Check out any movie you can by japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda. (You want to remember this name, seriously.)
In particular - Still Walking: a beautiful and sensitive film in the tradition of Yasujiro Ozu. Every year a family gathers to commemorate the death of the eldest son, who died while rescuing another man from drowning. The surviving son has married a woman who already has a child. The father expected his children to follow in his footsteps and take up medicine. One son did, but not the living one. There are many things, I suppose, these people would like to say to each other, but this is not a "thanksgiving" movie. It is as true as it can be to the reality of unspoken tension and silent disagreements between family members, recognizing that confessions are extraordinary things, and that, very often, that which is left unsaid, remains unsaid.
Also, if you enjoy dark, quirky comedy, you must see these two movies by director Roy Andersson: Songs from the Second Floor and You, The Living.
There are plenty of clips on youtube for your enjoyment, but here's the opening of You, The Living.
Yesterday I re-watched the 1,5 hour movie finale of Avatar: The Last Airbender - Sozin's Comet, I love this series, it's the best storytelling animated TV series ever made, with some of the most genuine and engaging character development I've ever seen. It has action, humour, everything in one excellent package. If your an anime fan, you'll love it, even if your not, you will be after watching the 3 seasons, 23 hour long epic journey!
Never say Never has an astonishing 1.2/10 on imdb, lower than the bottom 100 which are ranged 1.5 - 2.6/10 barely with a few k votes compared to it's 33k votes, this has to be the worst movie of all time?
Both Boondock Saints movies!!! Being Irish I guess I'm a little biased here, but the first was an amazing movie and the second was ok. Definitely looking forward to the 3rd!!!
Recommended to me by a girl and I thought it was going to be a typical chick-flick but I was proven wrong. Surprisingly good. Also Anna Hathaway is love.
Female comedians usually aren't too funny, but I found this rather funny. Maybe it was my after match bong hit... Movies I've watched because of this thread: Sunshine - absolutely amazing movie, I've been craving more sci fi movies like this but haven't been able to find any quite as well done Buried - quite similar to 127 hours in some ways I though was interesting but not as good as 127 hours Funny Games - terrible movie but if you're really bored it'll pass the time The Machinist - damn christian bale is a damn good actor. really well done but predictable Survive Style 5+ - lolwtfbbq shit is deep man. Pandorum - so good sooo good The Cove - never knew such a cove existed ;_; very informative The American Astronaut - err not my type of movie but was kinda funny Pathology - very B grade movie that was enjoyable Let the Right One In - was good but i thought they could have done so much more. seemed like vampire story and fairy tale crossed together

+2 cool points if you have even heard of it +10 if you have seen it.
Such an awesome mashup of genres...you'll go from laughing to disturbed in mere seconds.

dude... the 2nd was NOT ok...
Yeah definitely don't agree with all the hype regarding part two. I thought it was horrible as well.
If you like war movies, this is a must see. There is also an interesting story of why this movie never got the release it deserved (basically the studio changed hands and the new brass didn't know what to do with it so they just released it in a few theatres.)
The man from earth This one is a true hidden gem. I had never heard of it before and stumbled upon it rather by accident but boy was i impressed. This movie is fiction but still do not expect any great special effects or the like, this is one of those movies that neither has nor needs them. This is one of those movies that does not need a fancy makeup of effects but rather just tells a story. A well thought out story given a lot of depth by the characters (which are very well played even though a lot of the actors are not overly well known), and looks with a wink at todays society without beeing pompous or moraly overloaded. A movie that leaves you behind with some thoughts and a grin on your face when you think about it, and is definitely worth the 2 hours you spend watching it, unlike so many others.
That movie has been mentioned several times in this thread, but is always worth a watch.
If you don't mind watching older movies then watch "Rashomon", which may not be a hidden gem, but it is one of the most defining movies.
Edit: I also have to quote this, since it's been mentioned only one time in this thread which is a shame in itself.
This is an A+ film that people don't seem to know about. It was directed by Sergio Leone, who directed six films, including firstly the acclaimed Dollars Trilogy of Westerns with Clint Eastwood and secondly a loose trilogy of films about America (including two more mature westerns, Once Upon A Time in the West and Duck, You Sucker aka A Fistful of Dynamite aka Once Upon A Time... the Revolution).
Once Upon A Time in America was Sergio Leone's magnum opus. He had some other films planned, but he died before he could realize any of them. It's a gangster film, but it's also a powerful film about life. Leone turned down an offer to direct The Godfather because he wanted to make his gangster film, but someone else had the rights to the novel by Harry Grey which the script was loosely based on. It was released in 1984, but in a version heavily abridged and edited by the studio so that the film would be commercially viable. However, this cut was garbage, and responsible for the film's failure in theaters.
It's about 3 hours and 45 minutes with an intermission. If you get the 2 disk set, the intermission will be buried somewhere in the second disk (it's not a 50/50 intermission). I highly recommend watching it in one serious, dedicated sitting, though. You have to pay attention to this movie.
Also regarding the heavy cut. It was only released in the US that way, which made Leone so sad and angry that he just didn't want to make movies anymore, because for him it felt like someone jsut destroyed his masterpiece. In Europe the movie was released in full length, which is 230 minutes long. He wasn't also that angry, because of the heavy cutting, but because they also changed the chronology of the movie.
The movie is just a masterpiece and it was the last thing done by the perfect duo, namly Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone.
I don't remember which thread this was posted on, but I wanted to bump this because I just finished watching it and it was far better than what I expected. This is a beautiful movie, a bit slow but it's really a good watch.
Is it too much trouble to write a movie title along with the poster? I don't demand IMDB links or anything like that, just the title. All this [image loading] stuff when images go down (some things don't last forever on the Internet you know) is extremely annoying. Especially when you read a description/thoughts after the movie and decide it could be something nice you'd like to see... Unfortunately you can't because there's NO MOVIE TITLE to be found anywhere in the post.
Start including movie titles in your posts please.
I am not gonna try to write a lot about this one, but it certainly is a movie you should watch if you like gang stuff. The protagonists are pretty young and it is more a movie about friendship, betrayal, revenge and all that cool themes you'd like to see in such a movie. It's just the Taiwanese setting that makes this movie special and that the plot is in the 80s.
I thought it was a cool movie with some pretty decent acting.
Bronson, a weird film, made all the weirder because it's based on a true story. I found it quite enjoyable, altho I do reckon you have to be in the mood a bit. Big fan of the actor tho, he also appears in Rock-n-Rollah and Inception.
