What's wrong with Fox?

Could someone explain some things to me?

1. Firefly

Absolutely cult series, voted The World's Best Space Sci-Fi Ever. It had about 4.7million viewers at the time of cancellation. Not being renewed even after years of pleading by a gazillion fans.

2. Terra Nova

Some facts:

The Fox premiere drew 9.22 million viewers and 3.1 in the 18–49 demo in live plus same day results, rising to 4.1 in Live+3, the best result by a new drama.
In its second week on Fox, the show retained 100% of its demo rating (3.1), the best retention by a new series.

Sounds good, doesn't it?

3. Almost Human

#5 show on Fox in 2013-2014, got cancelled even though stuff (like 30 other shows) that did much poorer than it wasn't...

Why are they doing this? Three awesome shows cancelled after the first season... I feel sad.

Dollhouse too was awesome and got brutally destroyed by having to wrap it up in 2 seasons.

Those shows are expensive to make. Other networks have also cancelled popular expensive shows (Flashforward was cancelled by ABC despite an 8,5 million audience). It's simply more profitable to make relatively cheap shows that can last a long time (this is also why singing/cooking shows and the likes are so prevalent). If you run an high scale sci-fi series you better hope it's a hit (think Lost level) to keep it running.

Also, right now, shows are written for a single season often with no specific ending and they need writers to keep it going past that. If they can't or if the project is not profitable enough they just drop it. those shows are a gamble, and recently apart from The 100 none have really succeded in getting a good enough following to justify their cost.

And V as well. There are plenty of examples of sci-fi series getting dropped despite good numbers.

You have to understand what it means to be on basic television. If it isn't Reality, Law, or Medical Drama then it usually won't work as viewers don't like to think they like the story to think for them.

And The 100 make my eyes bleed but that's beside the point. Those shows have good numbers and yet get cancelled.

So that's why people don't watch Black mirrors and Utopia? Or is it because they are british shows? I can't decide.
