After Faulker I needed something a little more straightforward so I'm reading Love in the Time of Cholera along with Sketches From a Hunter's Album(Turgenev).

From the quote I could tell that the book was about politics from a neutral perspective, and rather militant ideals that also link to the politics of a country. The quote was: Show nested quote + Which was surprising to me, because I've always had this idea in my mind; just never thought someone have written a book with similar ideas/philosophy engraved into it as well. (Yes, I know this seems a bit naive of me, to think that no one would've written something along the lines of that idea.)"Rome was destroyed, Greece was destroyed, Persia was destroyed, Spain was destroyed, all great countries were destroyed. How much longer do you really think your own country will last? Forever?"- Joseph Heller, Catch 22 + Show Spoiler + I don't normally read because nothing from today's literature intrigues me, the only books I have ever indulged in would just be the Harry Potter series, and that's when I was still in middle school. I don't find much joy in reading unless the material can really grab me, so looking forward to finding a second book and coming back to this thread for future suggestions. :D You know though that Heller maintained the idea that his books aren't supposed to say anything? So it's kind of ironic, this way, that you find his book intriguing for saying something you've thought of as well. I'd recommend Closing Time afterwards, although every other book he wrote is vastly different in setting, and plot, than C22. (Similar in tone and style but I'm not sure that is what you are looking for.) tnx for your input i'll definitely look into ur suggestion, but im not saying that heller's c22 had any theme of ideals or anything in general as to the whole book. im only indicating that i found his character's display of perspective and thoughts are intriguing. plus i havent read the whole book, so all i could say is idk.

I'm not looking for authors who look into hypnotic regression because there are many issues with it that discredit its value as evidence; I'd much perfer those who investigate cases of these memories occurring naturally in children.

Still, sad to see him go, he did reccommend a lot of good books, apart from all the continental philosophy stuff.

Also thank god for continental philosophy :p As for sam, he certainly is the tl poster who has had the most benefitial influence on me, so I'm obviously sad to see him go. And btw, started something he recommended : ![]() The Cyberiad. First short story is simply hilarious, Lem über alles.

Anyway, bought a book the other day: 50 Dangerous Things (You Should Let Your Children Do) ![]() (also at : http://www.fiftydangerousthings.com/) Essentially, do dangerous stuff with them, go up on the roof, change a tire on the car, throw (specific) stuff in the microwave. It's more or less a nice and humorous checklist of things to do. Also finished the "Uplift war" by David brin. Uplift war ![]() I find Brins' series to be very good actually. None of the books by themselves is spectacular, they might even be somewhat generic or bland, but I find that as a whole he's succeeded in creating a great series. I'm not sure how that holds water, but somehow he's wrote a sci-fi series in the eighties that still has the feel of modern sci-fi, and probably will for a few years still.
