We can go back to it later on and discover who he is, but instead, we see it every episode for 3-4 minutes. And I imagine the books had similar distressingly pointless examples of him getting tortured.
Its creepy.
My name is Reek, it rhymes with leek! The lack of faith in non book readers is... disturbing! Think they should know by now that everything happens for a reason, even if it takes Dany an entire book of sitting on her arse to get everything to fall back together, it eventually does!
Theon/Reek/Ramsay dynamic makes for very, very strong characters. So much is lost on non book readers
It almost led to my ban lol. Theon's story arc alongside House Bolton is perhaps my favorite part of GoT.

I'm not sure if I feel sorry for him, after all, he had two innocent kids brutally slaughtered just to save his ego and you could argue that he single-handledly spoiled Robb's war efforts (well, he is a very important factor in it, and it all could've turned out very differently) by betraying him. I feel strangely satisfied when I think about that and the situation he finds himself in. However, no one should suffer through something like this, but this is why I love SoIaF, the characters are so multi-faceted and I'm torn whether to love or hate them.

I completely agree with this. I do think Theon got punished enough now. It's already at the point where I would choose death in place of his fate. I hope he recovers somehow and does something good now. Although I wouldn't put it past GRRM to just burn him alive at the start of Winds of Winter.
Maybe I'm forgetting something - but the Edric Storm dilemma (Melissandre wants him dead, Stannis hesitates) is still being debated at the end of book 5. By taking Gendry away I suppose they will just house him in a castle somewhere and treat him like Edric. Otherwise the show feels like good fan service - you do get a lot of the scenes acted out. The Bran arc feels so shallow compared to the book. It feels more like a field trip than a boy meeting his destiny. And let's not get into Ygrett playing the housewife (she's much more independent and free willed in the book)
The thing that is really forgotten is that it's a war going on. There is a lot of dialog between characters (Freys / Robb and Tywin / Tyrell) but I don't get the gritty dirty feel of a ruined Harenhaal or bandits robbing and raping. If I don't force myself to imagine it, it feels like peace time in season 1. Venture out into the world and leave Kings Landing.
Bran's story arc is really long so I'm not sure what else they could do with him right now. He will get a lot more interesting in the show once he meets up with Coldhands. Speaking of which, where is he. Hasn't Sam killed an Other in the books by now. I thought the scene they showed with Sam and Gilly was right before he met Coldhands but they just cut away instead.
Don't mind about Gendry and Edric Storm thing. It makes sense to use a character they have already spent time introducing and developing on the show.
i hope Bran and Jon just die............shit they dont (atleast not till 6 years or so worth of seasons)
those scenes suck compared to all the other characters, we have motherfucking Tywin Lannister, Tyrion and Jaime, Arya, Stannis and Davos... even Dany scenes are good. The Boltons are not bad...
cant wait till we get rid of Robb..
hmm maybe things will get interesting when Jon defends the wall...
Bran should be quite a ways north now, he should almost be at the point where he runs into Jon in that little hovel on the lake. Well Summer runs into him...
I wonder whats going to happen with John and Ygritte now. Since shes told him she knows hes still a crow. Is his betrayal going to get her killed because of her loyalty? Will she run away with Jon back to Castle Black? Or will they split up and she will die at Castle Black like shes supposed to? I do remember that scene in the trailer where shes aiming a drawn bow at something. So maybe she sticks with the wildlings and just tells Jon to leave. We will see soon enough :D.

It makes it hard to stay away from the TV thread when people post idiotic things about GRM as if he's the one writing for the TV show -_-
This episode was great. Predictions for next episode:
1. Sam becomes Sam the Slayer 2. Tyrion and Sansa marriage 3. Arya gets abducted by the Hound 4. Dany marches on Yunkai
I am kinda curious how they are getting themselves out of the Loras-Cersei thing. This episode they really left no wiggle room regarding having a Willas squirreled away back hom in Highgarden. And while they left it somewhat ambiguous my interpretation of the scen was that the Queen of Thorns agreed to the marriage. Really strange.

I don't see why they should deviate from the books? Jon Snow runs away and she gets killed in the battle at Castle Black?

I think he's refering to when Brienne is almost getting killed and someone stabs a sword through the back of the head of the attacker and it comes out of his mouth.

Actually there were quite a few things in the books that didnt lead to much and seemed quite pointless in hindsight.

I don't like how they turned Tywin into a homophobe, there's nothing in the books to suggest that, or to suggest that homosexuality is viewed completely negatively in Westeros. I don't think it is viewed as an abomination at least. The subject doesn't come up too often in the books, but for the highborn at least it appears to be "we don't think too much of it but men will do whatever men want to do."

I'm still waiting for the Lord of Starfall to be more than a random squire. Was re-reading Book 3 and was like "Wait what? 'Dayne'?! As squire for Dondarian!?" and then he never got noted again.
To be honest, the original point is true. If a viewer feels they are seeing too much of Theon and have already gotten the point of sadism, then the purpose has honestly already been established for now, unless they're actually going to push forward Theon's "Reek" persona to this season? I thought they'd just torture him this season and we'd find out it was Bolton, but perhaps Theon will be Reek before the season ends.

Fairly certain it is not openly condoned in most places, otherwise Renly and Loras could be far more open about it (and in the book it is far more secret than in the show). I also wouldn't call it homophobe. He was using Loras' homosexuality as a political tool.
