All in all a decent book, however I can't stand cortazar's prose. Maybe it was the translation, but by comparing it with the original(My spanish is decent enough that after reading the work in portuguese one time I can understand the original without a problem) it seems only minor things were changed. I still have hopscotch sitting on my shelf so I'll end up reading it sometime.
Flicky have you studied russian?
Whaaaat :O
I think Hopscotch is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. I couldnt think of greater prose o:
what language did you read it in? if it was in english I would probably understand, gregory rabassa is an amazing translator, but because of the differences between english and spanish it reads quite differently in the original(spanish and portuguese are almost the same language tho, so the translation is 1:1 in most places).
Was supposed to read afternoon, a story by Joyce, but the online links dont work.sigh.
Read Evangeline if you haven't yet. it's my favourite short story by him, the last moments always leave me suffocating.
Now I'm reading a portrait or the artist as young man along with borges' universal history of infamy
Nooooo sam ;( As someone who wasn't ever in the US politics thread he will be dearly missed. They should make him a new account and restrict it so that he is only allowed to post here.
The electric kool-aid acid test
This started out really fucking good, like book of the year good. Then it turned a bit sour and pointless after they reached mexico which is a strange thing to say when the books brilliance lies in being about nothing (or more precise, the unspoken "thing"). It gained some momentum towards the end but it wasn't about what I was looking (baited!) for in the book. I really fail to see how this is a bestseller, it seemed to me that you would have had to have done a bit of homeschooling to appriciate it.
Cyrano de bergerac I'm such a sucker for this pompous fancy prose this was really good. I'm not too knowledgeable about any french history, I just read it as another Shakespeare. It seemed to me that it must have helped modernized many literary tropes.
Still finishing up To the lighthouse and also picked up Stoner.
joyce is a god, a GOD. the way this man writes makes me glad to be alive to appreciate his craft and frightful that I shall never experience moments as sublime as those I did while reading this I don't think there's a word to describe this goddamn book
I almost posted this in all caps, thats how excited I am

This is the natural and proper reaction. Take a deep breath and relax.
I really enjoyed the first book, although I haven't read much by King except IT and Carrie.
In my opinion the first book is the only good one. I read the whole series because I was hoping the books would eventually get better again. But that did not happen, instead they got worse and worse. Really not worth reading except for the first book.

Am I the only one who struggled through the first book in the Dark Tower series? I read it and didn't feel the slightest interest in picking up the second one from the library.
Just about finished with Dune. I am shocked how much I am enjoying this book. Not sure what I want to grab on the next swing through the book stacks.

You're not alone, couldn't even get through the Dark Tower as an audiobook. I'm usually fine with the older stuff Stephen King has written, but that book was uninteresting. I found that perplexing with so many that seems to relish it. Must struck a wrong chord for my taste in some manner.
Dune is a nice book on the other hand, and so is the rest of the series as long as it's stays Frank and not Brian, you should continue reading that.
Iain Banks is awesome, a snippet from "Against a dark background".

I personally thought the first one was fantastic. I loved the writing style.
Now the rest of the series is a different story....

I really need to reread Dune I read it when I was 14 or something and I can't remember anything about the book other than that it was good.
