The Uchiha clan were going to revolt against Konoha. To prevent a war from occurring, the village elders ordered Itachi to destroy the clan.

Beforehand he tells Sasuke that Madara helped him in wiping out the Uhicha.
He is also one of the strongest ninjas alive, capable of wiping out one of the strongest clans with help of 1 person.
Now all of these we know mostly from what villagers say and what Madara says.

You do realize that we can have different opinions based on the information presented to us, right? My opinion of itachi, as of now in the manga, is that he believed the purpose of his life was to serve konaha, and we haven't really seen much about his character outside of that.

its been a while since i read those chapters, but iirc, before anyone order him to do anything they first updated itachi about the situation and discussed with him what should be done, then when the decision was made, mutually, its was given as his mission.
Asking somone if they want to get a drink, then them saying yes, and then ordering them them to get one, is hardly the same as just ordering someone to get a drink irrispective of their wishes.
