I just had a dream about the series and lo and behold, I open team liquid and there is a discussion thread about it. ^^

In my dream there was a beautiful flashback sequence with shinichi and ran in a field of flowers somewhere on the mountain side interpersed with scenes of ran meeting someone new that she likes and conan still a child, walking around on the same mountain but now it is cold and desolated.

If you think about it conan's existence is sad, he attracts dead and misery, he never makes any progress and he is constantly hurting the people around him. Ran by not letting her meet someone else and making her cry for him, her father for using him as a puppet to solve cases for him which clearly confuses him, invades his personal image, and gives him undeserved success that might end up his downfall later. Haibara by never telling her anything. You could deem him as the villain of the series in a way.

Anyway, I think that most of the anime-only episodes are only worth watching if you've already exhausted your detective conan supply and are desperate for more. Also, there are issues with the translations. I'm currently going through the manga and "your" is spelled as "you're", there are many bizarre sentences and general spelling problems, it makes me lose faith that I'm getting a high quality translation.

Also, it seems like it's a show directed towards kids, but then there is a character like Haibara whom tries to commit suicide exactly how many times in the series?
Well, now I tell you, I never seen good come o' goodness yet. Him as strikes first is my fancy; dead men don't bite; them's my views--amen, so be it.

You have to be really careful watching this show though. There is a temptation to rush through the seasons only selecting plot relevant episodes about the black organization, but the pacing of the filler and the insistence on maintaining the case-of-the-week format in every single episode is actually a strength of the show. However, since there are anime-original episodes there is a huge increase in filler at some point, which can get pretty annoying. I think that if you ever feel like the show is taking too long you first have to realize that the show lasts for 800+ episodes and the plot isn't finalized yet and secondly that you should start to consider only watching the manga-derived episodes since those tend to be more interesting in terms of characterization and plot. Avoiding burn-out and such. Or just read the manga, since actually the manga is like a direct story board for the anime, which does mean the anime is high quality but also slightly superfluous. I still prefer the latter, since the voice acting is good and it adds something but opinions differ I s'pose. (slightly rambling, sorry )

As I'm a dub only kind of guy, Funimation needs to start dubbing this again. I've been reading the mangas and I need more.

I find the opposite is true in that there were more filler episodes early on but the later episodes the manga only episodes started just branching off into new stories instead of doing pure filler cases. Though in my rewatch I am only watching manga episodes and skipping the non relevant TV only ones because I can go back and watch those after I finish and a lot of them are very very good

Its actually kind of funny how funimation is blocking the subs of an anime they have no intention of ever continuing.

I'm not too worried about burning out and I don't really mind the filler episodes at all. I went through the entirety of Naruto from the beginning to the current episodes in about 4 weeks so I'm also not too worried about overwhelming myself. I watched the 130 english dubbed ones in the past so I'm not quite through all of those episodes yet. Excited about getting to the ones I haven't seen yet.

It is interesting to me how the dub stopped literally at the point where series started picking up steam and started introducing new characters or character development in almost every case.

It has to do with their licensing agreement with the studio.

The fan translations for the anime that I found were sometimes horrible. I think it was noticeable how there were different teams working on the translations since for some there was a lack of English skills. animen00bs fansub team or something, I know I should be appreciative of anyone doing subs but they were just awful.

That's because there was one team that had all the translations done but then they had to pull them so only things left are the second tier ones.

That's the song they always play when Conan takes out several bad guys with his arsenal of weaponry.

I like some of the songs they play at the start, there is one that sounds exactly like Luka by Suzanne Vega which is very pleasant.

to be honest the black silhouette is the best bad guy in the series.

Some of the early conan episodes were quite scary. The one with the guy dressed as an axe-wielding knight trying to murder Ran for one.

Are the movies any good? I never watched any of them since I read they are like alternative universe type, with plot developments that don't reflect the plot progression of the normal episodes.

The movies are fantastic I love 'em :3

They tend to be more fun than the normal episodes cause they're longer and allow more "epic" stories.

I don't think they're considered alternate universe, pretty sure they're canon.

I highly doubt the movies are canon considering some of the developments in them would not make sense as canon but they as a whole follow the story fairly well and are pretty good.
