The Genius 더지니어스 Season 3: Black Garnet 블·랙가넷
"The Genius" is a Korean reality game where 13 people compete in games that test their logical thinking and social skills. There is a total of 12 rounds (or 12 episodes) in a season. One person will be eliminated in every episode, and the final victor will be named the champion of the season. Season 3 begins broadcast on 1st Oct 2014, and will air every Wed evening on tvN at 11pm (KST).
The currency in this game is called a garnet. Each garnet is worth 1,000,000 won($1000). In the final episode, the champion's garnets are exchanged for real money. Garnets may be given before the game or gained within the game.
Each round will have a Main Match and a Death Match. All players participate in the Main Match where a winner and an elimination candidate is determined. The winner is given immunity. The elimination candidate will then have to choose another person without immunity to go to the Death Match with him or her. The Death Match will then take place and the loser gets eliminated in the round. The winner of the Death Match will gain a Black Garnet. A player on the brink of elimination can exchange three Black Garnets for an opportunity to participate in a Black Mission. Successful completion of the Black Mission exempts the player from the Death Match for that round.

Well, seems like I'm the only one in this thread, but oh well. My thoughts on ep 2. + Show Spoiler +Hyunmin is a fking genius. If you're the citizen leader, your first thought would be to hide yourself, but Hyunmin out mind gamed every1. Holy fk. In that situation, who would have the skills and the balls to earn the criminals' trust, stay hidden, and dispel the idea that you are the leader from their minds' completely. This kid is next level social intelligence, next level Yellow. It also helps that he's the winner of KAIST's The Genius. KAIST being korea's top mathematical and science university.
Also, Kang yongsuk impressed me this round too. He's not that skilled at games, but he's incredibly skilled at dealing with people. He doesn't have the skill of making every1 like him, but dam he's a master at intimidation. Way better than the Seoul graduate student dude. I also liked that he theoretically picked the socially weakest player for the deathmatch. Kyunghoon is not the weakest game player, as evidenced by his first round betrayal, but because of his betrayal, every1 knows that you can't totally trust him. And I think because it was a social game, yongsuk picked kyunghoon, banking on the fact that he would win in the social aspect. The poker dude did try to backstab Kyunghoon. (Poker dude is evil, messing up watermelon in game 1, and trying to backstab. He would be such a badguy if his plans actually worked.) And Even though Kyunghoon theoretically had more allies, I like how Kang Yongsuk turned the tables with his intimidation skills.
Honestly, Kyunghoon was pretty dumb. On round 3 deathmatch, he bet 1 chip when yongsuk was down to 1 chip. He could have just taken over the game right there, but instead makes a poor decision. His other poor decision came like round 4 or 5 when yongsuk all ins, but he decides to win, instead of losing. It was pretty obvious that Yongsuk would try to all in to catch up before it was too late...Yongsuk also made really dumb decisions. This deathmatch was almost as bad as Juri throwing the game. I think both these people are really bad at standard "games" like a lot of people this season, and are better at studying. (Still infinitely better than seasons 1 and 2). Those who are acutally experienced at playing games, like the poker dude, hyunmin, and the kaist teacher dude are better at these types of games imo with the exception of Juri.
Another person I think that I have an eye on is the actress girl with mensa level iq. I like how she's not particularly on any1's side specifically, and she's laying low, trying to survive through the beginning rounds of the games. She's not too close to any1, but she's not distant from them either. Close enough to not be chosen in death matches, close enough not to have any enemies, but clearly not getting into any alliances. Plus, she was a major factor for the citizen team winning. Her acting, or whatever she was doing, kept people's eyes away from the real citizen leader.

holyfuck Im so hyped.
To bad there isn't really a connection to season 2 besides the guy who got elliminated first lol
|
+ Show Spoiler +Hyunmin played so well. The lawyer made a really stupid mistake so it was obvious who the criminal leader was, but the way he concealed his role was really well done. I am happy with the participants, overall there is no one I really dislike. But there is a long way to go yet.
|
woa the games have improved so much,
+ Show Spoiler +sucks for the lawyer that he got discoverd but damm.... his deathmatch skills are scary!
|
+ Show Spoiler +IMO Hyunmin overplayed for this early in the game. Had he let the citizen team vote guilty it's super unlikely that he would've been picked as the leader, and by remaining concealed he could've played off his stealthy moves as listening to Dongmin.
That being said, i'm super hyped for the next few rounds, because I'm thinking it's going to turn into Hyunmin VS Yongsuk alliance-war which would be really awesome to watch go down.
|
This thread made me start watching from season 1 and i love it!
|
Holy shit the presentation texts of the players are epic haha. I'm probably going to start watching that shit.

It wasn't epic but it showed a kind of attention to detail and clean play that is important in the game. This show has the best visualizations ever for the games. It's not easy to make illustrations that are both entertaining to watch and make the games easy to understand while not giving away OP strategies.

+ Show Spoiler +In this case though, I think he was giving up better positioning in the long-term for security from the death match. If he looks like he was just following Dongmin's advice it puts him in a strong position relative to Yongsuk because Yongsuk won't see him as as big of a threat as he does now and will be slightly less guarded against a betrayal from him.

Ep 3 spoilers + Show Spoiler +These kinds of main matches are no fun to watch at all. Clearly if you make a game where only 2 people lose, people are going to gang up and take out 2 people. DM was lost by the lawyer fair and square. The way I see it, the black garnet being a threat is bs. I mean, come on, you need 3 for it to be useful.
I'm not sure about the exact reasons why majority voted for Yongsuk to be 11th, maybe it's because he's strong, maybe they actually believed black garnet was too scary, maybe they don't like him, his threatening, whatever, but it was clear that 1st was going to be either Yongsuk or quick dude because they're solo characters, but Yongsuk was just singled out under the excuse of the black garnet. Yongsuk had no choice in the matter of getting his card, but I think he should have been more sociable to avoid getting singled out(kind of like Dongmin's useless card did). For the oriental medicine dude, they threw him away because he also got a relatively useless card. I mean it could have been him or it could have been any other useless card player, but I believe it's because he just didn't have the sociability, and the right card, he was thrown away. But I really hate these games because it's either you get a good card to be useful to people so you can't be thrown away, or you become likeable or useful beforehand so that you're not auto sent to deathmatch without being able to do anything.
TL; DR don't stand out. Be useful. Get lucky.

wow ep 3 was pretty sick, especially the main match and Ha Yeonjoo crying is making me go (

Wow only just found this thread. If the games are much improved compared to season 2 (I'm hoping so!), then definitely going to get back into it. Need to catch up!

+ Show Spoiler [Ep. 3] + It's pretty obvious to me that they picked Yongsuk b/c of his threatening all of them in the previous episode. (in this instance, picked=both voted for 11th, and chosen to lose the MM). Making that move so early was a bad choice. It basically says to all the players, this is one guy we really don't wanna fuck with, we need to get him out now. They used the black garnet as an excuse to get rid of a scary opponent, but also as a way to get Ahyoung to do what they wanted. (by threatening to get rid of her instead, even if they don't really care about the black garnet she had no way of knowing that, and had to think that if i don't follow along they'll target me instead)
I've felt bad for the oriental medicine guy in all 3 episodes. He really seems like he's kind of the outcast of the whole group (like he's a nerd and the rest are jocks sort of thing). That being said, he did play brilliantly in the DM and Yongsuk messed up a little, and like they said "this is a game where one mistake could end it".
Hyunmin is such a little freaking genius though. He's figured out every game so far, and figured them out so well that he's leaving the others in his dust. He's also been very sociable (or accepted is the word i mean) with the other cast members, so that even when he comes up with an "evil" plan they all just go along with him anyways. He reminds me of a mixture of Sunggyu's social skills and game skills mixed with Yellow's outside the box thinking. The only problem is he's making too much of a scene, so to speak. The other players are going to realize soon enough that he's one that needs to be targeted.
Dangmin is also extremely smart. In this match he figured out the combo's that would make or break the game long before Hyunmin did, but kept the whole plan to himself while only revealing exactly as much as he needed ppl to know in order to figure out what he wanted them to do on their own.
Yeonjoo doesn't really have the gumption for this show. It's gonna really tear her apart the longer she's in it i think.
My two favorites to get in the finals right now are Hyunmin and Dangmin. The dark horse is Sujin who stays quiet enough to not be seen as a threat, but speaks up enough to protect herself and try to win the games (she sort of reminds me of Kyungran a little bit from season 1, where people won't realize how smart she really is, but when they do she can kind of bully them into doing what she wants anyways).
If you have complaints about the MM and how it was played out, remember it's really the producer's fault. They're the ones that thought up the game in the first place, the players are just doing what they think is best to survive. And I actually thought this game was a really good one. There were so so so many different weird little combo's between the cards that could have changed the game completely.
Regardless, I've really enjoyed this season so far, it's much much much better than season 2 was. Not as good as season 1 though, I don't think they'll ever get that magic back from season 1. That group was just incredibly fun to watch, all of them were great.
Edit: As always Thank you Clefairy for the subs! We love you man!!!!

ep3 + Show Spoiler +Holy shit this game was so boring. Al just stood by the table watching bricks move repetatively. Most boring game by far of all the 3 seasons. Even including the bullshit Donghee one where they cheated and he lost. Even that was more fun.

Jump would be fine if it was part of the loop with Reset or if it could work with Silence, it's supposed to stay in the back and play as a spoiler along with Quick in the race for 2nd. Yongsuk's real problem in the MM was not really allying up with anyone and trying to play by himself, and he screwed himself by being near the front of the pack for the entire game from his first move.
He pointed out his own folly when he chose 20 as the first two moves in the DM, which was also a massive unforced error.
|
+ Show Spoiler +main match was meh, everything was said about it already.
they really love black and white man, after being the dominant deathmatch in season 2 it looks like it's the same in season 3. even though Yongsuk gifted Yeonsung the win by going 20 in the first round (which i think is the absolute worst number you can go) I think Yeonsung played the deathmatch pretty much perfectly. As far as I saw it he didn't make a single mistake, which is pretty impressive in a pressure situation like this.
I hope he and Hyunmin are going to be rivals now and Yeonsung starts being a bit more active in the Main Matches too. He definitely has the potential
|
For the first time the contestants seem interesting enough. And there are enough intelligent people to actually come up with interesting strategies and plays. The contestants of the first season seemed mostly meh (tho some unexpected good players), second I didnt even bother to check but this time...
