The original funimation dub tried too hard to "Americanize" the characters, especially Goku, and modify their personalities in ways that undermined the characters they really were. Goku is not a Superman archetype, and that "what a waste" scene as Vegeta escapes is a good example of a bad modification to personality. Sure, it's a little thing, but so was "Han shot first."

I liked the original dubs and still go back and rewatch episodes and arcs every now and then, a classic imo. Sure, maybe they changed personalities slightly but it's not that a big deal for me.

There is something to be said that the original is preferred largely because it's the original. I grew up on the dub, and later experienced Kai, and I found the transition to the original Japanese to be rough at first, I've only started getting used to it lately as I've been watching Super. Say what you will about any changes to character, but I 100% prefer the English cast whenever I get the choice.

I prefer English when they are of comparable quality. DBZ you could say is comparable in quality though I do like both. Something like Yugioh, though, where the Japanese is the clearly superior product, there is no comparison.

Ocean dub of Z sucked though.

dub is vastly superior to subs. the japanese voices are annoying and high pitched and girly, not like the manly goku and vegeta murican voice actors. in return of frieza, when vegeta says: "i too have the power of a god" that shit was epic

I really don't like goku's japanese voice either, but most of the time japanese dubs are still superior because it feels like they take it more seriously

English dubs (I've only ever watched up to freeza saga dubs) felt a little too cartoonish. Felt like fart jokes.

Subs takes some time to get used to. When I got used to it I liked subs a lot more. I wouldn't switch back to dub even if I could.

While I agree that subs are generally superior, I think for dbz, the dubs were more than fine. They were great. As mentioned, Goku's japanese voice sounds girly as hell compared to the dubs voice, especially in DBZ. Vegeta sounds ok but the dubs makes his angry more pronounced I feel, dunno. I think for something like DB/DBZ/DBS, it's good either way but for most other anime, the sub is mostly the superior one.

Out of the Japanese version, the character I think they did best was Freeza. He has that perfect combination of malice and confident arrogance that works perfectly. Took many years for the English dub to ultimately just do their best imitation of the same,

Freeza is just right. I haven't heard Cell subbed, but I love his dub.It's even better in DBZ Abridged (DBZA)

It is not really fair to compare Metzen's recent story-writing to that of a shallow Japanese anime. What Metzen tried to do, and utterly failed at, is intended to be way more superficial than watching badly drawn buff bloodied up guys scream to 'charge up' for 5 episodes straight.

As for sub vs dub, the dubs have such a different feel to the whole show. Like they replace the music with rock stuff and cool sounding stuff. In the original, everything is barely no cringy and feels very Japanese.

As for Goku's personality, that is completely split. He changes from a child completely lacking any sense of responsibility to someone dead serious when he is fighting someone really strong and is about to lose. His whole demeanor changes and he suddenly is a different person. You would think that his normal self is an act, or something, and his true personality comes out in battles. But that's not it. It is almost stupid the way Toriyama things he can make it work. I guess it also works because Goku talks in a different style/formality/grammar when he is in different personalities. In English, that is impossible to convey.

In the dubs, I feel it fails. It must be odd to reconcile the two Goku's.

I feel like the tournament would be more enjoyable if they could kill the opponent, Vegeta blasting those two for example would have been better if he just blast them in pieces.

Still not a bad episode quite curious what the angels plan are, seems like they want to destroy every universe, maybe in order to overthrow the omniking?

Shit definitely just got real, that much was made clear by the ending of this episode. I think the theory that the Grand Priest is evil was basically confirmed here.

Freeza torturing the final U9 guy was a gem too.

I knew Grand Priest sama was the real threat. Angels want to overthrow Zen-O and be free from his childish reign. They can probably rally the other universes that aren't in the tournament and come up with something crafty.

This was a really good episode. First half was reused animatied fights, but the second was great.
