After searching through the general forum, I notice that there is a lack of Toriko thread. Toriko has slowly become one of my favorite mangas, and it is getting more and more popular in Japan too. Thus, I thought why not create this thread, since there is currently none.
Obviously this thread contains spoilers, so read at your own caution.

i watched the animation when it first aired and i was really taken back to the dragonball days, except toriko was just so awesome. the anime is now not as exciting as the first 20 or so episodes, so i might begin reading to keep up from now on~
the characters, the humor, the absolute craziness... it was like i was a little kid again with how ridiculous the entire show was.
unfortunately, i don't like admitting to being a little kid at heart, so it may be a manga that i read in secret :>!

For the 4 heavenly kings, Sani is my favorite, cus he is bea'tiful, and you're GROAAAAAAHSSSSSSSSS!!
+ Show Spoiler +That was unfunny, but given the latest chapter sani does scream that and his anger is the best in this manga, toriko is a bit too... "timid" in that like coco he is a nice guy but he is not nearly as reserved as coco is, he is just the over all good guy which can make him boring from time to time
Really cool manga, I would definitly recommend it for laughter and hunger inducing moments!

TBH though im a bit concerned with how massive a power up the 4 guys got and how absolutely they crushed the 4 saint beasts despite it being not that long ago Toriko and Zebura struggled agaisnt the Salamander Sphinx

I liked this manga for the first few story arcs when it came out but eventually I had to give up on it as seems the author developed ADD and every arc was 2-3 chapters and really just not interesting. Everything is suddenly super strong and it makes the beginning seem like a sham. This is coming from someone who didn't mind the transition from Dragonball to Dragonball Z.
Also, the anime was REALLY badly made. They skipped half the scenes and it felt so rushed, it was ridiculously bad; and I'm talking about arcs I liked in the manga. Almost as bad as what they did to Hunter X Hunter's anime remake.

Well Kurr you shouldn't really expect much from anime adaptations.. Manga is one thing anime usually is not done by the same author and has alot more fillers etc..
This manga is cool, funny and diferent! It's amazing to see the authors imagination.. Don't take it to seriously!
In the end the hero is always a strong, spiky hair, eat allot good guy, that fights for his friends and don't really like girls! That's a shonnen manga for you!
This arc is just to show off their new powers while the war for GOD doesn't start..

im worried that the power ups were too crazy since Ichiryuu said that Toriko was almsot strong enough to enter the Gourmet World but needed to be able to adapt to numerous environments first
about the short arcs, i kinda think of this manga sort of like a gag manga like Gintama, theres a main plot but between the main arcs (like Ice Hell, gourmet Pyramid e.t.c) there are short one or two chapter arcs that are just for the laughs and dont affect the main plot (though in Toriko instead of laughs its for showing cool foods)

+ Show Spoiler + looking good so far IMO they got beat around a good bit in this chapter but the things capture level 300 so id be worried if they could hold there own going at it one at a time like that hope they dont focus too much on the cooks making the food in the following chapters really want to see this fight, wonder if well see the fry punch guy and knocking JR fight at all

I think the next chapter we will see the first time all 4 of them cooperate. It would be quite interesting since the 4 have very different fighting style.

Heys guys I was considering to start reading the manga but im kinda disapointed by shounen lately . I love OP and HxH and started to hate even more Naruto, Fairy Tail and Bleach lately.

Toriko starts slow just like OP and HxH, so hang in there - it's worth it

Komatsu is the 2nd biggest character in the story - he's not just a sidekick, he's a semi-protagonist. The manga may as well be named Toriko&Komatsu

I'm curious if Komatsu will find some great secret ingredient that now one else sees under the whole pile, or if he will just make a great meal out of low class ingredients. I can see him getting praised by the 3rd rank cook since only Komatsu and him will be at the beach by the time Komatsu done swimming.

My guess is him making something godly out of scraps.

Sounds about right
He struggles to get ingredients, is left over with poor things and has to make do with them
However, with his food genius/love, he finds one miraculous ingredient to save him

even if its not the best class ingredients i would say hed be able to make a better dish then 50 other chefs, and get into the top
the organizers probably have hidden some special ingredients taht dont look that great but are actually amazing

Thought the manga was awesome, and was dissapointed when I saw critics trash it and give it terrible ratings.
Surprised its been this long for a thread to come up, I'm glad that people who actually enjoy reading manga like it and that I'm not alone.

Well at least now the critics have changed their mind . Toriko currently has one of the highest rating for a Shonnen ( about top 5, or is it 10 :/ )

You have to admit it doesn't really push the boundaries of art, character development, etc. within the shounen genre though... I just like it because of the refreshing and usually hilarious theme of everything being food related instead of generic monsters/powers but you can't really call it one of the best.

i hate fights in other mangas where half the time both sides look they got a couple scrapes and then get a few bandaids and it all worked out in Toriko both sides look they go through a meat grinder it looks like an actual fight to the death where both sides only care about killing the other ^.^
also surprised Tommy is dead O.O thought he would continue to be a recurring villain glad the author isnt afraid to kill people off

Well, when you get beaten twice, first by the he protagonist then by the sidekick, you become irrelevant as a villain. Either that or he would have been killed by his own boss anyway.

Toriko did not beat Tommy, he would've been killed if Teppei hadn't intervened. And Sani is not a sidekick by any means. The 4 heavenly kings, with the exception of Zebra are pretty much always kept relatively equal in terms of strength (Zebra being ahead of them). Yes, Toriko is the protagonist, but it's like with One Piece, Luffy is the protagonist, but Zoro isn't a sidekick.

As I understand it, imaru taught him the Pre-Shot Routine, which is essentially repeatedly doing the technique in your mind until you can see the way to do it flawlessly, thus performing the attack without wasted power. The Ultimate Routine is a step above that, where you must imagine the path to victory which subconsciously increases your power and technique due to your confidence and concentration. In essence, though, it is a vaguely explained Shonen powerup.

What system? The lack of a system is what makes this AWESOME and unique, every fight is unique, toriko vs tommy, different, toriko and zebra vs pyramid, vs the nitro, vs different monsters vs environments.

If you follow hunterxhunter the nen system works very well with the world of toriko (hell hxh even has gourmet hunters as seen in the hunter exam) the following explains their powers in hxh terms. may contain spoilers for hxh (including manga)
Essentially everyone has a form of energy to project and use as their power this can manifest itself in different ways, in the beginning toriko uses the energy to reinforce his blows, eventually emitting the energy as ranged attacks, now hes transforming the energy into steel. To contrast Coco uses his energy to transmute into poison, able to emit it and eventually then reinforcing it for armor, the opposite progression from Toriko. Zebra's energy manifests as sound and shows emission, transformation properties.
Sani's feelers seems to be that a of a specialist he conjures more and manipulates it.
In the world of toriko I believe this energy is called "appetite energy" which the 4 kings used to defeat the 4 beast.
I actually have a crazy theory that the world of toriko is the future of hxh, in which hxh was the events of the war that God stopped. The world map is the same (human world surrounded by the unknown world) even the food hunters are equivalent and the energy system feels the same as described above. Hell the hxh world even has a mechanism to create new creatures and hybrids through the chimera ants, not too much a stretch to imagine the crazy creatures from toriko can exist in a world that contains chimeras.

food immersion as in eating a lot of food and gathering/condensing their essence into the body similar to how the chimeras power up. half of the arc was about how the queen had to eat enough and the other half was about the king eating enough "good food"
pressure: remember the pressure felt when they first went into the upper levels of battle tower, or killua's instinctive flight response when he met pitou, expelling nen/aura/killing intent is pretty prevalent in most shonens.
routine=conditions to power up moves, similar to how gon must scream and pose to do his janken, routines are the restrictions put on moves to power up, supreme routine's conditions looks like a perfect mental picture of the move in mind, so the detriment seems to be required mental clarity.
I do agree, its a crazy stretch, but I keep looking at the two and thinking about the similarities, and the nen system explains their powers/abilities really well. I feel they could easily be the same universe, just at different timelines, which came first can be up for debate but I feel that acacia was a lone gourmet hunter that started the gourmet age, triggering a flood of hunters focused on food.

its a metaphorical fork with a physical form he makes actual forks out of his energy that have real physical shape but he can dematerialize them at will
the exception is when hes doing a melee fork attack at taht time there is no fork and hes just hardening his hand

Well he does not look super friendly. The four beast is a revived beast, and it has been said that only the legendary saiseiya Mohyan Shaishai could have revived the four beast. After the four beast incident, Teppei was last seen trying to find Mohyan Shaishai. Maybe he found him and he happened to be with Joa or be himself Joa?

Yeah I know right. The badass level of characters kept increasing rapidly in a few chapters but I do not find it awkward or weird at all because it's quite consistent with what the author has told us all along. The characters just haven't had the chance to show it, until now.
Also I love Toriko style of face drawing. From Zebra, to Ichiryuu, to Setsuno, and now Jirou. They are all so fuckin epic.

we havent seen Zebura really trying to break out, and he didnt really do much to Setsuno he only grabbed her legs
he was able to deal with Tommyrod fairly easily so hes a level above the sous chefs and the 4 kings but hes still a couple levels below the real heavywieghts like biotope Zero

I guess before meeting Acacia, Jirou was somewhat like Zebra. Extremely powerful in raw strength, wild a reckless, so his ingredients were likely to be disintegrated too much to be cooked. Then Acacia teacher him knocking, which allowed Jirou to use the gigantic power without destroying everything.

Might not be really frohze, eyes are different and cracked skin indicates to me a bodysnatcher or if hes taking a hint from naruto, a resurrection technique, given his attacks so far (changing flavor, resurrection UP) both of these sounds more likely than it being Frozhe. I feel like we might be getting to the chekov's gun shown in the meteor garlic arc where Toriko is interested in a memory stored in the casino. Maybe if memories can be preserved and stored...why not a whole person? perhaps, memories of not just food but also of techniques and personalities can be stored as well so joa can download and use frozhe's techniques long after she's died.

also, if you're right it sounds like Joa will barely be defeated by Jirou and then he will take over Jirous body instead, which would make sense cus then each of Acacia's disciples are on the sides of IGO, bishokukai and NEO.
On the other hand, Joa is kinda hyped to be similar to those 3 regardless, especially if he beats / stands even with Jirou

Wow, that was so epic. I think Jirou's appearance is akin to Shanks appearance during Marineford arc. Nobody can't do a thing against Jirou or Joa and I don't think they will seriously fight each other at this point of the story. Hopefully a little skirmish (that may blow the whole island still) but then they will probably talk to wrap it up and move the plot forward. On her way out, Joa might kidnap Komatsu though.
I have a feeling Greenpatch is part of Joa's group and that's why he (probably) hasn't killed Coco. After all, some NEO guys said they have people in the bishokukai, I am curious to find out who.

On that note, it is worth mentioning that the planet they live on (don't know what they call it, may be Earth), is much, much larger than our Earth. It is mentioned that in "human world" there lives 30 billion humans (or is it 300 billion? Something like that), and that is just a little piece of the planet. I think at their prime the 3 strongest were Ichiryuu, Jirou and Midora in that order, based on their order of being Acacia's disciples and the scared apple levels arc. But we all know only Midora keeps his prime form while others retired.
However I think each of the 3 of them was best at different things and Acacia taught them accordingly. Like Jirou was the strongest in raw strength and Acacia taught him knocking. Midora might be fastest and Ichiryuu had the most amount of energy stored or sth.

Also now there are 3 sides in the manga. Neo is a monster with Joa being quite overpowered right now. Bishokukai is also has the strongest character in the whole manga currently in addition with this new power-up Starjun. And Igo side is in terrible shape right now. Their president was defeated. Is he still alive ? Komatsu is gone. Coco is no where to be seen. Mansam is most likely the new Igo president as stated but Shige pwned him quite hard. With this new power, Starjun was not even afraid of Joa, so I think no one in Igo can stand up to him right now ( not counted Jirou, but do we even consider Jirou as Igo ? )

Exactly my sentiment. But I doubt either Coco or Ichiryu are dead so we'll see more of them hopefully. Jirou is not IGO but that might change now given the circumstances

Midora is strong but there second tier members arent as strong, aside from Chiyo they dont seem to have anyone on 0th level but head chef and head waiter

I feel like a bunch of the latest chapters have just been fillers though, like listing all the battles in 1 issue, or how when they started the chef tournament 1 chapter was just listing a bunch of chefs, many of who ended up not being part of the plot at all.

the 4 kings were raised as chain beasts fighting in the Colloseum so there probably all clones grown from birth with gourmet cells
Zebra has his ripped cheek, so i think that the 4 kings fought something early on kinda like how they fought the 4 beast and that thing they fought gave Toriko those scars and slashed Zeburas cheek

i didn't mean to imply the scar was genetic (mainly cause i dont know is Midora's are actual scars), im saying that both characters are drawn like that intentionally because i think there blood relatives. well looking at Ichiryuu then and looking at Coco now there might be a bit of a similarity
so then Sani would be Acacia, Coco would be Ichiryuu, Zebura would be Jirou and Toriko would be Midora IChiryuu may have taken some DNA from each and grown a new clone, that would explain why Sani seems farther ahead in controlling his gourmet cells

I always though that the missing National treasure dude was behind joa and NEO. I thought for a while that he had revived Frohze similarly to the four beast etc and merged their cells together to become Joa. Just my stupid idea though.

Ever since they tried to make Starjun (I can never spell that guys name) look a little lost and real, and after the Midora flash backs, I think definitely Joa and co are appearing as the main antagonists.
I like the little introduction of how the eight beasts work. Since the four beast destruction, I was really worried that it would just be humans vs humans forever even after all the interesting creature designs.
Ichiryuu's mention of seeds is interesting. His full course is a more interesting mystery than Acacia's for me.

Midora doesnt seem too interested in the day to day runnings of his organization (has to ask wiater how many are ready for GW) so they probably dont let him know how many spies and traitors they unearth

Good Chapter for info. Still can't wait for the continuation of the Midora/Ichi story. I really want to find out how Jirou and joa relate to Midora in power as imo Midora seems to be ahead of the pack in that case. I felt as though Jirou was always the strongest of the three and (above Ichi) was more likely to be = to Midora but I'm not sure if Joa is actually a match for them. Midora defintatly seems to be the strongest in the verse so far imo but lacks the information people like ichi and joa have to complete crush the oppostion and achieve his goals.

Toriko has set everything up so far with the premise that everything is food. The origin story for the world seems to be one where even the planet itself was seasoned and prepared as an ingredient. Just a question as to what entity/alien race is going around preparing whole planets in that fashion, and how they inevitably go about consuming the planets they prepare.

Though I expect Ichi to have not shown all of his abilities, Midora should be stronger imo given hes alot bigger and has been eating the highest quality food from both the human and gourmet world. Plus It's kinda boring when the old leader guy is killed despite being the strongest for no reason.

they both said as much during there fight though i think Ichi was trying to find a way to connect to Midora, if it wasnt for the nitro he and Ichi would have completed there heart to heart and maybe teamed up to destroy Neo
or maybe he decided he wouldnt be able to do what it would take to stop Neo so had to entrust his will to Midora? if Acacia is the final boss Ichi may have felt he couldnt fight him and entrusted Midora with that

After rereading that page, the wording somehow lead me to believe that the "8 Kings" refer to both the 8 strongest species and also the strongest individual of that species in certain era. 'King Dragon" might be one of the king specie, as like "Battle Wolf" and "King Snake" of Sunny most likely. Derous was the strongest ( or the only of his specie ? ), as such can be considered a King. His dragon descendant ( likely the only one/strongest too ) is also a King by consideration. The battle wolf just show in the last chapter is a Battle Wolf, but unlike Terry, he's probably the strongest of the specie in the Gourmet World, so is considered a King.
Just my 2c though.

Huh. I just noticed that the second most powerful beast shown in chp. 263, the capture level 4.2k Ashurasaurus is on Knocking Master Jirou's full course. I guess that really puts into perspective how absurdly strong Acacia's three disciples are.

I saw bits and scraps over the internet but dismissed it as stupid because of the food theme, but after reading ~20/30 chapters I got hooked and plowed through 286 in 2 days! This is now my 2nd favourite manga in weekly serialisation.

I think it was a momentary power up because of Komatsu being hit. I don't think the other 3 will lack behind, they all got their power up around the same time every time and now it's just because Toriko ate Air, but I'm pretty sure Zebra & co will also get their power up with God soon.

I love this manga, it's my favourite by far. Always makes me smile, a storyline that makes sense (even if it is sometimes predictable), detailed drawings (take that Bleach) and huge scenery. New monsters, identifiable and good-looking fights. If only a new chapter was released every day :/

It is indeed a highly enjoyable manga compared to bleach and naruto. Also that must be the first female nitro that we see right? I like how the writer develops/expands everything in this manga with a reasonable amount of effort, nitros at the very beginning were so different from what we know now.

The mangaka is japanese, I highly doubt he knows italian or cares well enough to have had thoughts about bambina's gender. He probably just liked the name.
It reminds me of Katekyo Hitman Reborn, which was full of italian names and they were mostly terrible, wrong and out of place. Also Bambina looks more male than female so far.

Also the money king being on clevel of 6000 is a bit surprising. The big bad battle wolf had a clevel of 6090 which would make them fairly well-matched. I guess all of the 8 kings have similar levels so they don't out-right kill each other off, but a difference of ~100 at those levels seems insignificant.
Btw anyone remember at what levels Toriko & co. are after the timeskip? ~1000s? ~2000s?
K so in chapter 275 Toriko says he can intimidate creatures of clevel 500/600 so he's definitely up there. Zebra being 2nd strongest probably also. Coco and hair-dude might be lagging behind a bit.

I guess all of the 8 kings have similar levels so they don't out-right kill each other off, but a difference of ~100 at those levels seems insignificant.
Btw anyone remember at what levels Toriko & co. are after the timeskip? ~1000s? ~2000s?
They just handled a 1.4k monkey instructor pretty easily so 2k sounds about right I think.

I'm still puzzled how much trouble the simple apes gave them (Magikarp uses "Enbu" - No effect!), yet they easily beat the boss of the area very fast. He couldn't have been that much higher than the small apes, so why would so many small apes kill themselves in fear of the boss of the area if he isn't even much stronger than a few, let alone thousands of them?

they were having trouble in that they couldnt take them out very fast i dont think any of them actually got injured at all and they wouldnt use there big mvoes against weaklings anyway

Most likely because capture levels does not have a linar progrssion.
I.e. a capture level 20 monster is probably not twice as strong as a capture level 10 monster.
We also know that capture levels are not only dependant on strenght levels, as seen with the puffer whale and shining gourami fish.

Adapting their bodies to a high gravity environment is cool and all, but they're about to go toe to toe with someone that uses entire mountains as skipping stones (that he throws around the entire damn world).
At least the planet isn't set to explode in 5 minutes, though I wouldn't be surprised if something like that happens eventually given what we've been told about the planet's internal composition and why the human world is different from gourmet world.

There are two types of PAIR, the ones from the tree, and the real ones from the monkey king. Nitro does not know how to get the real PAIR. However, we have no clue as to what the normal PAIR taste's like or even if the Nitro want it.

One theory out there is that pair is an magical orb that let one see/interact with the underworld ( soul and stuff ), as the author said, it's "A drop of two sides of the same coin". Hence even in coma, Komatsu can help Toriko and female ex-Bambina can be seen by the Monkey King even though she's most likely dead by unknown cause.

I don't think Kaka is going down so easily though ( even though I would love to see her get rekt ), as Blue Nitro was hyped to be even stronger than the 3 Acacia disciples.

i think pair is just an extreme cure water (when purely talking about healing properties) so someone who is truly dead cant be revived with pair, unlike Komatsu who was only mostly dead, youd need the hors to revive someone dead dead

So the whale king is literally a moon with a tail and fins, that's interesting. Not that really hyped about sky deer since it's a bit similar to the horse king but still it's pretty cool. Dragon king's the only one that has yet to be oficially revealed.

I feel the manga is going pretty fast even by Toriko standard though.

Apparently Acacia isn't even the bad guy himself, he was just goated into being the vessel of resurrecting the demon, which first has to become full form before it can be destroyed once and for all. At least according to the Nitro Jirou is talking to.
But before the demon is fully resurrected, he is probably gonna eat the world, which some parties involved may have a problem with.
Since day 1 this manga has been my favourite delicious story, hardly anything you could call a filler arc, the story progresses fast enough you always smile when you think about the next chapter coming out.

Jirou is deadman walking with the fact that he intent to take on all the Blue Nitro and Acacia subsequently. If he succeed then the story goes nowhere. So he would likely fail & die somehow.
Which is a damn shame since I really like his character design. Badass mofo.

Anyone knows what's Toriko popularity among Shonen Jump atm?
I feel the author tried very hard to pick up the hype the last 5 chapters or so (since we switched away from Blue Grill) but it wasn't working; and he just fucked it and try to end thing as fast as possible so we can have an ending to the storyline before the Manga got shafted.
Which is a damn shame because there's still so many things to come like the Gourmet eclipse and the space arc. Lameee
Edit: just check, Toriko is hovering at the lower half of the middle pack of the weekly Jump popularity (7 or 8). Doesn't look too bad, not sure why the manga is in danger of getting cut :/

Honestly Toriko is the manga i look forward to reading to most each week. If it truly is being forced to end quickly and the recent events aren't just going to be covered via flashback i might just stop reading.
We know Toriko has untold potential but watching him get truly destroyed by the Horse king with a little breath and then having bambina show himself capable of killing the 4hk several (maybe hundred or thousand) times over before they could react to then having toriko actually fight an 8 king honestly feels like too much, which i understand if he needs to cut a lot out.
Then the whole shit with Midora claiming toriko could actually hurt him (LMFAO). I honestly couldn't take it seriously.
I fully understand the hype behind Torikos individual powers but i don't think anyone can argue this is how it was meant to develop. If this manga is coming to an exceptionally quick end then that would be tragic as i feel this could be an incredible story but oh well .

I disagree. While the pacing and certain choices the author has made are certainly criticizable, it was in fact the natural progression that is expected. What makes a story good is that they end or progress. You can't have one theme continuing on forever -however original and entertaining it is- as for every Forikorder who would want that, there would be 10 times more people thinking the storytelling has become stale.

I'm surprised that Toriko isn't doing well as I enjoy the manga quite a lot.
I guess it is difficult for any manga to have the "perfect" length or pacing given that different readers will have their own view on what is perfect.
For me at least, whilst I feel like the plot is being rushed now, at least the story is developing and I am hoping that the manga will end on a high. After the drawn-out end to Naruto (and let's not even talk about Bleach), it's not too bad if Toriko finishes with me wishing that it went on for a bit longer.

That's weird, Toriko is always at worst in the middle of the ranking in the WSJ, at best in the top5.
It's always ahead of Bleach or even World Trigger so I kinda fear for WT right now since I enjoy it too a lot.

I wonder if toriko would've been more popular if ufotable did the anime, their 1 episode ova is better than everything toei produced. Maybe with a better anime it would have had bigger sales.

theres no good fights because either A) all 4hk just gang rape the target or B) its something even all 4 of them cant touch and theres no good plots because it always Komatsu solving the problem though intuition
i would have preffered toriko and komatsu just leveling up by themselves and exploring the gourmet world on there own and they cant explore it cause the world ending in a month

Well, there is quite the time skip in between, if I understand correctly the time goes faster inside the shell or something like that (2 days = an hour in the outside world, so imagine how much time passed inside the shell when 3 weeks pased on the outside). So the cooking contest ended and don slime plans on reviving the old man. Which is probably gonna go like "hey ichiryu we'll revive you" - "no thanks now the next generation is responsible for the sake of the world I'm done here", at which point Don Slime is getting seriously pissed off. Or, even more likely, one of the appetite things that Neo send out landed where they prepared the cooking to revive Ichi and prevented it, so now Don Slime is out on revenge. Which I'm a bit sad about, because to me it would be much cooler if the only gourmet demon that was claimed to have a chance fighting Neo didn't get involved just to hype up the strength of Neo even more before Toriko steps in.
