First and foremost, they changed things in the intro! When was the last time, in season 2?
Getting a canon version of the big historical events is cool, and made the episodes surprisingly heavy on the drama. Overall the whole thing was paced superbly and more or less shoot down any concerns of Twilight's ascension having an effect on the friendship dynamic of the show. And they laid down an overarching plot for the entire season!
Ten out of ten, would watch again.

the episodes weren't ERMAGHARD AMAZING, but they were incredibly cool. So much awesome worldbuilding happened, even though they weren't as epic as I might've thought they'd be. I'm not disappointed, though, because it's so much fun to learn how the "godly" aspects of Equestria work. To be honest, this opener was a far better decision than introducing another crappy villain. Also, pretty much all of the major spoilers that I accidentally saw (Nightmare Moon's "return") all happened here, so I'm almost completely clueless about the remaining episodes. Very awesome start. Finally.

does anyone understand why when twilight drank the potion and hallucinated the past that somehow luna saw and acknowledged her? what was goin gon there? i don't understand it and i'm forced to believe it was due to some kind of laziness

I think it was Luna noticing/acknowledging Celestia, who Twilight and the camera hadn't noticed. I think it was put there (kind of awkwardly) so that the audience didn't know within the first five or so seconds that twilight was living the past. It had just been described as an elixir that would show her what was going on.

The only other option I can see is the (possible) fact that the elixir was making twilight dream or something close to dreaming, and since Luna has the ability (and responsibility) to check in on ponies' dreams then she could have been aware of Twilight

I liked the episode. I liked the way that they didn't introduce a new antagonist, and it also made Discord look a bit smarter.

I also think we'll see some interesting fanfiction, as well as episodes, now that "Just use the Elements of Harmony" is no longer an option. Though it's possible the Elements can be briefly removed by the tree and then returned.

Or a new toy to play with RIGHT NOW. After all, we don't need to wait for them to TELL us what's in the box...

Hell, I already have an idea for a one-shot fic, that involves a ton of references to extremely dangerous past adventures where they finally found the six Keys of Harmony. And what do they find when they open the box? A cryptic note that tells them to go to a certain place in the middle of Manehattan, to a mysterious monument that has been declared a heritage site for unknown reasons for over a millenium. At this point, they get pranked in a public and highly embarassing fashion. Trollestia at it's finest.

The reason it's Manehattan is that I'm pretty sure Canterlot wasn't a thing when the capital of Equestria was in the middle of the Everfree. Even in a comedy fic I manage to think of these things.

I think we are going to see much more of her if they put her in the intro now, also she DID get quite a bit of screen time this episode! maybe not too many lines, but people must HAVE been fan-gasming all over the internet when those flash back scenes started

I felt a great disturbance in the fanfic community, as if millions of origin stories suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

Kind of what I was thinking, since Celestia and Luna originally ruled from inside the Everfree. Maybe after Celestia banished Luna she just peaced out and then the forest grew all crazy like or something though.

Nightmare Moon and Discord? Yes please. Also Applejack kicked ass, which I always appreciated since she tends to be less popular. Neutral Discord was perfect. He's no hero and he still enjoys chaos. I can't complain. He still has his Q mannerisms.
