The first season is pretty faithful, but I would still recommend starting from the first book. Not because they change the order of things, but there are characters or events that are skipped or heavily adapted to fit the TV show. If you really wanted to skip it, you can probally do it though. I wouldn't do the same for the second book.

The Ned dream parts from books are alone worth reading the book.

I think you'd be pretty confused if you tried to pick the books up in the middle, you'd be missing out on a lot of details and some minor characters. Although if you really can't wait to see what happens, you have to at least start with the beginning of book 3. Book 3 and 4 focus on different storylines but take place concurrently.
That was such a good episode. The Hound v Baric Dondarrion and Jon&Ygritte are probably two of my favorite scenes from the show so far. Also its funny to watch people's opinion of Jaime changing.

No, this is wrong. Book 4 and 5 take place concurrently.

Also why make Loras heir to Highgarden? Even if the other Tyrells arent introduced, it just makes no sense. So once he joins the Kingsguard, Highgarden has no heir. logical really.... I know it wont matter in the long run, but... why? Trying to marry him to Sansa makes sense, really, but this, not so much.
I'd prefer the other Tyrells existed as well, but I understand the limitations of budget and an ever growing cast and names to keep track of. Of course Willas hasn't actually been in person in the books so they could have described him being crippled and his role in ruling High Garden much like the books, but it would be another name for people to remember. In the show Loras has not joined the Kingsguard like he did in the books. He also isn't nearly as hung up on Renly as the fling showed, where part of the reason he joined the Kingsguard is because he thought he would never love another. Unfortunately they also removed all of Loras suspicion of Brienne being behind Renly's death, so we won't get that confrontation when she and Jaime return to Kings Landing.

Season 3 is so much better than season 2 so far... just like the books.

So what is the importance of Stannis daughter that they now decide to bring her in? I have a bad memory concerning the books. Has she done something relevant so far? Or do you guys think she will become important later on?
|
Shireen hasn't really done anything in the books, she's just there. The wildlings probably will distrust Stannis even more if it becomes common knowledge among them that his daughter suffered the Grayscale, Val telling Jon that the girl is basicly a living dead.

There is a theory that her fool (Patchface?) is actually the great other
More likely that Melisandre will want to use her blood for something.

well it seems she's gonna teach Onion knight to read and probably give him THE letter

Well she is likely replacing the Dragonstone Maester as the individual who teaches Davos how to read. Other than that, they have hinted in the show so far that Melisandre will be focused on Stannis sacrificing one of his own children rather than one of Robert's bastards (Edric Storm), even going so far as to having the stillborn sons in preserved jars (one of them being named Edric).
A likely scenario is Melisandre wants him to sacrifice Shireen to the Red God, and he manages to bargain her down to using one of the bottle babes. Or he contemplates doing it, but Davos sends Shireen away a la Edric Storm in the books.

The creepy song that was sung at the closing credits was Patchface's song and dance about birds living under the ocean and shadows coming out to dance. I wonder if we'll meet patchface in the show and I wonder how significant he is going to be down the line in the books.

I assumed, judging by the fact that Shireen was singing the songs, that patchface was cut.
