AFAIK there's no physical charactaristic; you don' nkow they can bend until you see them bend.
Honestly I don't think the writers thought of it as a gene thing. Theres probably no science behind it. Its all 'spiritual' or some shit.
Also I'm pretty sure Katara's mother was a water bender.
For Aang, he can't be half non-bender; all Air Nomands were air benders.
Actually I believe Katara's mother wasn't a waterbender. She lied to protect the last waterbender remaining in the Southern water tribe(Katara) which is why she was killed.

Nice, didn't know about that chart, thanks! But isn't it weird that Kya and Bumi have much different skin color than Tenzin? And other away around (unless maybe they lived in opposite sides of the world to get tanned/paled?)

Yeah It is sort of weird they wouldn't all be some sort of mix half/half. Its pretty easy to explain it away by just saying 2 inherited their skin from Katara and 2 inherited from Aang. Seeing as its 1 waterbender, 1 airbender, and 1 non-bender it sort of makes sense that those types of genes can get split up, at least for this case anyway.

I gotta say, the fights in this series so far have been incredibly well done, especially the big one at the end of tonight's episode. Things are starting to get really interesting, too. Glad this series is shaking out so well :D

Oh, so I guess it's not Bumi. I was thinking, why would they design 2 characters for nothing? Though, they might show up later (Kya and Bumi).
Seems like Amon probably isn't that old though (if he was the guy shown in the flashbacks, he would be like 70-90). Perhaps his son? Or maybe that is the guy who led to (or is the murderer) the firebenders killing Mako/BoLin's parents and scarring Amon's face. Maybe there was an agni kai for something?

Wasn't there a whole thing where Aang whopped up on some firebender that was causing trouble in republic city? Named Haakon or something?

really wish that korra had some sort of spiritaul connection, without it she apparently cant go into the avatar state. I mean there have been multiple points in the series, especially in this episode in which i thought it would activate but it never did lol. The only realy spiritual connection she has are those flashbacks o.o
also did anyone notice the old guy's dress in the flashback, kinda looks like a dai li style suit?
Also while it would be funny if amon was the cabbage man's son, i highly doubt the creators would take such a path because it would just make it a big joke lol

They said it was a firebender? Hm that's interesting then. Since we saw the full character (in the flashback i mean, who is probably that firebender...), perhaps we'll learn a lot more background story later. Or perhaps, instead of focusing on the kinds of spiritual connections aang had (with roku), korra will get flashbacks? I wonder why though, she is getting these flashbacks. I can't figure out a reason why she did but we didn't see Aang get any. Also, the benders in the intro to the show are all Avatars, unlike in TLA where they were just really good benders. Perhaps there will be a greater focus on the flashbacks/previous avatars more later on?
