On a side note, i'm kinda releaved and sad we won't see the mountain slice up vargo. No, they said the Ironborn were holding it and they had to smuggle themselves in. It's still a divergence on Roose's part (I think), but the Ironborn are where they're supposed to be.

The book that Tyrion gave Joffrey was the only one of its kind or something, right? I think that was mentioned in the books but I haven't read them for years. They didn't mention anything about it in the show because I guess it's not an important detail.

This bothered me as well. In the show they didn't do nearly enough to indicate that the book is really a rather fine gift and how most at the table disapprove of him chopping it in half. I don't know why it bothered me, given how minor an event it is, but I always felt that scene was the most powerful leading up to his death to remind everyone just how much of a douche he is.

yeah ofc, but i cant imagine that they wont show her at moat cailin after her big exit last season - but when i think about it the hole story about the iron islands is different/not shown. lets see how it will play out

Needs to be done by hand, and not many ppl can read!

+ Show Spoiler +
I really hope they'll at least give Stannis some positive showing when the battle at the Wall happens...
He's not a saint but D&D make him out as incredibly evil.

Copying a book was a full time occupation back in the days (usually done by priests), since they had to literally write the entire book again. And since back then it was more of an art form, it was very important that the calligraphy was done well. And it's not like you had an eraser if you made a typo.
So, basically, copying a book was seriously hard (and tedious) work back then.

Stannis is awesome in the books because you can genuinely see him change and progress from the overly rigid man he is when he is introduced. He is by no means a totally different man, but he has improved, and represents a very interesting character.
Also, he gets so many badass lines that you just have to like him.
I'm hoping D&D have been exaggerating the villain side of Stannis to make the Battle at Castle Black even more impressive, and a bigger turning point for the character... But I'm not very hopeful.

just sayin, if some book are rarer than others and all books are written tediously, why not squeeze in one of the rare books to be copied instead of acting as if nothing can be done. if quality is issue, i think tyrion would agree content/story/words matters more than decoration and whatnot.

Stannis is one of the most interesting characters in the book to me simply because he is so damn complicated I honestly do not know how to feel about him.
Most characters at the end of ADWD I already have an opinion on. Stannis I still do not. I'm rooting for him because he's currently fighting the Boltons (seriously FUCK the Boltons) and he actually has a sense of justice even if its over the line sometimes.
But then he's also fucking rigid and pompous to the point where I feel like he undermines his own fucking agenda. I honestly believe his army is going to die freezing to death in the North because he was stupid enough to make the march in the first place.
So yea, Stannis is a weird character for me but he is very interesting as well. The Stannis in the show is just annoying.

I don't know about that. Stannis has many flaws, but he is far from a bad commander. He has an impressive track record, and is generally praised as a great strategist and battle commander.

I know that. From what the story tells of his exploits in Robert's Rebellion he was probably one of the most important heroes of that war.
Doesn't change the fact that in the War of the Five Kings he has gotten his ass kicked at every turn.

And basically the only reason he isn't king right now is "magic fire".
I'd say considering the circumstances he's done alright for himself.
|
Is it possible the show changed Stannis' character so much because they know more than we do about his eventual fate? What if he has some turning point that's been revealed to the show writers that has influenced how they write him now
|
I'm too lazy to track down the video, but I recall seeing an interview where the producers outright stated they thought Stannis was evil. Take it with a grain of salt though, my memory is fuzzy.
Otherwise, yes, Stannis has had it pretty rough in this war, though the circumstances are almost always against him. They were against him from the beginning against Renly, and the Shadow Baby helped him there. Same thing with Cortnay Penrose, the man who held Storm's End and refused to yield to Stannis.
After that, he lost a close battle due to the Tyrells and Lannisters arriving at the last second at the Battle of Blackwater, and he smashed the wildlings at the Wall. People had to join forces to defeat him, so I'd say he's done alright. I don't expect him to lose to Roose Bolton to be honest. Roose is a decent strategist and a good commander himself, and he's very cold and calculating, but I think Stannis is one level above. I fully expect him to retake Winterfell.
