainly isn't filler. It's used the way you use combat or nudity in well-done film or theatre: it advances the themes and plot. And it's very carefully done for that. As logistically and tactically absurd as much of the fighting is, (up and down the elevator!) there's real care done in the symbolism of all of it. Yes, the Knight of Flowers' frilly lacy helmet was absurd, but it's there to remind you he's more about the show of being a knight than the combat about it. The sword combat styles are a really cool example of this. Contrast the way any two duelists fight, and it is always indicative of their culture/attitude: -Jaime likes to fight from a high guard, point toward the enemy, ready to thrust. Brienne does this to an extent (though she has shown a number of styles), and I think we're supposed to think this is what "classical" well-trained westerosi fighting looks like. -Loras Tyrell has always so far been shown to fight with a shield, using it very aggressively as a weapon as well as a defense, and seems focused on disarming or disabling his opponents, a more "cunning" way to fight in some respects -The extreme end of the "cunning" side is, of course, Bronn, who fights one-handed and uses the other hand for agility. He also sometimes uses a dagger. -Jorah fights one-handed too, but in a distinctive way with his offhand open and used more for grappling than balance, which might be a Dothraki touch. -The Hound and Mountain fight alternative one and two hands -Ned (in his one fight) and Jon Snow (in his many) both fight in a low guard style, presumably because they're using larger, heavier swords. It's a muscular, slashing style, often very vertical. Kit Harrington has, I think, some of the most impressively athletic swordplay in the show, which is probably appropriate for the character. -The Hound and Mountain also have a powerful style, but it's more about horizontal slashing and often switching to one hand or otherwise using the body as a weapon. But the really revealing part is when they diverge from usual style, which says something about their current situation. Remember how Jaime once used a sneaky dagger move to kill Ned's guard that one time, to show him being ruthless and (literally) underhanded? Or when Jon Snow's "whore mother" was mocked by that Nightswatch guy who sacrificed himself in his duel with Snow, and right afterward Snow actually switches to the "classical" Jaime-style guard for a moment. Or basically every fight with Brienne, where she is constantly showing different styles, often matching her opponent: she fights Loras with a shield, playing the disarming/disabling game, Jaime in the classical style, starts the Hound fight in the classical style, then switches to "dirty" fighting after he does. I think it's partly because she's not grounded in any one place as most of the characters are, but also to demonstrate her superior natural mastery of combat.

True enough. I guess Robb's heart could have still been beating when the scene was cut, maybe he is in Frey's dungeon. Actually if Viserys had gotten those 3rd degree burns treated quickly enough he could be in Pentos working as a juggler right now. When being choked you could simply lose consciousness and go limp, assuming Tyrion isn't an expert on asphyxiating victims Shae could come back next episode like "Sup?".

They are specifically not made for city guards/patrolling duties, but they can do this, they will do anything to obey. Also, they have short swords so they aren't just spearmen
