What I mean is this: the anime progresses quicker than the manga. Every week (barring certain holidays, hiatuses, illness, etc.), both a chapter of the manga will come out and an episode of the anime will come out. The anime episode is roughly 20 minutes long. The average weekly shonen jump manga chapter is roughly 17-20 pages long. It follows that the anime will tend to progress faster than the manga, even with dramatic pauses, musical interludes, more drawn-out fight scenes, and the like. As such, the need for "filler" episodes arises, in which characters basically do random things that have no impact on the main storyline of the anime and are usually considered non-canon. This is also why you'll hear people groaning about filler episodes (they tend to be generally inferior in quality of story, etc. as well). | ||
