SPOILER WARNING If you only watch the show, this thread will spoil you of future events in HBO's Game of Thrones. Thread contains discussion of all books of the series A Song of Ice and FireClick Here for the spoiler-free thread. |
So I just read a theory that made intense sense to me.
The last time they were around, the Others lost, that much is clear I think. They proceeded to retreat to the North, and then the Wall was created.
Now, the wall is a structure made of ice, which is kind of odd when you think about it. Humans don't really do ice constructions, and not on that scale. Moreover, why would you create a wall of ice to repell ice creatures? That doesn't seem to make a ton of sense. Why would the wall be an obstacle to the Others?
The theory is that the Others built the wall, to protect their retreat after losing the last war. It is an element of protection against humanity, not for it.
Theory went into a lot more details but it was a lot of conjecture, that part was the most convincing to me. Also there was the idea that Starks were originally on the side of the Others, but I didn't need convincing for this as I've been thinking that for a while now.

What a waste of Rorge & Biter. Why even bother bringing them back for weak deaths like that? No biting off Brienne's face?
|
Damn I wanted Only Cat.
Guys, Brienne + Pod don't know about Arya in the books do they? My memory is fuzzy.
|
All these Arya+Hound scenes are getting predictable, repetetive and boring imo, and Podrick and Brienne seems to be building up thowards the exact same formula except reversed.
|
Did they meet up with hot pie in the books? I don't recall that either.
Now I wonder who they'll blame Lysa's death on. There's no singer this time around.
|
I actually developed a crazy theory in my idea, from watching this episode. What if Jon Arryn found out about Littlefinger + Lysa Arryn = Robin Arryn? (The seed is strong). And that actually developed to the whole story?

ugh the Lysa scene was very disappointing. Not as much build up as I had hoped and no "Only Cat". Even the fall was kind of lame. I loved in the book how she didn't scream, it gave the moment that much more power. This was almost cartoonishly funny. No Marillion either?! The most badass way to end this would've been "This singer's killed my lady wife"...missed opportunity.
Also, this is what seems like a pretty weak ass way for the Hound to go out. I figured he'd get into another scuffle. Seems a bit off that he'd be ambushed by two low-skilled bandits. One of which Arya even killed quite easily..
On the other hand the scenes with Bronn and Oberyn were done to total perfection. Overall, still an excellent ep imo.
Sucks having to now wait 2 weeks for what's probably the most anticipated episode of the season (it's certainly mine) ><

No, Brienne and Pod are way off from anything that happened in the books. That Pod has found his way into squiring for her is about as close to the books as either of them has been since bear pits and spears in the head.
I'm curious what the hell the mountain was supposed to be doing. They empty out the prisons to let him randomly rip people apart? 'King's Landing Law and Punishment Special Offer: All executions are on house Clegane, he's here all week! Related: All crimes are punishable by death this week.' I don't think there is much excuse for that scene.
Oberyn and Tyrion was the high point I think. It put together three of the things that tend to go with the best scenes of late. Tyrion, Oberyn, and close to the book.
Everything that happens in Tyrion's cell has been awesome, the Bronn and Tyrion was another very good one that was also very close to the book.

Lysa scene could have been done better. Should have been done better, I don't know how they did so poorly when it could have been almost directly adapted from the books.
Interesting turn with Hot Pie, I guess it's to cut down on their wanderings.
I guess the bread will become important in the Lady Stoneheart meeting.

Agreed, with the Lysa death scene they could very easily have had another strong one with a couple tweaks to stick closer to the books. The threw it away.

Yep, that scene was horrible. I had no problem with the "Only Cat" vs "Your Sister" line change, as it really makes no difference at the end of the day, but I'm sure there's butthurt bookreaders on various forums complaining about it right now.

Also, no seizure scene. They should have cut the naked Melisandre scene and put more into Robin seizure time, as it becomes plot-critical in AFFC.

"Only Cat" is a minor loss. No Mirallion is a plot hole and a big loss. They didn't even attempt to cover for it with perhaps a throw away line about how LF had been meeting and making arrangements with various lords of the Vale. Something, anything, to give him other political footholds and rationalize how this doesn't instantly ruin his plans in the Vale.
|
I think that the show writers are good at making dialogue but a lot of their added plots have fallen flat for me this season. The way Rorge died and the way the mountain was introduced felt really weak.
I thought all the scenes with Tyrion were pretty great though. Especially the scene with Oberyn. I'll be sad to see such a good character leave the show so soon but he won't end up overstaying his welcome either.
|
The scene was also rushed, with little buildup. Transition between angry Lysa and crazy Lysa took less than thirty seconds.
Book Petyr would never be stupid enough to murder someone without a ready alibi and scapegoat. Or explain his philosophy and motives to anyone playing the game of thrones, but that's a different discussion.

Isn't Mirallion already dead in the TV series? I thought he was the one who sang the joke song about Joffrey to Joffrey in court

@Steveling in the other thread:
I feel your pain, man. Sorry to say, but when I saw someone defending Stannis in the other thread, I figured it had to be a book reader. The fact is, Show!Stannis is not a likeable character by a large margin. He has virtually no redeemable qualities.
We'll need to deal with it. I've come to accept him as a totally different character, borderline evil. I'm even seriously doubting any hope of redemption through the Battle of the Wall.
This doesn't mean that I am one of those blind Stannis followers, as he's done some very wretched things. When it comes down to it, it's true that his intent of fighting Renly's army was stupid, and Stannis may be stubborn but he's not stupid. He had to know about the Shadow Baby, otherwise it's completely out of character.
Anyway... Leave it be, Steveling, Show!Stannis is doomed! Perhaps you'll get a come back after episode 9...

He lost his tongue. He was role merged with someone who in the books had been a random KL singer in that regard. Way back in season 1 it seemed like a reasonable part of the setup for his eventual role as the scapegoat for Lysa's death. Make him mute to help rationalize how he couldn't tell a convincing story when LF accuses him. Now LF's story is....she slipped? And nobody heard the yelling despite the doors being perfectly open? And everyone is ok with an upjumped minor lord acting as lord protector of the Vale after a hasty wedding and 'mysterious' death of the lady of the Vale?
I guess the show has never explained how very minor house Baelish is, so that helps in a way. They only referred to it as minor relative to Tullys, and minor relative to lords paramount leaves a lot of room. They didn't explain that it is just a three generation old household stemming from a lightly landed knight.
I guess they will rework the lords of the Vale to be more antagonistic to Lysa and happy to see her gone while less apprehensive towards LF in the first place, then quickly introduce those deals LF makes to endear himself to their interests and/or set them against one another and pretend it works out.
